On the VR note. The brain in a vat analogy was around at the time of MP's writing. I think it works fairly well as an analog to VR. Thanks again for your videos! :)

Did you presuppose that I would click like? Because I have.

Presupposed as an a priori judgement, no less.

That's almost poetic ....... about language being a means of translating the world and giving it meaning.
But what exactly is this language? Because in the way M-P is using it, it seems to me he is saying language uses our ability to think and analyse to provide a meaning (a meaning for us ...... ie humans) but would there not have been a way of understanding the world before we started thinking in symbols. That is, for example, animals (and young children) must interpret the world through pure perception which is their meaning but maybe not meaning in the way adult humans mean.
I may not be getting my meaning across very well here.

Hmm, interesting to think about. I agree that MP is saying we need language for meaning. To your comment: personally, I am reluctant to attribute a capacity for ‘meaning’ (in any sense of that word) to animals and young children. Without language, I’m not sure you can organise your thoughts enough to grasp the world in a way that would allow you to truly impute meaning to things in it.
MP talks about this in _PhP_ when he discusses the _welt_ and the _umwelt,_ the former being the human ‘world’ (an impersonal, reflected, understanding of reality we achieve after performing Husserl’s (or MP’s version of Husserl’s) suspension), the latter, the personal ‘milieu’ both we and animals are immersed in. Things like ‘meaning,’ ‘understanding,’ and ‘interpretation’ emerge only once an organism is able to ‘distance’ itself from the _umwelt._

@@absurdbeing2219 Thanks for the clarification of how M-P uses meaning and understanding. Not having read PhP 🤫, I'm not familiar with welt and umwelt.
I think I selected a poor example when trying to make my point. I agree with you that we shouldn't jump to conclusions about animals and young children in the way I did.
It might have used works of art like abstract painting or a piece of music as these can have deep meaning for the artist and observer/listener. But this is also a poor example as I'm not then distancing myself from the umwelt and just enjoying wallowing in it!
What a fascinating topic though! Thanks.

@@myla6135 No worries. Just to be clear, I wasn't suggesting you were wrong - just expressing my own thoughts on the subject. It's good to toss ideas around when thinking about this stuff!

@@absurdbeing2219 Awww, that was clear. As someone who knows only so much, it's easy for me to miss the meaning of what is being put forward and to not understand the point being made. (!)
Besides I like your responses as they always make me have another think for which I'm most grateful.
