  • This BYOT DIY project details how to remove sheet vinyl flooring using a Bosch oscillating multi tool. This is a step by step tutorial on removing sheet vinyl. The MultiTool is extremely useful and can make any job easier. Bosch oscillating multi tool is my favorite tool of all time. Bring Your Own Tools (BYOTools #27).

    Holy crap man, you saved me so much! Having someone install new tile, but they needed to rip up the linoleum to get a good bond with the subfloor. They gave us a fixed bid for the install but (understandably) would charge us $125/hr to do the demo, and not sure how long it would it would take. I took a stab at doing it myself, and it took for freaking ever using a scraper, a hammer and crowbar and finally a pneumatic scraper. When I saw this, I ran out and bought a oscillating tool (I'd always wanted one now I had an excuse to buy one), bought a Diablo scraper (what Home Depot had) and not only did it go several times faster, but the scraper damn near lasted the entire kitchen floor. I eventually got a new scraper just to go a bit faster, but it worked like an absolute charm. I'm sure you saved me at least $1k. For that price I'm going on a well needed vacation after this kitchen is done!

    This video is a life saver, I was faced with this problem, the lino is glued to within an inch of its life, I was trying to do it with a scraper, now I will get one of these, funny thing to I am also putting down grey hexagonal tiles, they look really good, thankyou for this video.

    As an electrician that does strictly remodels this is an absolute essential tool. th-cam.com/users/postUgkx0vyBwjtx9GGOuiqUVT2sRoYqmDoNT_RI Being able to precision cut any material with a light weight tool is priceless.I upgraded to this Dewalt 20v from a competitor's 12v. The Dewalt 20v is just as light as the competitor's 12v. I am extremely pleased with the overall performance and battery life of this tool. As far as oscillators go, they just aren't very ergonomic tools. The dewalt oscillators have an offset handle that do make them somewhat more ergonomic than the competitors' oscillators.

    thank you. I tried with a heat gun on my bathroom where someone had been a bit heavy handed with the glue and did about a square foot in half an hour, realised I needed a different approach.
    My house was floorboards, then someone had installed a hardboard layer over the boards followed by glued down lino. The multitool did make a bit of a mess of the hardboard (though I could have been more careful I needed to get to the pipes under the boards anyway so it was being replaced). joys of owning a 70 year old property!

    Nice video. I had a floor scraping job that destroyed two types of manual scrapers and also destroyed a new scraper blade in my demo saw. The job entailed removing old glued down vinyl tile on a concrete floor after having already removed a layer of glued down carpet tile. I needed a tool that was narrow and heavy. My wrist are to old to handle pushing a scraper. I took a $6.00 masons chisel cut the head off ground a 30 sharp edge on it and stuck it inside the end of a 5' section of 1" heavy duty metal pipe. I then hammered the end of the pipe flat against the shoulders of the chisel. This tool made short work of the job
    and was very easy on my wrist because it was heavy enough to let the tool do the work.

    When I tried to use a multi tool to remove hardened glue under vinyl all it did was burn the glue! Not sure how long that vinyl has been down but the stuff I’m removing is now 29 years old. Massive amount of work!

    • @JoeCarlinCA
      @JoeCarlinCA 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ours is original to the house, 85 years! I feel ya bud! Perhaps it's a different adhesive because the friction helped melt the glue (made sure to ventilate the area!) and it made much faster work out of it. Not fast, but DEFINITELY a few multiples fastER.

      In case anyone else is reading on this. You dont have to buy an expensive oscillating tool for this. Harbor freight sells a low spec (which still is more than enought the above) for like 30$

  • @legoclonekid
    @legoclonekid 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Just for the record, Harbor Freight carries these tools and the bits for far less than other name brands. However, as with most things from HFT, you are substituting the cost for some of the quality. Great for the part time DIYers though!

    Removing old lino but oscillating tool doesn’t do it alone. Need to add heat to remove all that extra glue. Still much easier than just a scrapper, couldn’t budge the stuff

    • @JoeCarlinCA

      In my experience, the scraper tool adds heat from friction and was enough to turn it to glue. Had to make sure to ventilate the place though!

    I currently have a dilema. I have very old linoleum under the carpet I ripped out of our hallway that I plan to put lvp flooring into. I started to remove a little piece of the linoleum by the cold air return for furnace and a little piece by a bedroom door to peek at the subfloor. Subfloor looks good from what I peeked at and what I see from underneath in the basement. I made a call to a friend who is a carpenter and he was concerned about asbestos in the 1960 installed linoleum. I patched in some linoleum I found into where I checked the subfloor. I am now leaning towards leaving the old linoleum and putting underlayment and flooring over it. My friend is quite adement about the asbestos issue. I have a Makita oscillating tool with the sharp smooth blade but I don't know.

    • @BYOTools
      @BYOTools  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your right to be concerned about asbestos and should take the proper persuasions like having a good ventilator mask and eye protection. However, in my opinion if you have those items and your not removing 1960 Linoleum every week then I wouldn't be too concerned. Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks for subscribing as well.

      @@BYOToolsYeah I was really shocked at how little dust it created. We had just installed brand new cabinets and I was totally worried about getting them dusty and grimy, but even working close to them it created very little dust. The much bigger problem is smoke from heating up the adhesive, so make sure the area is well ventilated anyways!
