It is a Mast Year but are those beech seeds you have collected viable?

tyvk 4 this video; Last year was the first time that I ever tried beech nuts. Really loved them.
This year I gathered a bunch of them, and when I tried to sample them, it was just Fibre in my mouth. Just husks.
And I tested several of them and got the same result.
I really wanted to know why, and now I know.
Fibre itself isn’t actually wonderful to taste, so I think I’ll float them like you did to find out what actually has food in them, and toss the rest of the compost bin.
And I think I would like to try to grow a few beech trees myself.
    Thank you so much! :-)

Thank you. I just picked up abunch of breech tree seeds from a healthy tree here in the US and I am hoping to manage to grow a few. Here in Eastern US there is a beech leaf disease that is expected to kill all the neech trees.

Keep picking nuts over the course of a few weeks for best results...in my experience the later seeds are more likely to be viable...I collect all the way till there are no more to be had, mostly off the trees but also from the ground. Great to hear you are trying to help the beech. Here in English it is ash that are all dying. Best wishes from England!

I'm in Toronto Canada and I haven't found 1 viable seed from 4 trees. It's been a coolish damp year.

I found that too so far this year, I am in upstate NY. Beech is found mixed in forests with hickories, Linden, maple, and oak so I have collected viable hickory nuts and collected some good acorns. At least that harvesting trip wasn't a waste with those.

@@Skitdora2010 in 4 years I've found 1 white oak acorn. This year it's raining the whites!! Shag bark, same thing. Good luck 🤞

Same in England...a few beech nuts but all hollow. It will be two or three years before another mast year. Plenty of acorns, though.

sorry to be thick here but I know absolutely nothing about this, I have collected lots of fallen nuts most of which are still green, should I open them to extract the nut or leave them a while to open naturally?

    • @howardbell281
      @howardbell281  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Leave them to open naturally. If the nuts are plump they may be viable...more often than not they are hollow. It was a mast year last year so I expect viable beech seeds may be hard to find...keep looking till at least the end of September...the ones that stay on the tree longer are often better. Best of luck

Why do trees produce non-viable seeds?

    • @Robert_McGarry_Poems

Numbers. Pollen moves, the seeds don't. Produce more than you want, get what the wind gives you...
