    Ive been training almost 5 years, blue belt for three. My last school did belt testing and I was disappointed when I didn’t pass. Coach told me he could give me a purple belt and noone would question it anywhere I went, but he wasn’t sure I was the purple belt version of myself yet. He saw something I did not and I trusted in him … well, then I moved with work, started at a new school, got injured, don’t really feel connected to this new school yet, and just feel exactly like you said in the video - like im kind of in a rut, can’t see the forest through the trees. This video is exactly what I needed. Thank you for this wisdom.

    I finally reached a point where I'm not caring as much about achieving Purple. My new gym doesn't award stripes after Blue belt and it's helped dial in why I'm here; to improve. Not wondering if I'll be getting the next stripe has cleared the fog and allowed me to focus on my game... not fixated on the next belt, but focus on fixing holes and learning from failures and just becoming a better practitioner. The next thing I know I'm getting tapped less, achieving new levels of calm, and evolving. I'll get Purple when my Professor thinks I'm there, and will be awesome, but not fixating on a Purple piece of cloth is triggering unexpected growth. Rad
    Thanks for the wisdom, Professor. 🤘

    Hey friends. I see a lot of y’all who are blue belts working towards your purple. I just got promoted 2 weeks ago to purple, I’m telling ya’ll, this video is super super accurate to what to think about with purple. But guys, hear me out, don’t over think what your requirements are, remember we get better through consistency. I was a blue belt for 1.5 years but those last 3 months I trained the most consistent I’ve trained in a sec, and next thing you know I got promoted. Sometimes you’re not gonna feel like you’re ready. Don’t worry about that, just keep showing up guys. The journey is what’ll matter the most. As long as you guys show up, promotion will happen regardless of how long that is. Don’t stop going guys. Big love. I hope I see someone you one day on the mats flexing your belts (: Oss

    I’m 47 and I’m a new purple. It’s the most intimidating part of my journey so far. There are upper blues that are coming with mad purpose for you. There are often only two thoughts to training. Some professors want you to win every roll. Some professors want you trying new things… without tapping. There are 3 stripe white belts that are, young and strong, and might catch a purple if the purple is trying new things.
    I’d rather play with new ideas and tap to lower belts… but that is a huge sin to most professors. Purple is about taking more chances. Win or lose.

      @valiantsoul94 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      1stripe white belt ,at any time rolling with a purple you can feel when their showing you where you made huge opening, or let you work against their hard defense and if you can see the small window you can’t fit in yet, they’ll allow you work it in if you attempt it, thank you

      My buddy is a black belt. I know he taps to lower belts because I've seen him tap to a white belt before. I'm sure he's doing two things. 1) He's experimenting with a new technique or strategy. 2) He's allowing the lower belts to sharpen their tools as well. I'm certain he's doing these because when he was a brown belt he was also the mat enforcer. It'd be highly unlikely a white belt is going to legit catch him. Anyways, I think experimenting with different ideas is good because it widens your knowledge base and also keeps the journey exciting.

    I just received my purple today. After two and a half years at blue. I was honored by having mine awarded in the presence of Gustavo Pieres. What is being said here is very true. My difficulty was my mindset that I needed to know every defense for every possible attack and then be able to counter it. I had a paradigm shift about six months ago where I went from technique seeking to the flow seeking, the momentum shifts…It changed my approach a good bit. The little changes and shifts started to come easier and stick. Love the message that this video gives. 🙏🏼🙏🏼

    This was a really inspiring pep talk. I’m mid way through my blue belt and feel like I’ve finally turned a corner. My game is sharp, and I can hand out a fair amount of business. But I feel like my next step up is flowing better between attacks. I have mastery of pressure on top, but I am still rough on my back. But I have the humility to keep trying new things even though it may not end well. Thank you for validating my approach. I feel very positive about where things are headed now.

    Thank you. Perhaps it’s your eloquent words, graceful delivery, and/or the subtle background track, but this brought a calm to my otherwise stormy and often frustrated blue belt mind.
    It has been over an 8 year journey made more difficult and treacherous by injuries and life’s obstacles that are both in and out of my control. I’ve become hyper-aware of my lack of progress while watching others rise 2 and 3 belts. This sport gives and takes so much of us. While I long to accelerate and rush the rise to an expert level, I can’t help but reflecting on how much I enjoy teaching young blues and whites the subtle intricacies that will make them better.

I've been training since 2017, minus a year and a half off the mats during covid and other setbacks. My advice is to stop thinking about being promoted, just focus on getting better, want to get better, improve and improve more. Improving a little everyday makes a huge difference over time. Blue belt here as well. I've found that changing my perspective goes a long way.
      For example I'm in my 40's. I have kids. I have a house. I have a career. Due to scheduling conflicts, I can't train more than twice per week (rarely I can train 3 times per week). I've seen people start after me and surpass me in rank and skill simply because they have the ability to train more frequently than me.
      Then I remember why I train BJJ: break a sweat, get a stretch, and make friends. As long as I've achieved those, I'm quite satisfied. Once I regain my perspective, I find myself quite happy to keep training even if I don't advance as fast as my classmates.

    "What is a BJJ Purple Belt?"
    Answer: It is a piece of cotton cloth (some have polyester or other materials) that has been dyed purple. They come in different sizes (example A1, A2, A3, etc.) but the belt is meant to be tied around your waist while doing pajama wrestling.
    Obviously I am joking (but somewhat serious). I have been training for 5+ years and last month I was awarded a BJJ purple belt on the podium, it is a moment I will never forget.

    I am 46 and I have been a blue belt for three years. I have never worried about belts or promotion, or stripes, I have always just tried to perform at a higher level. The issue that I find myself in now is that it's expected that I will make that push to purple; and I would love to say that's the path I'm on. The unfortunate truth, for me, is that I see all these opportunities. I can watch a roll and see the sweeps and transitions, as well as multiple submissions, and all kinds of things; the issue is getting my body to do what I know it needs to do when I am in those situations. As an older, bigger guy, I accepted awhile back , that there would be limitations on what I could physically do compared to the younger smaller people. I am at the point, after three years, that I don't see that "shift" coming anytime soon. I love jiu jitsu and I have no intention of quitting or giving up, but it is a reality that some people may never reach that "fundamental shift" in mentality and performance that allows them to turn that corner into the honed, "elite" belts. I think that what is important for people that are in this position, is that you remember that your game may not be like the game that you see others that are your rank in your gym playing. I think that sometimes we use someone as a basis for comparison as where we think we ought to be, or the skill set that we should be implementing based on some arbitrary person that we somewhat model in our gym. As a 46 year old 300 lb blue belt, the reality is that I am not going to be inverting, using lightning speed transitions, and be an extremely dynamic grappler. Set your own goals for yourself and make them smaller goals like retaining your guard throughout an entire roll, or integrate a technique you've been having difficulty getting while drilling, into a roll. No matter what happens on your BJJ journey, if you can continue to make milestones of your own, the belts will become less of a focus and I feel like you will enjoy the entire journey. Just my two cents, cheers to you all.

    I know I have at least 2 or 3 years to go from blue to purple. When I started BJJ training, with very few exceptions, any purple belt I rolled or drilled with felt like a wizard, who could effortlessly do anything he wanted, and stop me from doing anything he didn't want me to do.
    At our school blue belts are described as advanced beginners, purple belts are considered the beginning of becoming advanced, and are expected to be "dangerous". A purple belt should be able to challenge a black belt and "keep them on their toes". My perception is that the difference between a new blue belt and a new purple belt is greater than the difference between a new purple belt and a new black belt.

    This is pretty much what my coach wanted from me for my blue belt, though i wouldnt expect that Roy would bestow a purple belt on me.
    Its probably more that youre referring to the ideas that you want to see fully internalised, whereas my coach just wants me to be able to demonstrate that i am beginning the process of internalising these ideas.
    Right as i was thinking this in those words the words "internalise" was used.
    Edit: I just realised that the brown and black belt ones are already up. Just didn't see it earlier, bc of how many vids this fella is pumping out.

    I was a white belt for three years and a few months. I’ve been a blue belt for two and a half years. I train in both GI and NoGi. I’m competent at both. I have a solid defense and I can put submission techniques together, just like Rick mentioned. Also, I’m helpful to the newer students bringing them along so we can all grow together. My instructors know this, they’ve seen it. However, I really don’t know what goes through their mind. There’s a stripe system, but some times they use it, other times they don’t. It’s the inconsistency that bothers me. I don’t really have a clue when that purple belt is coming. Since I like NoGi so much, ultimately I don’t care. In NoGi everyone mostly wears a black rash-guard and shorts. All anyone cares about is your knowledge and ability.

      Here’s a story for you:
      When I got my very first stripe Instill remember the day. I kept training for months on end and felt like I was never going to advance. Even saw other people that I started with get their stripes, and mean while I was tapping them out.
      Right before class I was frustrated as I’m putting in my Gi and kept telling myself “I don’t want to go today, this is bullshit, etc.” However, I kept getting ready and still showed up to class and needless to say, it was that day, the day I was most frustrated and almost getting ready to quit all together, was the day I got my first stripe.
      That day taught me a lesson, and a lesson that in grateful that I learned early on in my journey.
      We all have things we need to learn and all of our journeys will be different. But as long as you continuously show up even on the days you don’t want to go, do what you have to do, and never quit, you’ll always get to the place you need to be.
      I’m confident based on what you’re saying that you are literally at the cusp of purple belt, just enjoy the journey and be patient. It’s when we’re most frustrated and confused about a situation that we are almost at the point of surpassing it.
      Stay strong, stay disciplined. It’ll pay off on the end brother 🙏

    IMO the reason why the question comes up ALL THE TIME ... Is in Judo for example (from what I understand), there are x Number of techniques (lets say 30? 40? whatever, throws, pins, escapes, transitions , submission) and Black Belt should be 5-6 years as an example (a Good Karate school would also be 5+ years) because Black Belt is Considered the Beginner Belt, one has just learned X number of techniques (each belt has very specific techniques where in Jujitsu often we are all leaning the same techniques regardless of rank, day one anaconda choke new guy is learning anaconda choke...) or often many new people so we are doing arm bar, but if a higher belt has the armbar locked in maybe the new people should be doing arm bar while the higher belts are doing Barotoplatta ............ It honestly seems there's a gap in the belt system. People are technically proficient but despite yrs of experience they don't know how to teach/dial things back at the purple belt level. Another white belt and I were struggling with the the S mount to arm bar move. A 50 yr old 15 yr 250 lb purple belt "demonstrated" it by saying "this is going to be uncomfortable for him (i.e. me) then at competition speed smashed my ribs on both sides. He had no awareness on his end that he should have dialed it way down, told me to brace my core and at least be ready for what was coming. It was my 1st time being exposed to the fkin move. I wish I had a mechanism to continue training. I know the learning curve is for me very steep but there's no viable pathway when the senior folks have so little awareness.

    • @TheArtofSkill

      The 9 belt colors in the IBJJF system are just sub-divisions of the adult white belt. In other words, a one stripe white belt is the equivalent of advancing through the 3 grey belts. If you get to the last kid belt (green belt with black stripe), that's the equivalent of a blue belt when you turn 16.

    Can people stay blue belt forever (if they willing to stay for certain reason), even they reach to higher level?

    • @cjangelo7517
      @cjangelo7517 ปีที่แล้ว

      If they are reaching that level then that means they are training regularly enough to just be promoted. The only thing that keeps people at blue is lack of mat time, which has to be ALOT of. Most of my friends that have been training longer than me and are still blue are still blue because they don’t train enough or consistently enough to improve to the point of moving up in belt. Belt promotion regardless of belt color is marker of a type of evolution in your jiu jitsu, and if you don’t train consistently enough that evolution will take much longer to occur. So if you are getting better, it’s because your training consistently, consistency manifests your evolution as a jiu jitsu player, that evolution is recognized thru a belt promotion. I just got promoted to purple 2 weeks ago, and I can tell you I don’t think I got better but I was training so fucking often (im 26 also went thru a break up so I went ape shit in training) to where I was evolving myself to be more fluid, think ahead more, be more consistent in being OUT of bad positions

    • @cjangelo7517
      @cjangelo7517 ปีที่แล้ว

      Short answer: only time you stay at one belt is if you’re not training. You can not be good enough to be compared to purple, brown, or black belts if you’re not on the mats and anyone whose trained long enough and is worth their salt will make sure that that person is promoted appropriately

    most belt promotion in bjj is about time served at the club, not skill, more of a conveyor belt of belt promotion. many purple belts are no better than blue belts in skill, maybe just a little more aggressive.
    bjj is unfortunately a bit of a cult, a blue belt could be better than most purple belts but never get to purple if they do not attend regularly or are not part of the social hierarchy. there is certainly no magical shift from blue to purple, or purple to brown, or brown to black.
    even worse are the purple or higher belts who lack stand up and striking skills as they would fail embarassingly in a real self defense situation where dropping to the ground and automatically going to grab a lapel would probably result in a swift kick to their face.
    maybe stop the silly obsession with belts and focus on actual skill or atleast develop a belt promotion system that takes the promotions out of the hands of club instructors who get to wield excessive control over their students, perhaps more of a judo style regional method.
