growing up in Otara was stressful and unsettling at times. As a Indian dairy shop owner for my parents and it was traumatizing for us as kids to witness, I remember the fights and my dad running around Otara with a sword at night trying to find thieves and trouble makers that used to hassle us at our shop but the love was there also sirley. late Jona lamnu was a regular customer and he always used to get heaps of big ben pies lol, he used live with his aunty I think, my dad eventually became friends with some of the local gang members towards the end of our days there with time some of those thieves and trouble makers actually became our friends and would also protect our shop in many ways. I'm glad I grew up in Otara, never thought id say that but now I'm older and I see the positive more then the negative.
I moved to Otara from Southland in 1989. A white kid from small town NZ to South Auckland. Ashley Ave. Also went to Hillary and then later Otahuhu college.
Great doc. I was born a year prior to this doc being made & was raised out West.. but I can still remember Otara looking that way, as a young kid in the 90’s. I always enjoyed the drives out to Otara, when visiting family.
This was the first place i went to in Auckland. I was in my late 20s. And when we parked up in town i started crying because i thought i was lost and was scared 😅
29 Gilbert Rd. My family home in South Auckland. All the cousins I remember spend school holidays there and almost every weekend. I love all my cousins aunties uncles we as a bloodline I must admit thinking about it were organized and made it fun for us kids. We loved school academically our parents parenting skills were their behavior child-like ❤❤❤
I was from huntly, but I got removed from my sister's cause I was in an out of the boys homes. So got sent to live with my other sister in wynmonley otara in the 80s. Went to otahuhu college, crossed the pipe to school an home. Ended up sniffing glue and becoming a ACSK. Ended up in kohitere boys home after that. Memories of my childhood
70s 80s Dawson Road kid. Yogi's and Roxy's video arcade, played basket ball and table tennis at the gym next to the church on the corner of Bairds and Preston road in Flatbush. There was also a trampoline there. Was part of the original crew at the Korkiri Te Rahuitanga in the agriculture gardens on Alexandra Cres, Paul was my super on our side and Wattie was the super for the other gardens across from ours. A friend of mine's old man used to hold movie nights at the Flatbush school hall, he owned a reel to reel movie projector and had a mean movie collection, I remember watching the uncut version of the Warriors (known today as the TV version) Friday the 13th and Cujo. Flatbush takeaways made the best paua and beef patty fritters, there was a pedestrian tunnel from Flatbush road to Tui road Papatoe that I'd use to go to the Skateboard park, Starlight cinema had the meanest movie marathons, I watched the movie Cat People for the first time there. East Tamaki best Chinese food at Tung Hai's, my mum used to work there and me and my cousin used to pick her up after work, Otara Saturday markets were the best, cuzzies from Pukekohe sold their potatoes there, Seone at OMAC, Otara library and the record shop next to it. Worked at Bandag Industries on Neales road in the mid to late 80's, the Black Power pad use to be around the corner from my job and me and a couple of my work mates sometimes went to their club room for a nice cold beer after a hard weeks work, no drink and drive though because taxis back then were cheap like 2-3 dollars home from there unless we had a sober driver then we'd go to the White Horse tavern Pakuranga or back to the Flying Jug aka East Tamaki tavern. We kids back then were always outdoors doing kid stuff, climbing trees, playing bullrush, chillin' at the local skateboard park watching the big kids do some wild tricks.
💯💞 Differently Home Franklin rd, lappington, gray cres, gilbert, Ashton, edward ave, norla, high drome, e.t, otara rd, Wymondley, bairds rd, Went to hillary at this time, know mostly all people's in this video, & yes Mr leilua was my teacher in P.E,💪💞💯 befor me was my 2 sisters, brother & many more of my cousins too
Otara mid-late 60s early 70s has dark histories that migrated through the brainwash of urban Māori that whakapapa back to where ever their kainga originated, the hidden agenda of Nacissim that folliwed Māori family because of the Whenua deprogrammed from generations.
This was filmed around '98. Good watch though. Shops at Otara Centre back then had great variety. Now it's all asian shops with the odd subway in a dark little corner 😭
Yeap, use to look after him along side his cousins carol, cookie✝️, isac, when we was kids, ❤ hang out in the back entrance of bairds intermediate..hallway on Gilbert rd, near his papakainga,...went to church to

It was good to see Otara again. I haven't been back for almost 30 years. Moved to Australia for a better way of living.
Is there a different ways of living in Australia than New Zealand? Just asking that's all. 😮😊
