  • When COVID-19 outbreaks closed meat processing plants across the US, a meat shortage and unprecedented meat prices soon followed. With no plants taking animals, some farmers were forced to euthanize their herds. But what exactly caused this break in the supply chain and could the industry have avoided it? Business Insider visits a farm in Minnesota facing this devastating reality and another in California that was able to avoid it altogether.

      It's efficiency and automation. 280 Lbs is the optimal weight for the least amount of feed and the most amount of meat, thus, the slaughterhouse is designed for this specific weight. With machines hyperspecialized and calibrated for this exact weight. Something larger would break the machines.
      It really, really is a 1st world problem.

    For those who are familiar with the metric system:
    On screen at 1:09: "Beef tenderloin price: US: $37.48 per kg // Switzerland: $63.93 per kg"
    At 2:41: "All the pigs Mike or any farmer sends to a plant have to weigh about 125 kg."
    At 2:46: "If it gets above 135 or 150 kg, the plants are just not configured to take animals of that size."
    At 3:09: "This diet should slow him down to about half a kilo a day and we're usually; they're gaining approximately one kilo a day at this stage."
    At 3:17: "But even on a diet they were growing beyond the 135-kilo-mark by the day. It was a no-win scenario."
    At 5:30: "Belcampo is home to 3,000 grass-fed organic cattle. They have 12,000 hectares to roam and live seven to ten times longer than conventional cattle."

      They actually kill most pigs by gassing them in chambers anyway. Its mandatory in places where humane kill laws exist even though there's nothing humane about it. The workers drag and kick them to move them around (how do you think workers get animals they've tortured their whole lives to move from point a to point b when they know point b ends in death) They're thrown into cramped chambers and then lowered into the ground while they scream and try and climb on top of eachother in a desperate attempt to breathe.

    how about giving it away to communities or families who wants to raise them?

    • @recolinotyu
      @recolinotyu 4 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      Pretty sure the communities and families don't have the extra space to take not even 5% of that total. It's an absurd ammount of pigs. And the logistics of that would be very costly as well.
      Even in a small family ranch they tend to be efficient with their space usage, wich means they don't have the space for keeping extra pigs out of nowhere
      They probably allowed people who actually have the means of picking up and transporting pigs by themselves to come take some, but that only makes a dent on the total.

    • @AlyssaTaylor9
      @AlyssaTaylor9 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Do you have extra space and resources for a 300 lb animal, especially during a pandemic?
      There probably are some that were placed elsewhere, but if they don't have the logistical capacity to operate the plants, they definitely dont have the capacity to place millions of animals.

    Working with a large DYI retailer I can see disruption in the supply chain as it rolls from one product to another. Not only is there production disruption, there is a transportation and delivery schedule disruption.
    Most consumers don't see, or understand how big the disruption is. Most are so self entitled and absorbed they will literally complain about others out buying the things they think they need and do os while they are buying them. They will say stuff like why are they out, don't they know there is a shelter at home order, or why they think that thing they are buying is essential as they buy something that will neither feed, shelter, or protect them.
    Its that american attitude of rules don't apply to me just my neighbor that has our infection and new hospitalization rates still climbing and the EU approaching zero banning american flights from entry.
    I have grown saddened at how myopic and self centered so many of us are and I hope they are the ones who suffer alone in death and not the rest of us working to keep them alive and able to buy essentials for life and the crap they don't need, or really even want, yet feel its ok to complain if we don't have it. Its sad, its pathetic, and its the reason we pray you stop adding more of you genetic material to the gene pool.

    Speaking as a trucker that delivers to the distribution centers. Such as Walmart, Kroger, Food Lion and the rest. Before the stopped production. I would be taking a full load of beef to a Walmart or another one. Where we drop loaded trailers and pick up an empty one. What was happening was I would get there with a loaded trailer. Drop it. Then have to wait for their local driver to bring a empty trailer back from the landfill. They were not selling enough meat, so their distribution centers were not shipping it to the stores. So every full trailer they got of fresh beef, chicken or pork. They would take one to the dump. It wasn't spoiled meat, nothing wrong with it. They just didn't have any more room to store it. So, throw it away. Of a trailer full. Is 42,000 pounds of meat. Yeah, they threw it away, all over the country they were and are doing this daily.

    For me Abbie, (and thanks for asking anyway), when there is no chicken or other meat there that I would buy at times, I would go without, so my opinion may not really matter. I like your question though! I am a person that enjoys eating meat and DO, as eating meat has become a staple and the norm in our society. Processed and deli meats are easy to buy / prepare and consume. Chicken meat is EVERYWHERE.
    I'm a lay person; a consumer. I buy chicken and chicken products ( we can't really avoid it ). It's on all our grocery shelves, in one way or another. But Abbie, when I'm at a grocery store, I'm not looking at such things like that. I'm looking at what I need more than what I want, and wonder if I have enough freezer space to store it.
    Working in retail, I'm guessing many people buy day to day, or week to week. I'm a single guy and have only one frig/freezer, so I look at other ways of keeping foods for longer periods of time.

    Back in the 80s Australia had a wool glut, the world had turned to synthetics, and the high-quality wool Australia roduced was not wanted. Attempts to control the price had created the wool stockpile, and the government solution to the problem was brutal. The flock reduction scheme paid $6 to kill a sheep...
    I was on a family farm. My older brothers talk about it as the day they shot all the sheep, and how they went through every gun on the farm till they all failed and they were out of ammo. It was just awful. Farmers would sneak into arbitrary stockyards in the middle of the night to offload sheep, so they wouldn't have the kill them and have the abortoir slaughter them. Some sealed off sheep transport trucks with tarps and pipe the truck exhaust into the chamber and take the scenic root to the pit.
    It is despair for everyone.

    This completely explained the bullshit that meat producers and growers have used to drive up prices on beef and pork. Between 1900 and 1985 meat and pork prices were very affordable and only high end beef products had the premium price, but still not as ridiculous as today. A pound of ground beef in 1900 avg. About 20 cents a pound and in 1985 about 90 to 99 cents a pound. Today its over 3 dollars a pound. Pork has seen the same. And this is because the u.s. government has allowed a lot of our beef and pork to be sent overseas to be processed. Then you take the reduction in the animals produced and the processing plants that littered the u.s to be closed and companies absorbed by the Rich 🤑 to limit production with the constant production cycle and you get people that have absolutely nothing to do with the industry to sit back and get even more rich by controls. The entire u.s.ecomomy is based on false supply. Food which was once a hands off bases to allow people to at least be able to put a decent meal on the table has been turned into a cash cow ( no pun intended ). This false inflation is a national disgrace. Go into your super market and take a close look at everything. A can of corn, the most prolific staple in our diet has went from 10 centa can to over a dollar. Sure you can go to stores like Aldi's ( and i do suggest you do ) and buy a can for 48 cents but stay away from save a lot veggies because that stuff is the bottom of the barrel when it comes to taste. But it shows that how they limit the supply to drive up costs. No way in hell should food be allowed to be sold in this manner. People have become blind to what these companies are doing. I can go to a good sized grower we have here in Michigan and buy an entire head of cabbage for 65 cents. And that is one head. Krogers buys hundreds of thousands of heads and sells them at 65cents a pound. A head of cabbage can weigh in at 10 to 12 lbs. Thats 6 bucks or more. And do you think they paid 65 cents a head. No they paid 10 to 20 cents a head. Nobody needs or deserves that kind of profit on food. These so called social justice warriors are a joke. This false pandemic is another nail in our lifestyle. Do we have a problem with COVID-19 , yes. A pandemic , no. But thats another story that i will touch on. I can tell you this. Do some real research on COVID-19 and you will find a lot of big surprises. They should call the videos by business insider, big business insider. They are not going to tell you the truth. They are going to tell you what matters to them and them alone.

    Hi Abby, in response to your question... my family and I didn’t really switch to any other sources of proteins. We just moved over from having beef to chicken and pork, and if those weren’t in stock or affordable we chose to stick with our pinto beans, eggs and canned meats like tuna and salmon. But going through this time it changed our views on how dependent we are on meat in our daily diet and we want to change that to having a mostly plant based diet, and treat meat like a once a week sort of thing.
