In this week's video, we watch as Tucker does unfortunately take the Hunter we towed in last week, and demolishes it into tiny pieces to fit into the dumpster they had brought in for this purpose. (Sorry Greg!!) I don't know what the rules are on this, but next time they have a boat brought in for demo, we're going to see if there is a way to list it for sale for a period of time first, just in case there is someone out there willing to bring it back to life.
In OUR boat, I kind of take over the show for the week, walking away from fairing bulkheads, and focus on getting bilge paint into a few of our tucked away areas. In the master head I coat the area just behind our shower, where our watermaker will sit on the top portion, and the holding tank will sit below the counter.
In our guest hull I go to work in the bilge area, sanding it and getting it ready to paint. This is one of our 'tougher to access all corners' areas, so I can definitely see why Matt gave the job to me. Just before painting we decided to switch to a barrier coat - which we did get two coats on! - but now we have to wait 5 days for that to cure before moving forward again.
Your work IS professional, not amateur because of the effort put in to every detail. It is solid AND beautiful - it shows !

Absolutely. The difference between a professional and an amateur can usually be overcome by time and patience, often resulting in a better outcome than a lot of work done by professionals who don't care as much about the outcome.

MJ When sanding creates fine dust, like in doing automotive bodywork or in your case, boat work, it helps to use an air nozzle and blow out the dust to improve electrical contact surfaces. Seeing as you are using DeWalt, parts are available for most models through DeWalt replacement parts located in Georgia. I always blow off my tools with air at the end of the day or a job!
Your attention to detail now, will more than payoff upon completion.When others see your boat they will admire the fit and finish you both worked sooo hard to do !!!
You both have chosen the harder path, but you only have to do it once and you'll have years to enjoy it. Well done! The day will come when you're opening her sails and all of the sanding is behind you.
YES , it is an ENORMOUS amount of WORK , sanding , fairing , painting the Interior..MUCH harder than the outside BUT you won't regret it...easy to clean & maintain & LOOKS as good the day we launched her 23 years ago..keep going , you'll be just fine...cheers

I wonder if, for 'painted' surfaces, fairing/sanding/repeat worth the time/money/sweet? Did anyone gave gelcoat/polishing a try instead ? Gelcoat is thick, self leveling, and can leave a mirror finish.

It won't be long and the sanding will be behind you. When you look at the finished surface, you will take pride in how it turned out. Nice find on the new background music.
When we put boats in dumpsters, we use a unit with a thumb. It makes folding the boat in on itself, much easier and less of a mess. Just a suggestion for the guys at the yard.
Always interesting watching your progress and your attitude and willingness to do the perfect job. You do know why. perfectionists are frequently frustrated. There is no such thing as perfect...well, very few things. Keep up the great work :).
We know we won't get it perfect....we just don't want to look at the end product and think "Ugh....if we had just spent *a little* more time on it!!" Lol

@@MJSailing as a powerboat owner, I actually enjoy watching these sailing channels and all the cool places you go, but I think it’s because you edit out how long it takes to go anywhere.
You likely could save a LOT of work by multiple layers of high build primer. You still need to sand, sand, & sand but it comes off easy. On show car quality paint jobs I've sprayed 4-5 coats of high build primer, sanding between each coat until it's perfect. Probably 90% of it comes off but that's part of the game. That sanding dust gets in places you didn't even know you had but I'm sure you've found that out already. A car can have 1,000 to 2,000 hours of prep for paint so just be patient, it will be worth it in the end. Meanwhile... back to sanding! 😂

Its great seeing you guys in my home state doing this incredible project. The history of boat building on the eastern shore of Maryland is absolutely amazing 👍👍👍👍👍. I am north of bay bridge where the Owens boats was built.
I have memories of fishing from a neighbor's 36' Owens on Lake Erie in the '50s. I can still hear the twin Detroit Diesels.
You two may be amateur boat builders, but you are doing an amazing job. Wish I could get to Annapolis next month to meet you both so you can buy a beer or 6 ; ) , but just sold my place and working on building a new sail loft/place to live. Will be living on my sailboat in the marina for a few months during construction and doing canvas work in 14' x 24' storage unit, yay...
I think it's great that you are trying to achieve the best possible end result. Quality is everything. Your bulkhead placement will make your boat super stiff and very strong. Can't wait to see you splash her (still June 2023 Jessica?😉)

Super smart using barrier paint in the bilges.
The automotive body repair industry uses a technique of spraying thick "glaze" on for final perfect surface prep... Maybe there is a way to thin your fairi g to a sprayable product... Applies evenly and thin for finding those minor waves pre-primer...just a thought
Theirs a guy built his own cat from scratch.He often uses Gel Coat then sands and fills any imperfections before a second coat of Gellcoat.Most minor imperfections disappear with the gel coat
I think your sanders are dying because of the glass dust. They might last longer if you give them a regular clean with an air hose.
I’m sure you are right the fine dust builds up and becomes like a a solid piece,you only need to remove the once moving bases plate and clean out this buildup then maybe a bit of oil around the bearing and all should be good. It works on my festo sander anyway.

Really mild winter here. Just does not want to give up. Of course this means we will only have a week of spring before straight into summer heat.
Hopefully this summer we'll be past the sanding phase and we can at least keep fans on us while we work. 😓

Love watching things get crunched up, cool to see how much punishment a boat can take. I could watch a whole series on that! Must be the engineer in me. Gotta agree about the sanding getting a bit OTT, good things it's "true grit Jessica" doing the work, watching Matt do that would put me in a coma - Just being real ;-) Seems like every big project I have ever done had a hump to get over at some point, kinda feels like your at the inflection point. Maybe you could take a day a week to go look at all the sailboats around for sale, or go sailing, or something. Perhaps do some boat flipping for fun/profit... You could teach us a lot by showing us what to look for or think about when looking at boats...

@MJ Sailing let's say "soft in the head" seems harsh, but usually friendly.
I have not seen you attack the ceiling yet. What is the plan for that? Vinyl lining or smooth like the walls? Second question, I think the vinyl linings would reduce the echo sounds and make it quieter. Is there a concern with all the hard surfaces of the hull without vinyl liners that is will be loud?
The overhead will be a drop panel covered in vinyl. It does more to lessen the noise than having the hull sides covered and we can hide lights/wire behind it.

Excellent boatwork with extra care, woven with personal creative segments. The sanding and fairing is relentless. I'm under no illusion that it's demanding work, and it will be there staring back at you! Sad to see the hull being broken up. Is there not boat recycling scheme? I would have been a good boat to the renovated.
Just remember that hindsight is always 20 20!!
Lol. I have a similar intention. To bring a SunReef Yachts look and feel to whatever catamaran I end up buying and fixing up this year. Time will tell whether my perfectionism ends up being a benefit or a curse in the endeavour, lol.

The finish is what you put in to the prep work and unfortunately sanding is a endless pain it seems at times but it will end.
I'm really hoping that everything which comes afterward will seem so easy in comparison.
@@MJSailing Every job has it's challenges and where you's are now is to say the least laborious slow and painful until that finish coat goes on. Then all is forgotten and you can worry about marking up that pristine finish, and you will lol. After building 2 i can say, don't over think jobs, have a few little pet project jobs on the go to brake the monotony of sanding and just be mindful of the end game and the gold you's have set. Splash day will come soon enough along with the pride and joy of knowing we made it. Is it worth all that blood sweet and tears , YES.
If you bought the sander at home depot or Lowes, you don't need a receipt. They can facilitate the return by accessing the card you used for the purchase
Unfortunately (fortunately) it was purchased from our Amazon Wishlist. I think we will get the next one ourselves though, just so we have the ability to replace.
You guys need to have a professional painter come buy and let you know when enough is enough, because you can continue sanding to the end of the time.

Here's the thing about building your boat as a amateur... you want it to be the absolute best so in that fashion it will come out better then the HH watch you will see
I'm not sure if we have the same budget for materials, but we're going to try our damndest to make it as close as possible! 😍
Guys, I don't know if this could help but I like to put more than one coat of fairing between sanding. I apply first coat. I wait for it to cure dry-touch. Then I use a cutter blade at 90º to the surface to remove anything that protrudes and apply another coat over to fill low spots that are often very difficult. You can do this 3 or 4 times, you just have to keep in mind not to wait until it is fully cured (usually 24hrs, depending of the filler). I know how hard is this process, I've just finished to fair and paint the entire hull and deck of my 36ft sailboat and I'm in the middle of doing the same in the interior. I hope to you good luck and patience, It will be worth it.
A scraper is a good idea. We've been using a rasp, but it gets gunky way too fast. Thanks

Ironic in that I remember Matt rejoicing on how much sanding would be saved by purchasing a kit rather than building from scratch, at least that is how I remember it. Regardless, the outcome will be a first class boat.
Sure did. And I think we did save a lot of sanding on the exterior. Same detail on the inside unfortunately
Just be glad you didn't get the idea of gelcoating instead of paint. Tons of sanding afterwards and then buffing. You'll be getting to gelcoating sooner or later all over the hull.

Your sanders will last longer if you clean them with compressed air after every use.

We will be doing veneers in some spaces, like cabinet doors and a few tops of cabinets. The rest will just be faired and painted.

I'm slowly working on the electrical diagram - it got a bit more complicated once digital switching and hybrid propulsion got in the mix. Plumbing is simple and won't require a diagram... But I have the one from Max Cruise that I could follow if I wanted.
Is the name of the composite board that you guys are using on the build? It has a green color to it
Matt and Seth (remember The Sailing Family?) both love the HH boats! This would be a great boat for serious cruising if you can afford it. Kind of makes you wonder how much $$$$ in sweat you two are putting into the Max Cruise, doesn't it? You guys are doing a phenomenal job, though. The Jurassic Park scenes were funny as hell!
The music choices you guys make to go with your videos are streets ahead of any other sailing channel! Really - let's name names: La Vagabonde, Uma, Ruby Rose etc are great, they deserve their viewership (is that a word?) - but you are many leagues ahead of them!

You really need to vacuum up the dust and blow out your equipment. You will find out that your equipment will last longer and the less dust the less chances of a dust explosion. You really need to take a look where the heaviest dust is and clean up and you will not be carrying it throughout your home. In the long run you will have less to clean when you are finally finished
How many hours per week are you working on your boat?
I (Jessica) put in 35-40 hours a week on the boat, plus 30 hours towards editing and TH-cam related stuff. Matt puts in about 60-65 hours a week on the boat, and does researching at night.

@@MJSailing one more question-why did you choose fairing the insides of the hull instead of using some wall lining? It would save you time and could be removed if the finished boat had subpar performance, also additional heat insulation.
Not that I would ever do such a thing, but if your new sander is the same model as the old one, you'll have a receipt to return the old one. 🙈

1 Couple are doing to work of a professional army of a manufacturer, which is admirable, but sure extends the build time, a delays the enjoyment of your previous lifestyle. Is there a projected launch date???
The plan is to launch next summer. And we know that our personal demand for a professional finish is extending the build duration. But at the same time, we don't want to spend our time on the boat once it's completed, looking around and thinking "We could have done better". For us, half the enjoyment is sailing and the other half is crafting. 😉
got to be careful when using tools in a dusty environment you should really be blowing them out after every use

I sell Makita, they have a 3 year warranty don't need a receipt, and a better product than Dewalt.

Contact the manufacturer and they should replace the sander,don't forget to mention all the free advertising you give them by using thier brand of tools on the build.

@@MJSailing doubt it, i've turned in some pretty messed up tools with no questions asked, being an electrician we are pretty hard on tools. Even one that was clearly dropped and in 2 pieces and they handed me a new one and said thanks! keep the grind up you guys are doing great work!
It is so sad to see that little boat destroyed, so much hardware could have bee saved for an other project or save the whole boat for a community inter-urban youth project or else.

@@dw4956 Yes thats how long a GRP boat lasts before it gets to landfill... panels and turbine manufacturers are continually looking for ways to be recycled albeit not that great at the moment... ultimately, 2 wrongs don't make either one right !!
@@DRB68 they cannot be recycled. Its an invironmental dissaster. The crystals for solar panels take enormous amount of energy to produce. Its a scam.
DeWalt tools suck! They used to be called Black & Decker. Get Milwaukee, Bosch, Makita, Delta.
not being a smart arse - smaller palm sander will die if you leave the little filter on it ( the filters actually trap the dust inside the workings of the machine) you would be better served if you want the sander to last - to hook it up to a vacumn cleaner - every time its being used to sand.. Took us a few trips to the repair shop to get the issue identified
