- This video gives a brief overview of the recently inaugurated 4 m International Liquid Mirror Telescope (ILMT), which is located at ARIES's Devasthal Observatory campus in Nainital, Uttarakhand. Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational sciencES (ARIES) is an autonomous institute under the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Govt. of India and specializes in research in Astronomy & Astrophysics and Atmospheric Sciences.
The ILMT is a result of an international collaboration between many institutes from multiple countries. The telescope is designed to perform deep photometric and astrometric variability surveys to detect transient or variable objects. It achieved the first light in April-May 2022 and, following a series of tests and corrections, was formally inaugurated on 21st March, 2023.
The technology behind liquid mirror (LM) telescopes is relatively simple. It requires three components which are:
1. A dish containing a reflecting liquid metal (essentially mercury),
2. An air bearing on which the LM sits, and
3. A drive system.
This project is a result of the collaboration between Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES, India), the Institute of Astrophysics and Geophysics (Liege University), the Canadian Astronomical Institutes, University of Montreal, University of Toronto, York University, University of British Columbia and Victoria University.
