The Porsche 993 - the last of the air cooled 911's - is such a great car....but even the greats can fail you. Thank God this failure didn't get me in deep, deep trouble.
Haha. Oh man. Same thing happened right outside my mechanics shop. It was a quick fix for me. I remember it being some plastic ball that connects to the linkage and my mechanic had a spare part from a 928 that he dropped in there. The car was back on the road in minutes. Good luck with the repair
Hi Will, Great video and coverage and you were soooo lucky with that gear linkage. Keep up the great videos and commentary. On another note, sorry for checking this, but can you have Charles look at your front rotors, I am pretty sure they appear to have been put on the wrong side of each other. Thank you and cheers from Sydney Australia.
Great to see a Porsche used as intended for enjoyment of the journey and luckily an easy fix - very glad failed in driveway as could have been a very expensive retrieval 🙏👏😎
You really dodged a huge bullet. Those remote mountainous wooded areas with dirt roads usually don’t have cell phone coverage for you to call for help if it had broken down there. Unless you have the latest iPhone that you can send text messages to the emergency services by satellite.
Get the RUF short shifter for your 993… it’s so much fun! But please improve your work on the steering wheel. There’s no need to change the hands position on that curves.
How was the Tapoco Lodge? We frequently visit family in Knoxville and driving around that area is beautiful. Saw the Tapoco and considered booking a few nights to enjoy some isolation and do some hiking.
How did it drive on gravel? I have a few miles of gravel where I live. Trying to decide between the 911's, Caymans & Boxsters, which generation will best handle a little 'country' driving.
Will it could be a misperception but has appeared on some videos that you seem to shift more with your fist rather than your fingertips, feeling the way into gear. As Bruce Anderson used to point out never rush a shift on a 911.
i could imagine you hit this link arm with a stone while driving over the forest service way and the connection was halfway loose until your at home, then the welding cracked
I let it ride. Not a problem in daily driving and didn’t want to spend the money right now. Previous owner may have done something with the lights not sure
@@Rennthusiast I'm sure it feels super tight and crisp now! Sometimes components that aren't supposed to ever break actually do break, unfortunately even on a Porsche.
993... always so beautiful. Those wheels actually improved its looks even more.
Thanks for the 993 content Will. That’s what brought me to your channel in the first place.
Keep em coming 🙏🏼👍🏼🥰
Nice car now just position your Porsche crest center caps so that they're pointed to the valve stem as they did when they left the factory. Enjoy!
@@jamesm9486 the reasons for such are well known to the average Porschephile.

993's are sweet. Seems like a super cool daily driver. (but rocking a 2300lb '72 911 with a 265hp 3.2l in the garage for the weekend😎)
The handling is crazy through those corners !
I took that drive around Tapoco back during the pandemic, beautiful area!
Glad you got it back home before it failed!

I was way out on a PCA drive last summer, and when i pulled into my driveway the water pump gave. Got mighty lucky there too!
Love that chuckle in the middle of the video. Sounds too familiar to my experiences.
Your custodianship definitely adds value to the car

Gotta love Charles. Ha ha.
Nice wrist game, Will 👍🏻
Typical Porsche owner. Car broke, might as well wash it. 🤣
Will and your spirited driving again. Glad you were at home and not in the mountains. Did you hear the 911 will become a hybrid? Any thoughts on that?

I like the factory shift action enhanced only by the Fister golden rod.
As far as steering wheel work, you’re probably right. Had a lot of fun though!
Great vid respect from Manchester UK

Great spot. I’ve been going there for years as a place to get away, drive and just generally recharge.
Never seen That fail before. Lucky you!
😅

If a part is going to break the driveway is the best place. That was an OEM or aftermarket shifter? Grand Prix white has been one of my favorites.
Will, I thought your 993 was silver? Did you sell it and get this white one? I must have missed that episode!
Yes, sold it to a good friend about a year ago.
My shifter cable broke on my 981. Luckily, I was less than a mile from home and it broke while in first gear.

I think it might have been halfway torn ever since I bought it. So much less lateral slop is than before since it’s been welded.
What was the determination on the spongy brakes? Also, have you done a headlamp retrofit on this 993?
I let it ride. Not a problem in daily driving and didn’t want to spend the money right now. Previous owner may have done something with the lights not sure
I was thinking $1000.00 to fix hopefully cheaper...love your ride bro!!
Haha ended up being $150 plus $100 for the tow. Feeling GREAT about that!
That never happens. A sub $200 repair on an air cooled Porsche! Congrats!
Is that an aluminum part where the weld broke? Welding aluminum is an imprecise art.
Not sure. It’s been repaired and has much less lateral slop. I think it has been failing for awhile and I didn’t realize it.

Lucky you're stuck in neutral not in a gear
Personal God, miracle.....sometimes you just gotta believe in a higher power 👊🙌
