Only issue I have with the Reaper format is that if you keep winning all the way to the end, you can still only lose in 1 set and you lose the tourney. Minus that, it's pretty hype! I think if the last At Risk player had 2 sets to lost it would make it more fair.
Sparg0 would be such a great permanent lights out member, it was great hearing him talk about LMBM. I hope Sparg0 & Cody Schwab talk about juggling two games at top level.
Reaper format sounds super cool. I'd love to see it with a larger format of like 32 players. Maybe a cutoff where only players ranked within the top 100 are eligible to attend.
Great episode. Always good to have Sparg0 on, and I also like the whole segment exploring that alternative tournament structure. Looking forward to seeing that in action tomorrow. I have another idea for an invitational, summit/throne type tournament structure with maybe like 8-14 players, which is simpler that the reaper idea, but maybe connected in a few ways. Stage 1: Round robin. Everybody plays one set against everybody else. No bracket luck factor whatsoever. The amount of hours needed increases pretty steeply with the number of players, so you could pick whatever number of players you want based on how long you want the tournament to be. But if you had like the ten best players in the world or anything close to that, pretty much every match in the round robin would be interesting to viewers. You could schedule it so that huge matches like 1st seed vs. 2nd seed wouldn't happen until near the end. Tally: Everyone gets a unique rank based on their results in the round robin. Number of set wins is the first factor, and then there are tiebreakers like number of game wins, number of stocks taken, and finally average time remaining at the end of each game (more time remaining is better). Stage 2: "Devil's bracket." Lowest score from the tally faces 2nd-lowest score. Winner of that faces 3rd-lowest, and so on all the way upward until the person with the highest score faces either the person with the 2nd-highest score, or the person who just beat the 2nd-highest. If I were constructing lumirankings from this, I would weight the round robin results at least as highly as the devil's bracket results. But the devil's bracket would be fun way to cap things off. Possibility of the lowest-scoring player from the round robin going on an insane run and beating literally everyone else in a row. But most likely someone with a higher round robin score would win. Either way it's kind of cool, I think.
Light and kola have the same super power. The more messed up their dreads are, the worse they do. The more their dreads look good, better they do. No coincidence both of them just got ranked higher than they’ve ever been 😎
At the reaper, Gluto’s just gonna calculate how many sets he has to lose just for him to go 3-2 on light at least 4 times (with a clutch waft on every last stock ofc 😅)
I remember's Spargo's reasoning for Cloud being even against Steve, mainly how easy it is to get reversaled and lose a stock, but man, I'd like to see him grind the Steve matchup with Corrin. I think that matchup is even where a lot of what Steve throws out, Corrin can contest but she can't neutralize some of his tactics unlike Cloud. A couple other thoughts, Hurt versus the Light's Out Boys (including honorary LOB Spargo) are my favorite rivalies now. I picked up Snake to grind out just to understand how he plays and he requires a lot of work to setup. To play Snake against the fastest players in the meta, that has to be really, REALLY hard (I sympathize with Tweek more now with how much he works against you guys). But they better be careful, if they keep putting the heat on Hurt and if he gets some brain blast epiphany and figures out how to play Snake at their speed, they just might forge the next king of Ultimate in Hurt. Looking forward to this invitational. If anything, I hope this invitational sets a new precedent that pressures other invitationals to experiment to shake up the meta. You guys all have complaints, there's your platform to address them. I wish the Reaper TOs resouding success with this tournament.

What I find hilarious about the comments about Japan's tournaments is that for years it was the other way around, this side of the world had most of the big tournaments and they had to travel to even be considered in the rankings, but now that it's reversed it's an "actual problem". I dont mean no disrespect but the country where the game's bigger will always be at an advantage, that's why most games do regional rankings over world rankings
And you also forget to consider that when it was the other way around, tournaments outside of Japan still accommodates and flies many of Japan out for many years and STILL to this day. I don’t mean no disrespect but I don’t see this happening with non-JP folks wanting to travel there.
@@Senaru that's because there's no money involved, by flying people here you are "helping the community" you're a good guy, and the good guy sells more, you're also trying to grow your scene, to make bigger events and trying to make more money, I'm not saying they're greedy or bad, I'm just saying money is a huge motivator here. But Japan doesnt need any of that, they've been perfectly fine doing their own thing for years and now that it's bigger, they're happy to continue as usual, there's also no money to win there as a player (besides sponsors)
@@TonyStorm21I’m not trying to argue why Japan can’t accommodate like every other country in the world, I’m just saying that’s just how it is and how the actual problem here is how people ignorantly bring up rankings and just “go travel”without ever thinking about logistics + context for players. It’s way more difficult/resourceful getting to places outside of Japan going in or even around their own countries, and now that Japan is the hub of Smash/rankings primarily from having help to go abroad for many many years and getting stronger from this, you have to go Japan now to prove your status. The problem isn’t Japan has all these events and you have to travel there, the problem is everything BEFORE going there and how people don’t understand this. Japan not accommodating has some bearing in it and I’m not arguing why they can’t, I’m just saying that’s just how it is and it’s unfortunate for those outside JP wanting to take rankings seriously and lacking resources to do so. The regional/world rankings point seems practical at the very least.
@@Senaru the actual problem is that regions will never be balanced and we want or hope they are, one will always be bigger and have better opportunities, be it NA, EU or Japan, for example no one flies more people than EU, because they're the smaller scene, they also have the most over the top productions out of the 3 regions, its promotion, pushing the scene to be bigger, which works very well. The fact that there's no pot winnings in JP means that as a core, their players have a different mindset, this is reflected on the fact that a lot of top japanese players's name arent even public, that doesn't happen here, our culture is to play for the love of the game yes, but also money and prestige, Leo went on to say many times that because of the Pot winnings, he HAD to win, for his family, and that's the same for many other players who want to make a career out of this, that rarely happens in JP, players like Tea who want to travel and be at the center of the spectacle are very rare, Yoshidora didn't travel for the longest time because he has a regular job and a family. Reality is, we cant have a world ranking without it being skewed towards a region, which as of right now, it's Japan.
@@Senaru To be fair it's not like Japanese tournaments even accommodates their own local players to their events the same way NA tourneys do with NA top talent. And NA tourneys don't even accommodate most JP players. A lot of them are accommodated by their sponsors or via fundraising.

@@peashooter6628 Uhh, Raru does have an A+ tier win. In fact he also has an S tier win and two B+ tier wins. u watch just to hate, wild
light should not have been #4 lol raru's season was just better to me
They were called the 4 horseman because for the majority of the year NA was always sparg0 vs sonix grands and Jp was miya vs acola. If those 4 all attended a tourney one of them was winning
@lokks2130 did Raru have a winning record on Miya, winning record on Leo, winning record on Tweek, an undefeated winning record on hurt, a win on spargo, sonix, and on Shuton? And an A+ tier win?
I don't think he does, very interesting...
@@peashooter6628 Uhh, Raru does have an A+ tier win. In fact he also has an S tier win and two B+ tier wins. He has better attendance than Light especially at supermajors and got better placements at most of them.
He has a win on Miya, Hurt x2, Doramigi x3, Shuton x2, Maister x3 and Snow x5. I don't know the exact head to head records (I'm sure hurt and dora are winning at least) but if that's the only reason he got placed lower then the LumiRank is definitely overrewarding H2H.
!!
PG is missed :(
EE I love you man but don't disrespect the goats like that in the thumbnail
All jokes mah lol
