    LOL, this show is the reason I used to make sure I had 99 cents in change on me as much as possible thanks to one of the on-the-spot deals. Hey, I was a younger kid haha...once I was old enough to remember watching it. This particular episode I was only a year to almost 2 years old.

    I read that the reason this episode was shot at the NBC Studios was because Buick wanted to show off their models and they wanted to do it in bigger facilities than the ABC Television Studios that "Deal" was normally taped at.

    My husband said that much of the furniture they give as prizes on this show is most likely stuff the company could not sell. Frankly, some of that stuff is hideous, like the pink and orange floral patio furniture and all that Chromecraft stuff. But I would be happy to win washer and dry sets because back then, that stuff was built to last.

    • @MsJanetLouise
      @MsJanetLouise 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That was the style back then and was really well made and nice, much better than the cheap but expensive stuff made today so I'd say they donated the furniture, cars, appliances, furs, trips, etc. not because they couldn't sell but to 'advertise' their products! Great idea, great show!

    • @Stormblast729
      @Stormblast729 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      And the stuff they had back then was made in America and lasted longer. This is why we have lots of antique wood furniture in our home, including sofas from the turn of the century. Stuff was made with pride and durability along with quality. Now you can't find much of anything not made in China. We looked at pressure canners, but found that the ones at the store are made in China. Time to hit antique shops.

    For those who were wondering why the audience was chanting along with Monty after the first contestant missed the money, they were playing off the popular advertising catch phrase of thed it day, for Alka-Seltzer--"I can't believe I ate the WHOLE thing!"
    The third one had it easy...when Jay is out front, then disappears, leaving Monty to do the product plug, it means he has to change to appear with a Zonk.

      ...and yet some things - like new electronics - were more expensive than today. Least in the 70's and early 80's. I remember my Dad (RIP) forking out a LOT of money for an Intellivision (not nearly as popular as the Atari but "better graphics" lol), least for back then it was. Taking into consideration inflation and prices of today, today's electronics are cheaper than back then. Not sure about t.v.s or stereos but VCRs were more expensive than the last time they were purchased regularly before DVDs and digital copies were available.

    In the case of the 3rd contestant she was smart to take the money because Jay Stewart was not announcing the cat food which means that he was going to be part of the Zonk.

    The Inflation Calculator
    What cost $88 in 1973 would cost $513.51 in 2019.
    Also, if you were to buy exactly the same products in 2019 and 1973,
    they would cost you $88 and $14.50 respectively.

    $14,313 that has to be a record for the original BIG DEAL, excluding the Super Deal.

    Rotflmao @ a 55 day cruise!?! Where they do that at???? After about 7 days I'd be ready to get the heck off and go HOME! I couldn't imagine staying on a boat that long....and try paying $11,000 for it today! Hahahaha!

      There are some, but almost all of them are round-the-world cruises. You can get even longer if your ship is larger than the Panama or Suez canals or is just routed to go around cape horn or the cape of good hope.
