Sony is trash, I invested over $13,000 in Sony E-Mount in 2022 and it has been a gigantic disaster with their refusal to give firmware support to the A1 to keep it on par with the Nikon Z8/9 (which keeps getting stronger and stronger each day and their owners are constantly rewarded with newer glass and features). Anyone who invests a dime into Sony in 2023 or 2024 is a mark and has been conned by marketing
36:45 The S5II and S5IIx have phase detect AF that works very well and both cameras are half the price of the R5C or FX3. Besides, most serious filmmakers rarely use AF.
I’m very confused with what canons plans are.. it almost feels like there is no plan lol. A Sony executive told me the reason they’re able to push the boundaries on their cameras is because they sell all their older sensors to the other manufacturers and they keep the newer better sensors for themselves and they’re able to invest all that money back into their systems After switching.. I find my Sony gear insanely boring because it just works. I don’t have to think about the tool when I’m on a job because there’s no issues with it.
I think reputation is their plan, but like GoPro that only goes so far till the competitors innovation is too good to go unnoticed. Yeah boring works for me when it’s for work:)
Congrats on staying busy Brandon! I have been trying to crank up my output as well. Still trying to get the ball rolling on video clients. Josh your videos have helped me a lot and I really appreciate everything you guys do.
Nope, time to switch to Lumix. Thats what I did. The S5II was already a steal at $2k and it's a no brainer at $1,700 on the holiday sale price. Thats right around what Canon and Sony sell their APS-C cameras for. The video features in the S5II are significantly better than anything Canon or Sony has in their more expensive midrange cameras. Just the 6K open gate recording on the S5II places it well above the competition, not to mention everything else it can do. If you want more resolution, the $3,700 S1R is also on an incredible sale for $2,500. The upcoming S1R II with 8K open gate recording will be a game changer, might as well get started on the Lumix system now.
Cool, but Lumix (while offering many awesome things) isn't offering what I need. But yes, Lumix is a great option that many should seriously considering.
I recently got the FX30. The plan is to do weddings with my lady who's a photographer. She'll do the pics, Ill do the video. I want to get a second camera. Trying to decide if I should get another FX30 or get the FX3. As a wedding videographer, will I need the FX3's low light performance? I purchased two Aputure 60X lights. Can I get by with two FX30's or would I be better off getting the FX3 "just in case..."? I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks in advance.
People have shot weddings on the GH5 for years, and the FX30 destroys that camera in lowlight, so if you have lights it should be fine, fast glass also helps.
I have decided that open gate plus some for of internal RAW will be a minimum standards going forward for any cine cameras I buy. That means I will work around the limitations of the BMCC for now and closely follow camera announcements in the new year. I’m very curious about the next FX9, so Sony is definitely on my radar, though maybe a used Venice would work for close to the same money. We will see.
@@BillStreeter I have gotten used to the flexibility of BRAW for my narrative work, and want to have the option of BRAW or X-OCN or a similar format in future camera purchases. Internal because it reduces potential points of failure and allows for more compact rigging (when needed) without losing recording options. In other words, though I use secondary monitors as a convenience on my rigs, I’m not a fan of depending on them as my primary recorder. It’s another power cord or battery to manage, and HDMI is not, in my mind, a robust connection for recording paid content.
I was leaning towards a fx6 for the work I do and maybe a a7r hybrid and b cam. For now I’m sticking with the xh2s and bmpcc6k pro. For Black Friday I found a crazy deal for 2 Godox Knowled lights.
The FX30 seems like a great option for social media work. To comment on the potential fomo I definitely think theres a group that are influenced but It really does just seem like sony checks the box in so many different market segments. Although that comes at the cost of them having an insane number of bodies like you guys have talked about, but it also means they hit alot of shooters needs and the pricing along with the lens availability just seems to be better than other companies.
I got the Sony a7riii -great photo camera but 8bit video-and am thinking of selling to get a fx30. I mainly do video but sometimes do photo too. What do you think? Worth it?
It’s a personal preference / professional need so no hate to the other brands. The Canon R5C (despite its battery limitation) is a beast for photo/video- run & gun, documentary and even pro level shoots. I’ve used- Sony A’s & FX’s, LUMIX S1H and GH’s, as well as Blackmagic from OG Pocket and some Fuji’s and more. They all have their own short-comings, but the battery limitation of the R5C is the one limitation that I am cool with more than the others. Adding a larger battery is an easy fix. Autofocus helps in a busy situation, 8k raw is insane and the 4K 120fps is so good. My experience with Sony over the years has been unreliability/overheating, to 2-3 year old FX’s not staying powered on as well as the horrid menu system was enough for me to not ever want to go back to Sony no matter how many TH-camrs “switch from [brand x] to Sony”.
The S5IIx is better than the R5C in nearly every way and it's half the price....Just the fact that the R5C has a micro HDMI makes it a no go at that price.
Medium format X100V with a fixed 40mm would get me on the Fujifilm train. There needs to be a lot more digital medium format options in 2024 and beyond.
Insta 360 still with just 8bit color, I don’t care about how an action cam works at night I just want an image that can be easily matched with other cameras.
Psshhh...I have both of you guys put together beat on spending money last month (which actually makes me the loser, not the winner)...and Brandon's image looks great on this one. I'm guessing it's the R5C. EDIT: Okay, seeing you wave around your R5C means you weren't shooting on it. So my next guess is it's the OG Komodo but without the mist filter you had been using.
It’s funny because most of the things I hear TH-camrs complain about don’t apply to the cameras if you’re not using it for TH-cam or social media specifically. I’ve come to realize that I may start a yt, tic tok or instagram suite later, but the r6ii I have is for personal photo/video, and my R5c is dipping my toes into making short films. I’m a huge Sony supporter throughout the years but their cameras aren’t interesting to me for some reason. Technologcaly sound, but I’m already in canon system and I haven’t reached the peak of the cameras capabilities. Most of us never will.
My belief (and hope) is that the R5C will just stay at $3400. With the lack of current announcements, and competition, Canon has to remain competitive. Here's hoping my work budget will go through and double up on some R5Cs for content! Going with the Kondor Blue cages. Seem like the sturdiest and have top handles as an option. I still cry thinking that Canon would have released a full frame C100 with the latest autofocus. That was my first cinema camera. But as the years go by, I think about the size of the overall rig. The smaller, the better, truth be told. The less attention I can draw, the better.
@@d.edwardsfreelanceeditorvi4212 that's the thing. I have EF lenses. 2 24-70's and 70-200. I've used them with an adapter on my R6 and Gh5s's for multiple years now. You wont go wrong getting solid used EF glass and adapting.

Excellent choice, after investing $13,000 into Sony last year, I’m beyond disgusted with every release and every step their Imaging Division has taken since that point. No 85 1.2, no firmware support for the A1 or A7Siii. Giving the original a7C (animal/bird eye AF in video), which the A1 still can’t do because they refuse to give it a firmware update.

@@16Stops honestly, if they don’t need consistent AF, and just passable AF, yeah I’d suggest the XS20 over the FX30 everyday I’ve had a lot of people ask before which one they should get and I’ve always recommended the XS20
