The E1 had the most sexy shutter sound. I think Only the Em1x come close. Oh and another thing that would always impress my Cannon and Nikon friends was the door for the memory cards. That things is built like a gorillas arm.

The Olympus E-1 was my very first DSLR, fast forward 20 years and after many camera bodies later the one camera I held on to was the E-1. It still works great too. The color science is top notch. Thanks for this nostalgic moment.

Thank you, Robin, for validating my use of "old" cameras (circa 2012-2016 digital for me, not to mention film cameras as old as 45 years!). It is now, and always has been, about the images and not about the gear.

There are some people I know about that say that "all the digital cameras are disposable" and that "in five years it will be broken or obsolete" or "it's not made to last" and that "digital cameras are all cheap trash compared to film cameras."
My everyday DSLR turned 10 this year, and we have 20 year old DSLRs like this E-1. Clearly they are all still working and they are still very usable to create great photos. All the camera needs is someone to take it out and make great photos with it

Hands down the E-1 was the most comfortable and ergonomic DLSR style body I've ever used. I would still be shooting with mine, but it was impossible (at least it was for me) to review the images properly on the LCD so I wasn't sure I got the shot in focus till I got home and transferred the images. I do miss the legendary 50 f/2 lens. What a classic.

Dear Robin, thank you for the very interesting video. I am in love with my 4/3 system. As a collector it is possible to buy all of the pro cams (as there are only 3..) and all Zuiko lenses. Since several years the system is dead and no new lenses coming out. That is good for my wallet... But back to the E1. In my point of view the style of the image quality fits best to people wearing nostalgic clothes. In this case it would look best if the model wears 50th or 60th dress. I also found that the sound of the cam is absolutely superb. After the sound of the mirror there is a great piep made by the electronic components. The combination of a big lens (like 14-35 or 35-100) with a good sound make the model feel very important... That helps us catching good pictures from a happy model.

Thanks for sharing! I have an E-410 that still works great and with 10MP is more than enough for my use. Other than what you mentioned in the video, the other drawback I would add to shooting 5MP today is that those who have 4K screens will not be able to fill the frame if they are looking at their pictures on a monitor or a TV and will have to digitally zoom in which might create some undesirable artefacts. However, if you're still using a 1080P screen or even 720P you'll have much more details than what you need.

It's 20 years already??? Jesus... I bought mine E-1 new, as well as that 50mm f2 macro, which didn't had that much of the crazy bokeh, but on the other hand it was crazy sharp even wide open. That being said , it's kinda strange to see that lens so battered, since mine appeared brand new even at the time I've sold it, despite heavy use. Note that lens was faster and more accurate on newer bodies like E-3.

In the video you presented your camera but did you presented Erika at a moment? I am not sure.

The video is about the Olympus E-1, not Erika. I am not sure what you are asking for.

Not sure about 5Mpix, but around 10-12Mpix you are well covered for most outputs.
Also my first digital cameras were 4Mpix Casio QV-R40 and 6Mpix Casio EX-Z110 and both served me for years. But at that time every improvement was significant. Going from 4 to 6 Mpix was 50% increase.
I also used to shoot with Pentax K100D which is 6Mpix APS-C and images were quite good. That camera also was not putting high demands on lenses. Even weaker lenses had quite good output as all those small issues were hidden. But then 14.6Mpix K20D was introduced and the difference was very significant. Suddenly you could crop some part of image and still have enough resolution to play with. On the other hand older lenses started showing limits. Now with 24Mpix APS-C K3 without AA filter I can clearly see all the chromatic aberations and imperfections of older lenses :D
But yes, for most outputs I do resize those pics to something like 3000x2000 or 4000x2660 anyway and it is well enough for final customers/users/consumers. Barely anybody has 40" 4K monitor or prints A1 photos.... most people look at photos on some 12" to 24" screens, mostly with just FHD resolution or if they print, it very rarely exceeds some A4/Letter print size.
This leads back to my everyday carry small cameras - even some 12Mpix Oly XZ-2 can do a lot of things and be better than latest mobile phone cameras. It has fast sharp lens, CMOS sensor, shoots RAW.. Imagine having such camera in 2004.. it would easily rival output of hi-end DSLRs of that time and nobody would complain that it does not have enough resolution :D

Hahaa, point on for no croping. And a special feature - no iAuto. I would say that if you want to go old-school but stay digital then this is the way to do it.

I did not even realize there was no Auto mode on E-1! That indeed will force you to play around with the settings more

Thank you Robin! Those CCD sensors are really special, different from the CMOS sensors of today. The Pentax K200D is one the latest camera's (as far as I know) with a CCD sensor, 10MP. Quite affordable camera as well.
The E.Zuiko 50mm macro is an outstanding piece of glass, I still have one. Connected with MMF-3 to E-M1.2 it's faster in focussing than on a E-1 in my experience.

Got myself a brand new looking E5 with less than 1000 shutter count for 350 bucks. BEST deal ever! I have to add a E5 to my collection of oly dslr. The last emperor to rule 4/3 lenses 😂
