The most beautiful programme on TV. Wonderful arc of story, driven along by a brilliant script. Superbly cast. Inspired acting. Apparently effortless direction. A hymn to humanity and nature. The Christmas special was no exception. (Art Garfunkel lookalike: "Sheila, you're breaking my heart." Andy: "You're shaking my confidence daily." Priceless.)

Put simply, Detectorists is absolutely wonderful on all levels: the writing, the directing, the acting, the characters (there are no bad characters, even the bad guys are good guys) the whole thing has a laid back vibe to it; during lockdown (and I know this sounds a little sad) I watched all three series around half a dozen times and was elated to discover a Christmas 2022 special was on the cards. I'd love a fourth series, I really would, because there's something spiritual, something calming, it's a joy to watch and it really makes me feel good.

    • @Paversongs

During lockdown wandering around an empty field on your own with a metal detector was against the rules, think about how stupid that was, we must never forget what they did to the world population. There never was an "emergency", yet many people are still believers, but there IS an ongoing campaign to remove freedoms and control every aspect of our lives. " Get the coil to the soil" while you still can.......

I agree. When I first laid eyes upon the 2 antagonists, I immediately thought...Simon and Garfunkel and when they ever played a few bars of their music, I cracked up! The writing is so clever. I'm trying to find the 75 minute "final" episode after it was decided not to have a 4th season. Would you know where I can find it?

Understated comedy perfection. The Exec Producer summed up Detectorists perfectly - the characters aren't yobs, aristocrats, careerists, geniuses, or stupid - just decent people. I'd guess most viewers have most, if not all, of these characteristics. I think that's why it's so popular.

The perfect show for our troubled times. An escapist antidote to the silliness of our politics and economic situation. Everything about it is good - scripts, cast, location, pace, music and not forgetting the beautiful B roll of wildlife. A celebration of quirky Britishness. I'd love a Detectorists film but I fear it would be taken over by awful American filmmakers and therefore lose its gentle qualities.

I was lucky enough to spend a day with the crew and cast filming on the Christmas special. Mackenzie was nothing like I expected, a real down to earth chap and I spent 20 minutes chatting to him about the process of writing it and producing it. I told him how my other half was sceptical about it but after one episode was totally hooked because of his amazing writing. He was truly appreciative of the reception the programs have been given. At the end of the day I was even officially given a couple of props from the filming!

For those that haven't given this series a look yet, do so, it is wonderful. The directing and casting excellent. The story lines are beautifully written poignant and funny. We all have our individual reason why a given thing appeals to us, for me what shines through is Mackenzie's humility, both his real life character, the character he plays and those he has cast. The above footage reinforces that, but it was evident from the first minutes of episode one. This like a classic novel will be returned to often.. Thank you.

The lingering shots of wildlife, the perfect evocation of a lazy English summer, and, as you say, the feeling that behind the sunshine and laughter, there's something of medieval England and 'the old magic' hanging around to give it a slightly sinister edge. Great show. Binged watched the entire series in three days. Love it. My one gripe with the show, and it's a BIG ONE, is that it's only three seasons. 😥

I feel this gem of a series has recently received a huge, new following from people who have only just introduced themselves to it - myself being one of them. After becoming instantly hooked, minutes into the first episode, I couldn't believe I'd gone eight years not being aware of how good this programme is.

This series is on par with gone fishing by mortimer and whitehouse. And I think what it really hammers home is the beauty that we seem to have lost in the simplicity of genteel and wholesome hobbies like metal detecting, fishing etc

It's quite an old 'management speak' saying, it's written in here so that we as, an audience mock 'Terry' for using it.

Detectorists is a fantastically whimsical place to escape to - I love it and its the best comedy on TV - even the theme from Johnny is calming and guides you in to events in a warm meadow in England - love it.

I discovered Detectorists just after s1 began, have liked Toby Jones' work. After 1ep I was absolutely hooked. Its best thing that's been on tv (as has also been Mac's revival of Worzel Gummidge ' - much better than the Pertwee era version).
Have been trying to get friends and family to watch it. Have had mixed reviews but it's such a beautiful show. And as someone who has a BA + MA in History and been out detectoring many years ago when growing up living on the Isle of Wight and during my time at Durham Uni, I can relate to it.
Mac is a genius and the casting is superb

Now, I'm sort of a difficult person when it comes to tv shows and movies. Even in my most favourite shows, there's always at least one, probably several actors and/or characters that rub me the wrong way.
But in this show, nope, not a single one. I love them all.
The whole DMDC, their families, all awesome.
You'd think Varde, without (almost) any lines would disappoint, but if you really watch the scenes with her in, concentrating on Orion Ben, there's a couple pearls in there too.
The supposedly unlikeable Antique-searchers/Dirt Sharks, fantastic.
The farmer from season 1 with the invisible dogs, a juggernaut of a performance.
The mayor in season 2, I've never seen that actor before, but what a joy, he was tremendously funny.
The list goes on, this show just has the greatest casting.
In the end, if I really, really had to pick a favourite (and it can't be Lance because as a Toby fan I'm prejudiced) I would have to say Russell. Such a funny character as it is written, but the performance, chef's kiss. So many little nuances where Pearce Quigley just makes the character his own. And the chemistry with yough Hugh is so charmingly funny.
I can't believe the man is not a bigger star. Loved him also in Rovers, and the short appearance in Car Share.
Honourable mention to Terry, he reminds me of our team leader at work.
