The Wood Elves have come the closest to actually beating the Germans. Not what I was expecting. Greater maneuverability or something? Or does Tree Hitler really just hit that Hard? The archers hidden in the forest even managed to take down the zeppelin!

Do the game mechanics allow attackers to ignore potential targets, or do they just aggro on the first opponent in their path? If the elves could charge past the armored vehicles, they would've had a chance at ripping through the riflemen and attacking the artillery, which does the real damage.

You can order them to attack the artillery, but if the unit being ordered gets caught on another hostile unit in it's path, it will engage with said unit and ignore previous orders.
*Edit* Unless they have enough mass to get through to push them out of the way.

Well the Germans won but it was more costly than against other factions 🤔 perhaps if they tried to funnel them into the river or built barricades in both sides of the river it would have made it not only easier to open fire on them but also protect the ground troops from the assault.
