      air fryer is not worth the money, the reason you deep fry food is because it undergoes a chemical change when it's deep fried and most fried foods actually rely on oil to soak into the food which part of the reaction happens. My mom got an air fryer recently and she likes it for a reason you hadn't mentioned, which is that using the oven heats up the whole kitchen, while using the air fryer doesn't. The fact that the heat isn't leaking out so much is probably one reason the air fryer is so much more efficient-- but it also makes it much more comfortable to cook things during the summer!

    • @AlexaFaie
      @AlexaFaie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Get a Toaster Oven with a fan built in to it. Oster makes a good one. Toaster ovens are the best option for a single person, I should know, big ones can even cook a full pizza. Just remember when you're trying to "air fry" in an oven make sure the food isn't sitting on a pan or sheet of foil. Air needs to circulate around the food so the hot air can cook from all sides.

      However, if a product is in any way going to be called a fryer, I would think it would fry. I assumed these were popular because they simply used less oil. However, I saw no frying at all. @squiddybilly 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@rickmiletic1376 I agree with your comment about it being a mini convection oven, but you also have to add in the term 'industrial-strength'. It's the very hot air that is fan-circulated around the food that mimics the action of hot fat circulating around deep-fried food.
      Oven chips are already coated in oil, so Ann didn't need to add any oil to them. I recommend you watch other air fryer videos to see how coated/battered chicken and fish turn out. There don't stay wet and soggy, that's for sure!
      Air fryers have been around for about 10 years now, especially in Asia and Australia/New Zealand. Have a search for older blog posts from food bloggers from those parts of the world to find out how versatile they are.

    The difference with a airfryer and a normal convection oven is optimal air flow. In chemistry the rule of fist is that if you double your agitation, you can reduce in 10°C or use half the needed time. Now I never compared the air flows between them, but the story of Phillips also focuses on the optimal air flow.
    Here in The Netherlands airfryers are becoming very popular. They even sell a lot of products specially designed for airfryer and oven use. We use it for all kinds of product. We still have a deep fryer, but it stands retired for a few years already in the garage.
    Some tips to prepare in your Airfryer are sausages, other types of meats, reheat pizza slices and off course the Dutch cheese snacks in puff pastry we like to call “Kaassoufle’s” or to translate cheese soufflés (use some herbs in the bread crumbs 😉)
    Philips Netherlands also sells a lot of tools for optimal use of your airfryer, this so you don’t need to cover up your brownie 👍

    "Convection" isn't a binary state. Probably the oven and the air fryer are moving air at different speeds, and they're definitely moving air in different directions. Both of which have an impact on how fast the heat transfers into the food.

    • @zeophen
      @zeophen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yeah, there are still uncertain variables here. I have seen similar comparisons where a convection oven goes about 50/50 for slightly better results than an air fryer. Overall, test your own oven's results first, experiment a little and see if cooking slightly hotter for less time and finishing with the broiler gets decent results. Then if you still want an air fryer, either get a Convection Toaster Oven or a Pressure Cooker with Air Fryer attachment. If space is the issue, both of those will earn a spot in your kitchen and have more flexible use. Sidenote: my convection oven doesn't cycle the top broiler element on while baking, so if I raised my tray up like her, it would make results worse, not better.

      My partner and I only cook for 2, so often the oven seems overkill (for example we only want to heat two pre-baked breadrolls). My airfryer is like a mini oven (so instead of the basket, it has a door and trays plus it has a rotating thing that can go in for fries). We really like it to make small stuff, so much faster and now I know even more energy efficient (I expected that). When baking, you have to try out a bit, I think rule of thumb is -25°C and -20% cooking time, but each appliance is different, mine needs less change in temperature but the cooking time is usually spot on. I bought a small cake tin that perfectly fits in mine and I made two cakes - first one was a mess but second one came out nicely :).

      It wasn't. Air fryers are high-speed small convention ovens. The food rests in a basket where the holes in the bottom allow for more circulation of air. Comparing that to cooking on a solid sheet pan that doesn't allow for as much air circulation is an unequal test. I cook crispy things on a wire rack, not a sheet pan, in my convention oven and that makes a big difference. It's not the same as a air fryer still, but air fryers take up so much counter space for as often as I make fries, because they are unhealthy.

      Sadly she doesn't understand that the metal sheet she is cooking on in the oven is why the chips don't get crisp as fast. The air fryer lets the heat circulate and hits the chips from every direction. Secondly, the hot air is moving at a faster speed than in the oven and in a much smaller area. That means the intensity of heat of the air fryer has a much greater effect on food.

    Here's my take: When you "fry" in oil, you are surrounding the food in hot oil to cook it from all directions at once. When you "fry" in an "air fryer," the fan is blowing hot air around the food so that the air itself is heating the food directly from many directions. The main difference between this a and the regular convection oven is that the latter relies on simply raising the temperature of the ambient air in the large oven, while the air fryer is blasting the food with heated air...Allowing for faster cooking.

    • @maxpowers4436
      @maxpowers4436 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Thats why you PRE HEAT and "regular oven" BRUH wtf are you talking about a "regular convection oven" is fan forced and blows hot air around just like an "air fryer" They are literally both convection ovens. The marketing is just better on one and people have fallen for it HARD.

      @@maxpowers4436 They are presumably not equally powerful fans, though, and aerodynamic things like the geometry of the oven and what sort of grate is underneath will dramatically change how much they heat the food, since the dwell time of the evaporating water vapor is an essential variable. I'm not on Team Air Fryer yet, but I would like to see further technical breakdown. Perhaps in 30 years we'll all have upgraded to wall ovens with a 'Hyper-Convection' feature that directs a leafblower at the pan.

    • @kathrynarmstrong9980
      @kathrynarmstrong9980 3 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      @@maxpowers4436 if OP is American, this actually doesn't apply. Most Americans don't have true convection ovens like other countries (usually European) do. American ovens typically have a top and bottom heating element that do cook with ambient temperature. European, sometimes called true, convection ovens have the top/bottom heating elements + a fan that blows the air around making it actually like a a larger air fryer. Pre-heating in a non-fan convection oven, as would be most present in American homes, would never give you the same end result as an air fryer. If you watch American vs European baking or cooking shows, you can see this really obviously. It mostly comes up, however, when you're watching shows that use amateur bakers/cooks. You'll hear all the time in, say GBBO, the bakers talk about "(temperature) fan" when pre-heating their ovens for various baked items. I have occasionally heard someone on GBBO say something about difficulty with a fan oven, but it was once or twice out of like 7 seasons. In American amateur cooking/baking shows, the comments about convection ovens are much more prevalent because true convection ovens are more likely found in professional kitchens and not in the home thereby meaning things are different. This is also why you need to watch your cook times if you're using a recipe from someone you know to be American/European and you don't live in those countries. Cooking temperature will be the same, but cook time could be off and that makes things hard if you're an experienced cook/baker but used to using only one type of oven.

    Part of the reason the fries cooked faster is because of the airflow coming from the bottom. If you placed the fries on a rack in the conventional convection oven, it may speed things up quite a bit. The fries sitting on the cookie sheet have a side that is in full contact with the sheet, whereas the fries in the air fryer they have the holes in the bottom of the basket and they tend to end up semi layered, offering more air flow to keep them drier so they aren't steaming near as much as the conventional convection oven. I think a secondary thing with it is the location of the fan and overall size difference. The air fryer has it directly above and close to the heating elements, so all the air is being more consistently and evenly moved and heated, where unfortunately with the conventional oven, the fan is on the back of the appliance and the fries are only REALLY getting hit with the direct dry heat from one side, further inhibited by the rimmed baking sheet blocking some of that airflow. You would be better of just plain baking them in that oven than convection without the parchment paper, this would get the fries in direct contact with the hot metal, aiding in browning. If you're going to do the convection, you would definitely want them on a rack in the tray to get airflow on all sides.
    You could add a tablespoon of oil to the fries in a bowl, toss them in it THEN air fry them, that would give them a little bit more of a fast food crisp/taste as well. If you value your time, and aren't making a huge meal an air fryer is the way to go. Or just plain don't want to heat up the entire kitchen in the dead of summer. There are also now air ovens like the NInja ones.... that do a bit of everything with elements above and below that make them all the more convenient to do a larger number of say... chicken tenders or whatever in short fashion. I made crisp broiled salmon, then roasted some seasoned squash in ours this past weekend and it was amazing.

      A convection toaster oven is much more superior than an air fryer.

    • @Llamanescent

      If it has a convection setting, it may get similar results to an air fryer, but you would have to test it. Mine specifically has an "air fry" setting.
      A normal toaster oven definitely won't give you the same results though.

      I have one of these as well. My parents gave it as a gift. Back when my husband was in a tint dorm w no kitchen. We still use it years later. It is the best to reheat pizza or baked goods or baking/cooking. I use it for my gluten free chicken nuggets all day everyday. Or as often as I have them in my freezer anyway. Or for french fries sometimes too. The amount you can do is smaller but I generally don’t need to cook a ton anyways w just me and my husband living here.

      @@oweninsertlastname1575 Why? I mean, I have a regular oven and and air fryer and rarely do they get used for the same tasks. If I'm doing chicken wings or fries, they're absolutely going in the air fryer. Even steak comes out of the air fryer top notch. If I wanted to do something larger that requires a longer cooking time, it goes in the oven. I can only speak from my experience, but generally whilst the oven and air fryer do toughly the same thing in theory, the results tend to differ.
