As a lifelong ballpoint user I guess this is another rabbit hole I should research, sometime.

Perhaps people are interested in a pen in between $8 and $95. A good choice would be a Faber-Castell, such as the Loom, all of which come with excellent steel nibs, for maybe $40-$60.

      Good suggestion! 👍

Yes, love those Faber-Castell steel nibs. I have the Ambition and it's one of my favorite nibs.

The grip and the hexo are good alternatives from faber castell too. Any pen with Schmidt nib is a win in my experience. My edc lately is the $8 Kaco edge with a medium Schmidt nib that came on it. It replaced my kakuno for daily use. My expensive pens are too psychologically heavy. I have one with a falcon nib that I bought for specific uses, but my other expensive ones I have to force myself to use. I’ve come to prize the cheapest great-writing experience above all else. The Kaco also has my favorite cap, so it may be hard to beat.

$100 for a Sailor Pro Gear Slim seems way too low.. maybe it's a "mini"? I think they are typically $220 or more. I'd like to try one before purchasing, because I bought a Sailor Compass and don't love the massive feedback it has -too much feedback. I keep hearing that Sailor is a must-try, but I don't think the steel nib on the compass is anything like the PG or PGS. Thanks.

Nope, it's a regular Sailor Pro Gear Slim. Cheaper because it is purchased on Amazon, probably from a Japanese seller, so you don't have to pay import taxes or the huge markup that US retailers have to tag onto it (plus the yen is low at the moment which makes it even cheaper). $92 USD right now: www.amazon.com/Sailor-11-1224-303-Fountain-SHIKIORI-Medium/dp/B00XVVG2E8/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?crid=1HG1MFZNWOCEX&keywords=sailor+pro+gear+slim+fountain+pen&qid=1684616556&sprefix=sailor+pro+gear+slim%2Caps%2C171&sr=8-1&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.006c50ae-5d4c-4777-9bc0-4513d670b6bc
Also, yeah, the Sailors I have experienced are still smooth, but with a little drag or audible feedback. Very similar to the feeling of writing with a pencil.

I will back up Stationary Dev…I’ve seen this particular model (Pro Gear Slim) being a very low price…as of today (6/5/23), I see it listed as USD$75.90. I’m in the US, but unfortunately this one can’t be shipped to me since I’m in Hawaii. I’ve seen this happen before where if I change the shipping address to somewhere on the US mainland, it’ll ship there. (had my husband get me a Platinum 3776 via a friend who was visiting us when the pen was around $90)

I have two platinum meteors and i hated them. They wrote horribly, hard starting and scratchy. The platinum/muji pen was way better even though they are about the same price with the same nib, feeder, and section oddly. I have better writing experience with way cheaper jinhaos

That is unfortunate. All the platinums I have used have been great out of the box!
