      You ever been to New York? People are constantly jumping signals to make it across the street in a gap. It's very easy to follow that cue and when you sense danger back pedal to safety. It happens all day every day. I see it on my rides.

      It's a natural reaction. She is old for God's sake even young people do that. It's to go back to the safety of the sidewalk if you feel danger. She couldn't get back out in time. Nobody wants to get run off by a bike at highs speed on purpose. What are you trying to say she is trying to get run over on purpose so she can sue? So do we have followup if she is suing? I don't think she is suing so that theory goes out the window if the at is the case. This is just sad and tragic and could have been avoided if everyone use common sense. Good luck suing a bicycles don't carry insurance. You can try to sue them but good luck collecting. The bike was clearly most at fault. Both were at fault. She was already out in the crosswalk for a while before cyclist even ran the intersection and should have seen her and have slowed down. Cyclist assume wrong that the lady would keep walking and walk faster but lady was slow and hesitated and instead moved back when see saw and heard the cyclist yell wo wo wo..
      Pedestrians have a right to move back and even turn around. It is your fault if you struck them anytime they are in crosswalk unless they just darted out of nowhere and doing it against a red light. Her light was about to be green but she stepped out too early before the green. However there were others who ever went ahead and weren't' struck and that should tell the cyclist to slow down as people are now crossing. Also when she was stuck it was green for her so she could be in there at that time so cyclist struck her while she had a green light. Cyclist should never have ran that light from the start. Cyclist took a risk trying to outrun a light and this is what happens. She was already in the crosswalk for some time already before being struck due to cyclist not paying attention or misjudging. You can clearly see cyclist eyes looking down at the the ground and not looking up until it was too late to stop. the very last second he looks up and sees her and it was too late. Cyclist was going faster so needs to scan further down the road. She couldn't see a crazy high speed cyclist coming that fast and even if she did she assume his ass would stop as pedestrians have right of way especially in crosswalks. Others people were crossing the crosswalk when she was crossing but they made it just in time. Cyclist almost ran the other dude over as well but the dude just made it into the sidewalks split seconds.
      The cyclist ran a red light. It was orange before the cyclist got to the intersection and turned red while the cyclist was still in the middle of the intersection means she ran a red and didn't' make it. Also if cyclist didn't say wow which startled the lady and made up step backwards. Just pass by and it would have fine but the startling her made her react the way she did. Sometimes the warning that is too late is the dangerous thing to do. Lady probably would never known a bike just passed by her. Shouting at her just make her freak out. I know that wasn't the cyclist's intentions to freak her out but that's exactly what it did which shouldn't be so surprising. How about slow down and pay attention to pedestrians in crosswalks then this could have been avoided. Cyclist never want to slow down because they don't want to lose their speed and momentum as it takes more energy to get back up to speed so always sipping around trying to dangerously beat lights.

    • @crucisnh
      @crucisnh 6 ปีที่แล้ว +178

      Conor, this is no excuse. It doesn't matter if you're driving a car, riding a bike, or walking, you should never blindly do something because you know that you're right when there's a risk that the other guy could do something a little unexpected (and possibly wrong). I've watched too many videos of cyclists who get right hooked because they stupidly think that because they're in the right that therefore the car won't turn right. And when they do make the right turn (wrongly), who pays the real price? The cyclist!
      In this case, the cyclist should NOT have tried running the yellow light. The cyclist should have slowed down much sooner when he saw pedestrians who might step into the cross walk. It doesn't matter that he was in the right. He created this situation by not being more cautious and respectful of others who might just make a mistake. Never assume that the other guy will do exactly what they should do, and you'll avoid a lot of these situations.

      She didn't randomly stop and back up. She saw the other numbnuts coming at her and attempted to avoid him, only to be careened by the other. The light turned YELLOW long before these two pedal pals got to the intersection. And, the light turned RED before they actually entered the intersection. The bicyclist is clearly at fault and BOTH bicyclists (i.e, the one with the helmet cam too) were operating in a recklessly manner.

      A S the biker thought she was going to keep walking forward, there was no way he would have known that she was going to stop. It is a little cruel, but she's a lawbreaker. I would say the same thing about anyone else who did this. I dont have double standards unlike some people.

    • @Drood.
      @Drood. 6 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      I mean I don't claim to know the law in other countries, but the light was red for the cyclist, when i was taught to drive you're told on an amber light to prepare to stop, not rush through before the red.
      But also in my country the white stripes on the road denote a pedestrian crossing on which pedestrians have right of way, but from reading comments that dosent seem to be how the law works in the country this was shot in.

    • @gazebo935
      @gazebo935 6 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      @@Drood. the lights on the poles at the corners of the intersection all had red hands on them, meaning that it is illegal for pedestrians to be on the white lines, or the crosswalk. This was shot in new York city, and I've seen firsthand people almost being killed because they were in the crosswalk on a red hand. The yellow light in the US is a bit more leniant, as it means if you can make it through the intersection safely, you can go. Also, if you are halfway or more into the intersection and the light turns red, it is legal by all accounts because you can't just stop in the middle of the intersection lol. As you can see in the video, the cyclist involved in the accident was already fully in the intersection, as he was fully over the solid line that shows where the intersection begins when the light turned red. I took drivers education about a year and a half ago and still have my handbook so I have that for reference too lol

    • @tankninja1
      @tankninja1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      No the cyclists blew the light. Yellow means you need to be slowing down, which they clearly could've done because the light turns red as the camera man enters the intersection on the backwheel of the pink shirt.

      Gary Rowe - You must mean: not to cycle into people crossing the road against the red without looking in the direction of oncoming traffic, who then notice you coming, freeze, and then start to back up, into your path, as you try to avoid them. She was behaving unlawfully and unpredictably.

    • @garyrowe58
      @garyrowe58 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      If only they'd recognised that there might be a risk of hitting the person, and used their brakes ...
      Yes the person should not have been there, but as an adult in control of a machine on the road you have a responsibility to act like an adult.

    • @wholeshebang1
      @wholeshebang1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      If only the woman had not chosen to cross the road on a red light, well before the other light was even yellow, endangering herself and others, i.e. the oncoming cyclists. She didn't even look for oncoming traffic. What if there had been a car coming?
      I highly doubt the cyclist was behaving childishly or irresponsibly. He was acting within the law, and if you look closely, his hands *were* on his brakes all the way through the intersection (which he entered lawfully on a yellow), and he attempted to stop, once he saw the woman was backing up. It looks like he tried an evasive action to prevent a collision. Cyclists are at risk, too, of being hit and crushed by cars. They don't need pedestrians acting stupid.

    • @garyrowe58
      @garyrowe58 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yes, the pedestrian should have looked towards the oncoming traffic. That's obvious.
      However, you say you highly doubt the cyclist was driving irresponsibly when he kept steering his bike directly at a pedestrian while peddling at 15mph steadily across most of the intersection; he only stopped peddling about 1.5 seconds from hitting the pedestrian, and then braked far too late to avoid hitting the pedestrian. That was irresponsible, and showed woefully inadequate judgement. And yes, the pedestrian made their mistakes too.
      Lawfully entering a junction does not mean you abdicate responsibility for your actions.
      The fact someone has their hands covering their brakes is meaningless if they keep peddling and not slowing down until an accident is unavoidable.
      Looking like you are trying an evasive action to prevent a collision is meaningless when you do it so late it is totally ineffective.
      It is the responsibility of drivers & cyclists to be in control of their vehicle, and pedestrians - even those who have made a mistake - cannot magically disappear. The cyclist reacted far too late for what was in front of them, and that is irresponsible. As an adult, you have to take responsibility for your actions, and the cyclist's actions caused him to collide with a person directly in front of him.
      Why keep harping on about the mistakes the pedestrian made without accepting that the cyclist made a pretty fundamental error as well?

    Light was yellow before he entered the intersection but the pedestrian was jaywalking. Both were wrong but the cyclist was driving a vehicle and as such has to yield to pedestrians even if they’re in the wrong. My conclusion: pretty much everyone in NYC have cranial/rectal inversion coupled with a sense of entitlement and a secret deathwish. This is why I avoid road cycling.

When it’s busy i wait for a green light because a car can turn on yellow as well and hit a cyclists. Every situation on the road has to be treated differently and cyclists bike the same way no matter what’s going on.

They can assign, for example, 70% of the blame to one of the victims and 30% to the other, or balance it any other way they want to. The officer's judgment when writing out tickets will affect the decision but won't be the whole story to the insurance adjusters.

    Idk about NYC, but In Canada this would be the cyclist’s fault. You are required to stop at an amber light if it is safe to do so. He had ample time to stop, but went through anyways. In Ontario, you are also not supposed to enter an intersection while a pedestrian is inside, whether the light is green or not. The light changed to red as he entered the intersection, further evidencing this. Yes, she shouldn’t have been crossing, but the cyclist is legally at fault.

They were all just ignoring the rules. And sure they COULD yield to a yellow, but they don't have to and they were going fast enough to have been fine if those pedestrians didn't decide to risk their lives for no reason.

    • @klamin_original

      The Balloon Jin Lets Go In BST In Germany you have to stop when it’s possible and in this case it would definitely have been possible.

    • @plush3106

      Ni Pr well this isn't germany, and they aren't required to, sorry to say. They wouldn't have caused any accidents if those pedestrians didn't decide to jaywalk because the light would not have turned for a few seconds for the other cars and pedestrians. Basically, its the issue of why that lady stopped in the street or was in the street. From his line of sight, he saw he would've passed the pedestrian unharmed, and if they can walk whenever they please with no regard to cars or bikes then the bike really doesn't need to avoid them with such a large gap like people claim they do. If she had continued, it would've been fine. If she'd followed the law, it would've been fine. But she didn't. It's on her.

      Subbie Jon red means stop. If a yellow light is in front of you then you still have the right of way. Quite a simple concept as your light doesn't turn yellow while giving any other traffic a green. Lights work as follows, green light allows traffic to move, light turns yellow, light turns red. If you are in the intersection then you don't stop when it turns red. Then there is a delay of an average of 2 seconds before the next cycle of lights change to allow another direction of traffic to proceed. Traffic code clearly say you may proceed when a light turns green after yielding to traffic already in the intersection and if safe. This concept applies to both the vehicle and pedestrian traffic equally. The pedestrian here entered the crosswalk illegally with a red crossing signal. While there is no question that the cyclist could have stopped he entered the intersection before red. The pedestrian was about to walk into the path of the cyclist that recorded it, then stopped and back steps right into the path of the other cyclist. At the moment of impact you can clearly see that the crosswalk is still displaying a red hand. Sorry but no matter who was in the crosswalk, bike, pedestrian, skateboard, etc they are in the wrong. The cyclist may have pushed the yellow but the pedestrian ran a long stale red. She is at fault here.

    They didn't even slow down, when seconds earlier people were crossing. This was completely avoidable by the cyclist if he slowed down as he should have. Legally it might not be his fault in the US, but he IS responsible. I'm willing to argue that both of them are responsible, but the cyclist was the one that yould have avoided the collision, since the pedestrian was in clear view for him. He was going way too fast aproaching the crosswalk. If the lights are green, and the cyclist goes on, but there are pedestrians on the road, he just hits them, cuz the light was green. He's still at fault, he could have slowed down.

It’s usually people who think like this who make traffic worse because they always insist on their rights instead of just adjusting to the situation. rick allen: *Have no idea where cyclists head was except for "I am not a licenced vehicle therefore I can ignore all stop signs, lights, right of way, and general good common sense.*
      So in other words, you think cyclists are worse than drivers in follow rules and behave worse? If so, let's see at some studies and research about this:
      *New study shows that "scofflaw cyclists" don't break the law any more than drivers*
      "It is a standard trope that cyclists ignore red lights, blow through stop signs and generally ignore all the traffic rules that govern cars and are not very nice to law abiding pedestrians either. People on bikes are often told that "If cyclists want legitimacy, they should obey the rules of the road”. And indeed, a new study find that cyclists do break the rules fairly often. But guess what? So do drivers and pedestrians, just as often."
      "When it comes to rule-breaking bicyclists, one popular opinion is that if bicyclists want to be taken seriously as road users, they need to obey the rules of the road like everyone else. Our survey results and the literature review both suggest that drivers break the rules of the road just as much, if not more, than bicyclists. The other common argument is that cities need to step up bicycle law enforcement to improve safety. While bicyclists are certainly not immune from causing harm, the literature suggests lower societal costs and safety risks associated with lawbreaking bicycling as compared to lawbreaking driving. Drivers speed, roll through stop signs, park in bike lanes, and run lights that have just turned red while still considering themselves to be law-abiding citizens. Despite research showing a causal link between such driving behaviors and increased crash rates, injuries, and fatalities, society continues to see these behaviors as rational decisions within our transportation system, other than in the relative minority of places that take Vision Zero as more than a buzzword. Our results suggest that bicyclists seem to be making the same rational choices."

      *Cyclists are a bunch of scofflaws!*
      *Response:* No more than anyone else-and you don’t like us when we follow the rules.
      *The Lowdown:* Yes, cyclists break traffic laws. So do redheads, Methodists, white suburban dads, and municipal bus drivers. We-people, that is-break traffic laws every day by bike, foot, and car. For instance, a study by the Society of Automotive Engineers found that in 2012, the nation’s 200 million drivers [now 210 million] use their turn signals just 48 percent of the time. www.bicycling.com/training/a20042771/the-best-responses-to-anti-cyclist-claims/
      *Jumping red lights*
      •In 2016(GB),11,783 cycles were involved in incidents in which a police officer assigned one or more ‘contributory factors’(CFs) to at least one of the parties at the scene. Officers assigned 138CFs for disobeying an automatic traffic signal to the cycle, i.e. to just over 1% of them - about the same percentage as it was for cars.
      •In 2012, disobeying a traffic signal did not appear in the top ten most commonly occurring contributory factors allocated to a pedal cycle in fatal incidents involving at least one cyclist.
      •A TRL study for DfT found that disobeying a traffic signal did not feature in the top ten contributory factors attributed to cyclists in fatal, serious or slight collisions from 2005 - 2007 in Great Britain. Disobeying ‘Give Way’ or ‘Stop’ signs or markings contributed to 5% fatal, 4% serious and 3% slight
      collisions - this factor was bottom of the top ten list.

      *Stats on Cycling Through Red Lights*
      The report concludes
      A total of 7502 cyclists were surveyed across all of the sites. Of these, an average of 16% violated red lights, whilst the remaining 84% obeyed the traffic signals. Therefore it can be concluded that the majority of cyclists do not ride through red lights. However, the 16% that do must be discouraged from ignoring traffic signals.
      Accidents at Red Lights.
      *Quite revealing is the statistic*
      “Of pedestrians injured in London in a collision caused by red light jumping only 4% involve cyclists, whereas 71% occur when a car driver jumps a red light and 13% when a motorcyclist does. As an organisation representing those two road user groups, CTC suggests IAM ought to call for more road traffic policing to enforce traffic laws, rather than highlighting red light jumping by cyclists.” CTC
      From media coverage, it often feels running red lights is primarily a violation by cyclists. But, just 4% of accidents suggests that the danger posed by motor cars is much greater.

    With that many people in the crosswalk, it seems like the common sense move would have been to wait at the light and proceed on the green. Wether you have the ROW or not, pedestrians are vulnerable just like the people riding them. We all have to look out for each other and not just focus on your own thing excluding others and being essentially inconsiderate of their safety and other essential human rights. This lady should have looked if she was just going to walk out, but nobody here truly deserved to impact anything. *Think of others - if we all did that we wouldn’t have to think of ourselves.*

      Bikers in NY City do not have any common sense. I have no idea what is in their brains. Bikers get killed and people get killed by bikers all year round in NY City and more in the summer. It is the same story over and over. The worse are the tourist coming to NY City and riding bikes on the streets of NY City. ...sorry folks just in Manhattan could be over 10 million people. There are biking areas off the main traffic roads that is more reasonable

    Damn man that is sad. When you get to that age and something like that happens. That fall is going to affect her for the rest of her life, she will never fully heal.
    Not to beat you guys up, just be careful I had a cyclist hit my dog. It took everything in me not to get violent the guy almost killed my dog.

      So true. Yet the uploader's first thought was to offer his video evidence and his support to his fellow cyclist. He didn't even care to offer the video footage to the pedestrian _or even acknowledge her._
      I can see how this shit happens. If you cycle every day among vehicles you're going to feel vulnerable and defensive, which you have to counter by being assertive, and perhaps even a little aggressive. I think the uploader's so used to asserting his right of way, or indulging in righteous indignation when other road users encroach on that, that he totally forgot how vulnerable pedestrians are.
      Always remember the Golden Rule and look out for one another regardless of who's in the right, and when you see an old lady crossing the road, _even if she's jaywalking,_ *you yield* lest you inflict a life-changing injury. It isn't rocket surgery!

      Jose Martin Believe it or not, most cyclists do not possess superhuman reaction times. If your dog runs out in front of a cyclist then it is your fault for not keeping it under control. Obviously if the cyclist went out of his way to hit your dog then thats a whole different matter, but something tells me thats not what happened...
