    I am a career carpenter and love my ATOMIC drill , for drilling decks or hanging doors etc all day it is ideal, I even put a 600x16mm auger on it in speed one of course ,it powered it through 300mm of seasoned hardwood easily ,very impressed. I bought it specifically because I wanted a light drill and I am on the 18 volt platform ,if I wanted brute force I will use the heavier 996 . The 708 was never meant to match the 791 ,but It still punched well above it's weight.

    The Atomic is sufficient for the occasional home DIYer especially if you’re on a budget if you’re doing 3/4 major projects a month or are a serious handyman then yeah invest the money on the XR. I went with the Atomic because I fall in the former category.

    My dad has the XR line impact driver and Xr line Drill Driver. I bought the atomic drill driver and hammer drill combo with two 1.5 amp batteries, a charger and a touch system case for $150 at Home Depot. It doesn’t have the same power as the bigger dewalt and makitas and Milwaukee but I have the less fatigue from not having a heavy impact while at work.

I just really like the specs , built quality and feeling of the XR, never rock my drills or driver with a bigger battery than a 2 ah, or a 4ah max, so weight to me, feels the same almost, if i really want to go light i use my 12v.

    The atomic drill is really good for cabinets. Plastic chucks are nice because they are less likely to scratch the finished surfaces, which the chuck comes very close to very often. And it's ratcheting which is very nice.
    It's also lighter and every bit helps because you are very often holding it above your head. Same goes for the tiny starter batteries it comes with. It's real handy to have 3 or 4 of those things. They're fine when everything you're doing doesn't come close to challenging the motor.
    Being short is also very important when you are frequently predrilling things that need a right-angle drill. It may not be much but maybe it's one less time you need to bust out a special drill. The same goes for the hammer drill functionality. Maybe once a week I have to put 3 tapcons into something. It may not be the fastest hammer drill, but it is a lot faster than going back to the truck to get a real hammer drill that needs an extension cord and a chuck key.
    Puts out enough power for holesaws, and the lower rpms here are another unsuspected plus because it stops you from smoking out said saws.
    I really really like the worklight feature on my other drills and I wish this thing had it.

    • @ManCaverTools

      This may be true in a diy setting but not in a professional setting. I understand that this video is not largely aimed at professionals in the industry, but significant time differences do matter. Having to drop to speed 1 for one drill vs speed 2 for the other drill won’t make much of a difference if you’re building a planter box or installing a new light in your bathroom but it makes a big difference when you’re roughing out a whole house. Again that’s not exactly the scope of this video, but when these tools are your day in and day out, time is money. Where I personally draw the line is stepping outside of my current platform for more power.

    • @TheBootyWrangler
      @TheBootyWrangler 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The best (and what many professionals do) is to purchase multiple drills as the required use arises and eventually have options for any need. If you only go with one drill you will end up in a situation where whatever compromise your drill makes (size/weight, speed, torque, durability - no drill has everything all in one) will be detrimental to the job.

    • @TheBootyWrangler
      @TheBootyWrangler 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joshuasutton2163 I'd say the time saved is nominal overall even in professional settings. The reason you NEED the better drill in that situation is to preserve your sanity. Flipping a drill switch 2500 times a day is ANNOYING

    careful what size drill bits used in either of these drills. the manual actually warns max size bits to use. if too big it ruins the gear assembly. composite gears unlike the larger dewalt drill with metal gears. I ruined 2 compact XR hammer drills, one using an 1 1/4" paddle bit and the other mixing roof coating in a pail with mixing paddle. dont get me wrong, these are great drills when used correctly.

    It looks like the atomic did everything that the XR did (with the exception of maybe one test), and the main difference is that it takes a bit longer due to the stronger motor of the XR... the time difference is something that may not be a deal breaker for the homeowner/DIYer who does few jobs here and there around the house, but will make a big difference for a pro who's using this for hours daily... great video and I think I will go for the atomic given my use and taking advantage of its price and lightweight

    • @ManCaverTools
      @ManCaverTools  ปีที่แล้ว

      larger batteries allows you to use the power that is already there. the additional cells share the load more efficiently providing more power to the motor. ive already proven in hundreds of video across all battery platforms that a higher amp hour battery can do tougher tasks easier than a smaller ah can. That XR 791 is an awesome drill I am a huge fan of DeWalt over the years but I’m going to go ahead and say I am very disappointed in DeWalt’s new line of compact drills and compact Hammer drills they are all underpowered and DeWalts impacts are just terrible including the aging dcf887 that wasn’t very good to begin with I use a Ridgid impact in place of the dcf887 I hope one day DeWalt can give us a decent impact tool and nice review on these two drills 👍

Since hearing all this bullshit about lack of power ,I did my own tests and put a half blunt 600 x 16mm wood auger on it ,in first gear it drove it into seasoned Aussie hardwood full depth not even sweating then I put a 100mm batten screw and in SECOND gear it drove it into 100mm seasoned pine and pulled it out time after time .Wtf more could you ask for from a compact light weight drill ?????

      @@interman7715 I have both. I install 30-50ft. Guyed Telescoping poles on roofs ranging from small trailers to multistory mansions. I thought I'd enjoy the lightweight of the atomic more since I'm constantly full monkey up there. Then received a 791 in a kit with 887 impact for free from Christmas giveaway. I honestly could never go back. The durability on the XR is miles more. Drops and chuck scratches are a non issue. It took me like 3 days to scratch the chuck housing on the atomic. The motor on the atomic also struggles under many more situations. This indicates to me that there is extra wear on the motor and gearbox as well.
      I also have an 850(baby impact), 885 brushed impact, 809 brushed drill, forgot the model brushless framing nailer. I LOVE DeWalt. The atomic simply isn't there when compared to the rest of their lineup. If you work with your hands and arms a lot the 791 has nearly 0 fatigue. Before I had my own tools I came from hand-me-down 18v dewalts from my dad so after using those every single drill feels similar in weight.
      That nailgun is a different story using it is akin to lifting lady freeweights

    Speed 2 is High speed and Low torque
    The clutch number ( on the ring ) is used to control the rotational speed ?
    #1 is the slowest and #15 is the highest speed. ??
    The symbol "drill bit " on the ring, when set it operates INDEPENDENT of the clutch, and run at full speed (highest one) ??

    • @ManCaverTools

      the clutch is for torque control. it helps you set in screws to a certain depth so it will automatically stop. the high the clutch setting the deeper the screw will go in. but you can can find the right clutch setting for a certain sized screw you can drive it in to the correct depth in one shot every time for the same sized screw

And it did it for $150.00 less than the XR. Smile every time I watch one of these tests and the guy says the XR is far superior! lol. Exactly and the 709 or Atomic as you call it in the states is shorter and lighter, I'll take that any and every day rather than a couple of seconds quicker and 541 grams heavier..... that weight difference is definitely noticeable when up a ladder in an awkward position etc and in first gear the atomic 709 is 26nm VS 796 at 27nm and in second gear the difference between then.is 70nm with the 796 and 65nm with the atomic 709. Really not much between them.
