Just got a sachtler used from Adorama, I'm never looking back. I also own a cartoni and I love it.. but the sachtler seems much better with it's design and ease of use features. The one thing the cartoni has over the sachtler though is it's quick draw strap, allowing you to pull on it from the top and all the legs come together. It's great!
Amazing video, although i dont really agree on the 100mm minimum. 75mm seems plenty enough for many cinemacams like fx6, c70, red komodo. For bigger ones like arris, or bigger reds id agree! Ive got my fx6 fully rigged out with vmount and 75mm works amazing!
For the smaller ones definitely, but theres also 150mm bowls. I think its smart to settle with the middle point at 100! That way you future proof as well as have something good for right now
@@Minhute I thought that but why does it list almost similar payload ? and I thought the aktiv 10 has a few better pan and tilt abilities being it’s a 100mm head
Always amazed by the rigs people put into a photography tripod. I used to work at a tv station and they were throwing out a Cartoni carbon fiber tripod with a 100mm bowl and a Vinten fluid head because they had a few minor issues. I took it home and it's been amazing although way overkill for me so far. Both companies sent me the parts I needed to refurbish the tripod and head to like new.
@@Minhute definitely worth the investment. I got lucky. Right place, right time. I brought so much stuff home they were tossing out I thought my wife was gonna divorce me. Even got a 32 channel mixing board.
You are scaring me out of the 75mm size. I've been eyeing this system. I dont need the 100mm yet, but it would allow me to rent larger cameras. I have the R5 and the C70.
Hey David. Thanks for making this video. Looks great and edited well. Also congratulations on your purchase. I'm debating whether or not to get the Aktiv8 due to two concerns: my main concern is whether or not you can carry the sticks on your shoulder with the camera mounted (so camera is hanging behind your head and the part of the tripod with the handle is on one shoulder); lesser concern is whether you can lift the system by the camera as opposed to camera and tripod. Seems like that wouldn't be an issue, but you never know. I'm in the doc world and these two actions are necessary sometimes when moving with subjects to set up the next shot quickly. Any insight would be much appreciated because I can't find this info anywhere 🙏 I should add that I have the Flowtech 75 legs.
Hi David, Congrats. I was going to get the Sachlter AKTIV8 and the Flowtech 75 but decided to wait for some deals for this upcoming holiday. Would be useful how to see it performs in extreme hot and cold weather.
Daaaaamn. My boy just bought one too and now i see why… thanks for the info and such an amazing video, looks like a movie. What’s the song playing in the background?
Man crazy enough i was thinking about upgrading my 502 to another manfrotto one. Sachtler has always been on the back of my mind but the price always turned me away lol. BUT they are sooooo good🤧😭😭😭
Could you please explain to me ? What is the exactly 7 drags settings for ? I do own fsb8 ( 5 drags settings ) my camera weight is around 5kg. Will the 7 drags settings make my panning and tilting smoother for my 5kg gear ? Or 7 drags settings only for heavier cameras ?
It will make it smoother regardless of your camera weight! It has to do with the resistance of your fluid head more than your camera weight. A 7 drag has 2 more resistance levels than a 5 drag. So it’ll be a bit more stiff against your push!
@@Minhute Thank you so much for your reply and advice. Because I’m filming fast moving jets and I’ve thought that 7 drags settings will make my panning smoother. I did went to shop yesterday in London but they didn’t let me to tested new head. They didn’t want to unpack it. I’m really don’t know how to test new fluid head. Perhaps they lost a customer yesterday
The only thing I can think of is maybe rent one out for a shoot and see how it goes! That or find someone who might be willing to tag along or lend you one. The pan will definitely be smoother, but you would have to use lots of force to track a super fast moving object, maybe 7 might be too stiff? Unsure your frame and speed exactly so hard to say without seeing haha
Nice video! 75mm is plenty for small cine camera like the Alexa Mini though, even though you have more margin with the 100mm! Was thinking of getting the Flowtech 75 MS with the ACE XL head but you didn't recommend it, do you mind telling why exactly, I've notice that it's not built as well as the FSB and Aktiv line but I can get the combo for 1500€ which is pretty nice!
While 75mm is fine for a camera body alone, once you start rigging lenses monitors wireless focuses etc. it gets way past a 75mm payload. The Ace XL just isn’t up to par with a lot. I considered it at first as well and it just wasn’t good, you’re better off getting some other cheaper 75mm head with good legs.
Would highly disagree to combine an ARRI Mini with a 75mm bowl. It just isn’t safe. The provided payload capacity is measured from a specific height above the center of the fluidheads pivot point. I image if you use a mini you are using at least some 15mm LWS rods resulting in a rig with a high center of gravity and a almost unusable drag system (in a professional environment). As a owner/user of a FSB 8 (75mm) and a O’Connor 2560 (150mm) I honestly have to say that 75mm is nice for a compact build with next to no accessories (FX9, C300 and smaller) but 100mm is the best compromise
It makes all the difference in the world from drag levels which is resistance in the motion to make sure your shots are steady. To payload of what cameras you can use, powerful legs, detachable parts and sturdiness for the safety of your gear. And I trust that it will last me forever!

for sure
a Satchler 75 is more than enough and easy to move around If you have an fx6 or similar a 75 ativ 8 is amazing zero issues with weight
For sure!
Very good summary of that Sachtler system. I was researching different tripods and this is one has all the details I needed to know about!
Thanks so much! So glad I could help you!!!
Hey thats us !!
OMGYAA
What’s the difference with the aktiv10 vs the aktiv8 head ? Is their more pan and tilt options with the aktiv10?
The aktiv8 is a 75mm bowl so the payload is less.
