mehn, this is crazy,i recently started considering going back to nursing school cos of job security .i feel it's because of content creator, they made tech look so attractive now a lot of people are into it now
So I got the tech job, full time work from home developer, transitioned out of IT Support. The effort getting to this stage, I'm now burnt out, even starting a blank project seems like climbing a mountain.
What kind of IT support work were you doing before? I noticed that SWE roles are becoming hard to come by but I noticed alot of openings for Customer Support Engineers or Technical Support Engineer roles. I know they are not SWE roles because CSE/TSEs are more customer facing but it's just a trend I been noticing. I know those roles dont pay as much as SWEs but they are a great way to get your foot in the industry.
you might need to switch out your cadence or experiment with a bunch of new patterns, get up walk, drink plenty of water, sleep as often as you can, go the gym, start a physical hobby if you can etc...
@@DiamondFlame45 Correct, it is good to start from such a position, my personal recommendation is : 1) Linux administrator / linux engineer , in which you should use any opportunity (take initiative on your own, do not wait for anyone to ask you) to prepare bash shell scripts or python scripts for automating stuff 2) Software support specialist, in which you will not be a programmer, but you will learn the software product very well, become an expert user of it, to be able to assist the customers.users, and also to report bugs, or do some testing in the new release before it gets into production. You will have the chance to communicate with developers, follow along with the release cycles, and also communicate with the customers/users. Preferably, if possible, choose a software product that is written in a language that you are interested to become a developer later.
I'm a senior PM who left my big tech job to take a career break (for motherhood) back in February. I've been back in the job market since July and it's been tough!! Any advice or words of encouragement?
@samanthalacerna4127 to be honest, there will be bad days. Mental health wise, you can't avoid them, im afraid. All you need to keep thinking about is if your savings are enough to keep you secure until you get a new job, if not, reach out to friends and family for help on a place to stay etc. And then focus on job searching until you find a job. It may be a few months, a year or two years. Just know there will always be jobs, and you will eventually find one.
@GuestTH-camUser Stop projecting. Just because you are afraid to quit a job to live your life does not mean everyone is like you. People get laid off every day. Job security does not exist, so many people have to return to job searching anyway so you need to cut it out.
As crazy as it sounds....this video helped me find some peace today. The job im at now I absolutely hate, to the point its starting to take over my personal life. Im only in my 30s and its crazy to live like this. However after the holidays im leaving. I don't want to live like this anymore. I was scared to find another job, to start over but I not scared anymore 😊.
you are such an inspiration! 🤩 Being so organized and methodical in your search really shows how lucky any company will be to hire you. wishing you the best of luck. you got this!! 💪🏼
This video was on point and a very accurate description of the realities of landing a software engineering role at present. I was actually using some of the same resources to prepare for the future and wish you all the best!
Thank you so much for these job hunt videos! I'm in the process myself after cost reduction lay offs and you expressing the difficulties of the job search and frustration around it is so comforting, its nice to know I'm not alone in this! I really hope and expect you'll land something very soon! Thanks for sharing your schedule, I'm going to try to stick to something similar!
Ive been out of the field for a minute and then got a interview scheduled two weeks ahead power day style and thought that would be plenty of time to prepare. I was so wrong lol. You really do need at least a month or more, especially for system design which was a first for me. And yea don’t go cheap on mock interviews, they’re expensive but worth it for the level of prep.
As a data analyst, I decided to leave the field, also because my last two employers were so toxic and it burned me out. Now I found a job at a publisher ❤ the pay is much less, but I know I'll get so much more peace in return.
This is such a good video! As someone who is looking to job hop in the next few months, I followed all these tips and the sites are really helpful so far to find stuff alongside the scheduling and resources to learn. One thing I found kinda foreign is now more jobs than when I was a recent grad are wanting cover letters more. Do you have any tips on how to structure some for jobs (like a certain layout to go off of)?
Yeah. Crazy we have to spend months preparing for the interviews to get the job lol. I’m starting month 4 and feel like I need more time. Hopefully it all clicks at the end of the month!

The US job market seems bizarre... On average, I find something new within 2-3 months. It can take longer, when I start looking around the summer holidays for example, but less dramatic than I read about in the comments here. Also, the application process is easier here. On average (again), most applications here have 1 or 2 stages. The 2nd stage usually being a "talk" with a more technically inclined individual. On the rare (yes, rare) occasions you have to pass a test, the questions revolve around the technology stack used there. They would - for example - ask you to implement something simple using LINQ or EF, ask you to explain some technological concepts (Design Patterns, for example), or have you evaluate/debug a code example. Things like data structures... I have never been asked about those. Most companies don't have the time or staff to execute and follow up on the extensive testing I heard about here. So whatever tests you get, it's of the variety they can quickly run through between lunch and their first toilet break, for example. There are exceptions, of course; some companies have 3 or 4 stages. However, that often costs them since it discourages people from applying for positions there. And those who apply tend to find something else before arriving in the final round.

For some reason, I imagined I would go directly to each company’s website to apply. I’ll probably do that, but I’m wondering how much it matters, if at all.
Hi Bukola, I've been following your journey for a while and I have thoughts. You have strong experience building products that are in market, so maybe it's time to look at more senior roles in management. You would make a great team/ project lead or owner. Is that a direction you've considered?
Hey really happy I stumbled upon your content! And your advice is really helpful! If you feel comfortable we can also do job search/interview prep/mock together haha I am also in NYC
How do you manage all of this without burning out? I know that the System Design interview has caveats but do you think that there is a positive because it forces you to learn and be on top of System Design techniques?
Girl! I am employed but I plan to apply to a new role soon unless I get a promotion because I am definitely underpaid in my current role lol Do you think it is easier to get a job when you are employed? Or do you think this current market is crazy? I experienced a lay off back in June 2022 but I was able to land my current role in Jan 2023.
Let me give you an idea of how crazy things are now. When I started out in 2007, I sent out 5 CVs to game development companies (with no professional experience) and started my job within the month. I had two rounds of interviews and a final meeting with the manager to negotiate my salary. The technical test was a simple set of questions about programming and C++. The programming test was to write an algorithm to reverse a string. Now, this was a "junior" role, yet what I was responsible for in my first few months was more complex than every job I've had since - combined! And I'm not exaggerating. I built the graphics engine, which utilized the Nintendo DS hardware to the max. I made an uber flexible object oriented GUI library that managed loads from the cartridge with buffering, as well as an immediate mode GUI that could be used for overlays without requiring any additional RAM to load graphics from the cartridge. The menu system was intuitive, with a much better system for navigating GUI elements with the d-pad than most games (I designed it to work like navigating files on Windows with the keyboard). I had a nice system for streaming text (as you have in many RPGs), as well as having a unified system for rendering the font in any graphics mode (in fact, it could even render to sprites of any given size). I built my own tools to convert bitmap graphics to the GBA format (with dithering so that it didn't suffer from 'banding'). Plus the game code itself. In the next 6 months I'd build a scripting system with a virtual machine, plus a pipeline to accept game scripts from creative teams (and some interesting game modes). Yet the interview process was so much simpler. Something has gone terribly wrong in this industry.
i have a question, sorry if this is like a old question but am a junior. why people need to give you referral for a job for example on linkedin if they dont know you in the work or as a collegue
I thought it was just me. I been getting close to second and final rounds but i feel like alot of employees are looking for "the perfect person" which doesnt exist or dont know who they want. Some jobs I see are even still open
Congratulations on getting interviews! I wanted to ask, do you have any tips or tricks for getting an interview? I am an undergrad about to graduate college with a major in CS and it's very difficult for me to even get interviews. Please let me know what advice you can offer to help get interviewed.
At some point, spending 3-4-6 months on the interview process is unsustainable. And if an ex-Google employee is struggling what chance do the 99% have?
At this point. It is just not worth it. It like every 8 months to one year ALOT of devs have to find jobs. With the introduction of generative AI, junior and mid level software positions will no longer exist. Companies are going to make themselves more efficient by cutting cost (layoffs and partnering with AI companies)
Hi Bukola! Would you be willing to share your study resources? They look great from what you showed in the video, but I understand if it's not something you want to share.
The tech golden years are over. Tesla just laid off 14000 employees. Good luck out there but there are so many people looking for work in this field. It seems like it's an employers market these days.
Welcome back, but why not try to start a business instead wasting time on these job applications that require you to do stuff you don’t get paid for? These tests etc take lots of time . That time is better used for building a biz
You don't know what you are talking about. Do you know how hard it is to start a business and it pay you the same as what you were getting from your 9-5? Within a year, 90% of all businesses fail. There's a reason why very few people do well in business. It's because it's fucking hard. You have to put years into building the product, then you have to try and get huge funding, then you have to convince people to buy your product, which is one of the hardest things to do. Unless you have had many years running a business, you should be quiet. Think before you speak.
I hope she doesn't regret it. I'm sure she learned a lot. In the end, Bukola will land a great position, because it is clear that is what she is focussed on, and we tend to get what we work towards.
@ what I don’t understand is how one can leave and then want to come back especially from Google. I did see your videos from that period. Using this as lessons for us also.
sometimes it seems like you quit your job just so you can make another 'job hunting' video then eventually make another day in the life video at your new job,
i think you've been blacklisted. getting jobs, quitting after a few months, and doing again and again while on TH-cam isn't what companies are looking for.

❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I'm only stunned by your effort and professionalism. I'll be damned if you don't land another great job!
thank you so much!! 🙌🏿
I missed you
Do you regret leaving your last job?
Something I asked myself as well, people be to nonchalant about quitting good jobs thinking jobs are just lining up . ☠️
nope
Formation its 2500$ monthly fee 😢
yes pricey that's why I recommended cheaper options that are also really good!
I hope you're applying to Law School or med school.
Why did you post that comment?
@@denisenoles3159 because those jobs are very secure bozo!
Do you regret taking your sabbatical?
I hope she doesn't regret it. I'm sure she learned a lot. In the end, Bukola will land a great position, because it is clear that is what she is focussed on, and we tend to get what we work towards.
Holy shit 2.5k a month!
????
If you haven’t landed a job…. There’s no hope for the rest of us 😂
don’t say that! we can do it!
Lol on God 😂
Right if a tech TH-cam can’t get a job, we screwed
Getting a high-paying tech job in a high-demand software engineering market is like being an investment expert during a market upswing.
Damn!! Them cakes ?!?👀🥞
You look just like a woman I used to love the world is remarkable I tell ya.
4 min ad in 12 min video is peak capitalism!
the sponsorship is one minute! and how do you expect creators to make money so they can continue to create videos
maybe you should've stayed in google, no?
no
@ what I don’t understand is how one can leave and then want to come back especially from Google. I did see your videos from that period. Using this as lessons for us also.
@@alan713812 Life must go on. There are other companies, other experiences and challenges. Google is not the end all be all
sometimes it seems like you quit your job just so you can make another 'job hunting' video then eventually make another day in the life video at your new job,
lol ok 🙄 believe whatever you want to believe
i think you've been blacklisted. getting jobs, quitting after a few months, and doing again and again while on TH-cam isn't what companies are looking for.
i don't think that's the case. the entire market has seen a shift!
@@Bukola1 You worked at Google, right? You shouldn't be struggling like the rest of us.
Not sure where you got that impression. From Bukola’s website, you can see she has had 2 jobs with 3 and 2 years of tenure which seems pretty normal.
@@fritzdeuces She is going to land another great/high salaried position, because she has everything necessary to do so.
@@SummersJourney-d5d Having google on your resume should be enough. Does she have to leetcode to hell like the rest of us?
Serious question...but why do female TH-camrs ALWAYS say: "Hi, welcome back to my channel!"
Every single channel owned by a women starts out the same way.
Whats up with that? 😂
Why does it matter?
????
I don’t know what seems to be the problem
