Hi my name is Robin and I'm no different than you. A few years ago I started learning salsa. After struggling for a while I found some great mentors and the rest is history. This man speaks the truth! Subscribed! Moves are more important than patterns. Trying to remember long patterns will not help you with improvisations either. Remember friends: WORDS BEFORE SENTENCES! Really appreciated the tips. So many schools focus on teaching patterns, that I too got stuck in the never ending game of trying to remember the patterns. I'm changing my approach to focus on remembering the moves and trying them in random order.

Salsa is not just step. You teach people How to dance. Been teaching salsa, Ballroom and competing. But I realized that dancing is not just steps. We need to learn how to dance. Memorizing patterns is a way to improves ones vocabulary but in essence We need to understand everything not just steps. Anyway, your explanation is fluid and informative. Keep it up bro. So glad I found this video . I am learning and realize that its extremely difficult to pick up certain moves in social dancing because I have no clue what they are
It's definitely a process. I think, as a follow, learning each individual move can really help because all the leads are doing is stringing together individual moves. So once you get to know each move on it's own and then learn some variations of it you begin to calibrate your understanding and ability to react appropriately. Thanks for watching! -Robin
The best instructors are really the ones who aren’t the greatest dancers, because they are more into instruction rather than the compassion and freedom of dance for the girl expressing. (Go with the flow don’t make it hard on her or where she is worried of not making it on the mans lead, you can see that she is only following the mans instruction but not really enjoying the dance or music.
Remember music pieces fit the woman of your choice so make it like it’s the best where she is enjoying it on her own behalf.
She may reward you with what she can do🦋

What you say is really true. I am just a beginner who has started dancing only since last autumn. And when our class teachers ( a pair) showed us 2 combos suddenly in the last week of December, I went into a panic and could not understand at all how they were working and had to memorize all their patterns as they are with much difficulty, feeling desperate wondering how many complicated whole patterns of this sort should be " memorized " to go ahead... At home I made lots of exercises repeatedly for hours and hours every day in order to catch up with the lessons and watching many videos of similar styles on TH-cam by different online teachers and one day watching and practicing slightly different final closing of " enchufla", all of sudden I noticed that all these combos are composed of different basic moves. Since then I have started to try to break down many complicated figures on TH-cam videos and now I can see a bit more clearly how these combos are working even though I don't know well each move's name. As I said, I am just a beginner, however, this discovery could release me from the nightmare and pressure of memorizing all those whole patterns as they are and now I am more curious and eager to study & learn new figures and combos spontaneously. This small thing changed my whole view of dancing which seemed a completely different world far from me. And today your video convinced me more of it. I have been following your channel since the middle of January and every time I watch some video of yours, there is something important to learn because you give more importance to practical and useful suggestions and comments than to pure technical explanations to which all other online teachers dedicate the whole time. Thank you so much for your great teaching!

Very good content
These are very good tips! While watching the video I realized that I do have vocabulary to describe most of the moves that I see in bachata - moderna, sensual, dominicana, but in salsa, I barely can name things like turns, inside/outside, and crossbody. I can do more than that but that's what I have names for! That might be one of the things that stops me from becoming better in salsa. I don't want to go to a party and just wait for a bachata, when DJ is playing 4 salsas per 2 bachatas or even more salsa. Salsa is fun! It's just that I live in a smaller city and the bachata coach we have is absolutely amazing, he always makes sure we know what we are doing and know the names of moves, handholds, connections, he sends us new music and encourages to actively listen to it, recognizing core instruments and accents. There are more salsa coaches in my city but they don't do that! This is actually another problem I have and I wonder if you can help me. I have gotten used to bachata and can recognize a lot in a song, have a huge playlist of 200+ songs I listen to on repeat every day, because I just like it. But my salsa playlist is like 20 songs and I don't really listen to it very often. I do think salsa is actually a dance better fitted to my personality, but I end up dancing more bachata because 1. I am better at it, 2. I have a bchata oriented community 3. I listen to more bachata music. There are a lot of salsa parties in my city but most of the people there have learnt it somewhere else. What should I do?

I like your videos but i am very disapointed of one thing.
It's the inside turn of the lady.
Let us start at 3:07 with the first step on the left foot (it's the counted 5)
then the next step (the 6) with the right foot which passes the left foot, next the left foot (the 7) passes the right foot
and she ends with her back to her partner. Now she has to turn on the left foot and
almost at eight she makes a step backwards with the right foot which brings her more away from her partner.
This is not really an inside turn.
That what she is dancing is what they call a cowboy turn.
On six she is getting on the horse and with her next step on seven she is dismounting the horse.
This is bad technique, bad timing and it is looking bad.
An inside turn should be: pivot(5), pivot(6), pivot(7).
After the third pivot she would stay facing her partner and she should be able to move backward or foreward or sideward with her next step.
Nothing of that is possible here.
Hey thanks for watching. Unfortunately I'm really not following what you're saying about poor technique and a "cowboy" turn starting at 3:07. Her steps, timing and technique are all solid. If anything perhaps the echo of the music is throwing you off. Or perhaps you just have a different way of executing the inside turn where the follow is finished the turn by 1 and his facing the lead - which is a method many people teach - but patrick and scarlet don't use this method because they find it quite limiting. It's not to say that method is wrong, but when you have time it helps to use it, so scarlet walks forward on 1 to exit pivoting on her 2 to face patrick, so she's prepared for any turn he may want to give her. If she's already facing him by 1 and perfectly squared up, without any swivel, she is not prepared to turn. I'm not sure if this is what you were referring to, but it's the reason why they teach the exit of the inside turn as they do. Full breakdown available in our online course. And this (the cross body with a pivot for the lady) is the first step to get familiar with this technique.
If you are local in the unite states then you should ask Enio Cordoba and Terryl Jones for a lesson how this technique is used in salsa on 1.
