  • Ten years ago, David Wang pulled off a remarkable trick, installing Android on the first generation iPhone. Now Wang and his colleagues at cybersecurity startup Corellium are doing it again with the ostentatiously titled Project Sandcastle. And Forbes got an exclusive hands-on look at their Android for iPhone product ahead of its public release. The timing is sure to have Apple fanboys rubbernecking: Corellium is in the middle of being sued by Apple.

      I would say the same for Android. I would really like access to the root account on all my androids. And rooting a phone should not void your warranty. We have access to root on linux, why can't we have access to root on Android phones for advanced people.

    • @Pesthuf
      @Pesthuf 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. It is absolutely ridiculous how Google and their OEM or Apple remain the de-facto owners of the device. THEY have control of the root account and all the private keys while we are severely limited in what we can do.
      It shouldn't be easy to perform. The average person should DEFINITELY not do it. But there is no reason that isn't corperate greed to keep the customer from controlling the device they paid over a thousand dollars for.

      Viiziion Gaming No it’s not exactly that, that’s a myth and you can search it up and that’s coming from an iPhone user.. but yeah the performance will safer because A) it will always be unstable because creating drivers is way too difficult to perfect, especially with such a small team. B) Android and it’s apps are simply unoptimized to run on A10 chips so just from that you will see HUGE performance loss. In a perfect world it would take a big team YEARS to create fully capable drivers to iron out every single bug and EACH AND EVERY APP multiple updates and changes to their coding to make it capable of running on apples chips.

    As an Apple user and ex-fanboy, this project kind of highlights why you should not buy apple. No device is open or free to its users these days but Apple's are openly hostile. Given that apple is going backward in terms of design/ux/improvements now while the innovation lies with other companies, and is locking its devices down more and more, its' time to get out. It's good that projects like this exist, but it's sad that they need to. I, and everyone else, should be free to explore tech like I did as a child. I should not feel like a criminal just for wanting to experiment and understand the technology around me.

I see this as a hands-on preview for the future, but as of right now this doesn't help me get any of the Android features I'm looking for. Luckily this is just a beta, and the fact that the phone I have right now (iP7) is already this close to having a fully functional Android OS running as a dualboot is absolutely amazing!
