The metallic quality of your gloves is mind-blowing! Every time I have been trying it still looks like foam painted to look metallic. I have to keep experimenting, but I refuse to give up.
You're such a great teacher! You explain clearly and anticipate questions/exceptions without going on & on like some people do. Fantastic tutorial! Thank you so much!
I love this, always fun seeing someone tackling power armor! Especially Out of foam! I myself am working on a pepakura t60, life sized of course, you have done well sister, ad victoriam.
On of my favorite methods of achieving a weathered metal effect, specifically when working with metallic silver, is starting off with a darker color base. For instance metallic black or if its going to be really dingy, matt black. Then I go in with some dry brushing in the metallic silver over the top on the more raised/open areas (avoiding getting too much or the silver into the creases/recesses) I just build that in there and I've been able to achieve some really cool weathered metal textures. Of course if its too shiny and I need it more weathered I'll go in with black and brown acrylic where needed. Then I'll go in with either a gloss or matt clear varnish sealer, depending on how shiny/dull I want it, to seal and protect my paint job. I did that for a helmet my husband built recently and we got tons of compliments on the paint job (my husband was a tad jealous since he built the thing and all people wanted to talk about was the paint job an how they couldn't believe it wasn't real metal haha xD)
Great tutorial - I know this was made 8 years ago, but cosplay is timeless! Will use these hints to weather my Yara Greyjoy inspired armor, and then my Fallout 4 combat armor pieces. THANK YOU!
I'd love to see a video on how you go about sanding all of those edges and pieces so perfectly! I've been working on my first set of armor, and while it looks decent, I have all these sharp edges, and I don't want to ruin them by going about it wrong, lol. Great video, btw!!
A very well presented and easy to follow tutorial. Made more sense than most of the others I've seen and using minimal items and cheap at that! Cheers!
This is really helpful, especially for my current cosplay. I have to make two foam robotic arms and a helmet. I use walmart's paint which is 50¢-$3 which is cheap for matte, gloss, glow, or metallic.
I just did a super-rusty faux finish and I painted the whole thing rust first, then drybrushed on gunmetal, then some silver highlights. That way there's rust in all the crevices. Goes to show you can end up at the same place by starting backwards!
I found your vid looking for tutorials on weathering game minis. A lot of techniques carry over between that and what you are doing! Informative and you have great energy. I really enjoyed it! Subbed.
Hi! so good to have tutorials that are accessible : you speak correctly and enough slowly to be understood. Thanks! And you are great my god your costumes are so real Oo thanks again :)
I love these videos! I'm not a cosplayer myself, so it's really cool to see how those that are do these types of things. I binge-watched all your videos, and seeing the amount of work you (and other cosplayers) put into your cosplays is awesome. It kinda makes me want to try cosplaying ☺️☺️ but maybe I'll try something a bit simpler first^^
Thank you so much for making this video. Me and a few friends are starting a prop business (once we get good at it) and this video helped me out a ton!
Hi Zonbi. Is there a video in here somewhere that shows you in the finished T-60 armor? Would love to see how the whole power armor suit looks. Thx for all the inspiration!
I know I’m late to the party but I’m gonna make a t-51 replica and I wanted to know how you secured the stuff to yourself for wearing, I think i can make the parts easy enough but how do you get it like a harness or something?
so I'm coming over from paper, resin, and fiberglass and going for foam. how can I get like silver scratches and stuff on a piece that's painted like black or something. I'd usually put a base coat of silver on and then black over it and then sand the black off, but I don't think you could do that with foam.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! I have been trying to find a good way to make my Demon Hunter armor look just the way I wanted it to and this has been amazing! I found your video just in time for Blizzcon too! Are you going to be there this year?
This is a great tutorial and you’re so nice and easy to go along with! Just one question, what paint is that silver, to make the acrylic not stick to it so much? Also is the black acrylic paint, glossy or matte? X
Your power armor is so damn cool! I have been thinking to make my own next year. Any good tips for a hobbit who would look probably ridiculous is huge armor XD?
My first attempt at this failed so terribly. It pretty much didn't come off enough to show the base coat without scrubbing so hard that it also took off the base. Are you thinning your acrylic paint down at all prior to brushing on? I've got a video up to show what I mean (th-cam.com/video/hCf2CmSNkik/w-d-xo.htmlm34s). Any tips would be greatly appreciated. You and Evil Ted are rapidly becoming new personal heroes of mine.
Thank you! What will help you is, plasti-dipping and sealing your foam before painting. Applying acrylic straight to foam will give you some weird results. Hope that helps!
Does using this technique for weathering work with most hard surfaces? Currently making pepakura armour which will be fibreglassed and hardened etc. Thank you!
+ZonZonZonbi Thanks for the tip! I will be mixing the last layer in with gel coat, then applying another layer of gel coat on top which sort of self levels so hopefully it will smooth out. Thanks again, love the videos!
You use, colors that naturally the piece you are working on will get dirty with... mechanical stuff tends to use black due the grease and oil. Some metals under the rain use brown and reddis... rust colorss,... somthing that gets around mud use brown, You can also go for some patina colors in certain areas if you want to really go into detail.
@@TheVeiledArchive I’m thinking that natural weathering might be a bit difficult to control and unpredictable and I’m planning on trying to maintain structural integrity and artificial weathering might cause the same problem so painting damage is the only option
Loving these videos - lots of helpful tips, so thank you! I was wondering how durable the foam armour is though? Would it stand up to being worn at lots of conventions or does it often need a bit of fixing/touching up between?
I was actually really skeptical of foam at first. I used fiberglass/bondo before and thought that foam wouldn't hold up to convention wear and tear. I was wrong! Foam bends and needs minimal touching up between cons after you get used to making stufff with it.
How do you transport your armor/cosplay if your flying to another country where the con is at? do u like ship it there or can u just pack it in a really huge suitcase?
@ZonZonZonbi im trying to build a gears of War suit for next years long beach comic con. is there any tips you can give me on how to begin? its my 1st time doing this.
What color of wash, if any, would you recommend for something from an icy environment? I'm making a Hoth-inspired Star Wars datapad phone case for a friend. I just don't know the best way to age it. Thanks.
but seriously I actually am really excited to get into cosplaying, i've been putting this off for a couple years now, and saw this and was like, bruh she is LEGIIIIIIITTTT, (and also SUPER helpful!!) so thank you my dude.
But the shoulders are wrong, too angled and the jointed areas are far off. The chest piece isn't even bent or angled or any other details to make it look good, it's just one piece
Also oil paints are really good for weathering if the acrylic dries too quickly. A little more expensive than acrylic though I think. But from what I've seen acrylic works just as fine
Doing my first armor piece ever...fun as hell but need so soak up every tutorial I can find to make it good! This tutorial is great, thanks!

Plastidip should be paying you, lol, I've bought like 3 cans working on my cosplay because of your recommendation.

Wow! This really took my boots to another level!! Thanks for your help :)

Pro tip - put lotion on your hands and arms before painting. The paint that you get on your skin will come off much more easily!

You're so sweet thank you!
I know it was many years ago now, is there anywhere we can see the final product ?

hi! amazing cosplay! but how did you do the rust effect on the other pieces?
I show you how I do it it in this video. 9:43.
Do you have to seal it all up after you're done with the acrylics? If so what's a clear coat you use?
i love your videos but that song though.... i am dying internally.... i can't stand it
this method really worked for me thanks, i also somehow thought it was a good idea to lick the paint off my arm... i have no idea how i got to that

Question: Have you seen Tokyo Ghoul. If so could you do a build of Kaneki's Mask. But, don't do it if you don't want to.

Dude make whatever you want! It doesnt matter how tall you are.
Looking at her workspace makes me oddly happy
Is there any footage of you wearing the armour? searched a bit on youtube but cant find anything?
wait, was the silver plasti dip?
My first attempt at this failed so terribly. It pretty much didn't come off enough to show the base coat without scrubbing so hard that it also took off the base. Ok yeah, I hadn't sealed my test piece, I had only sprayed base coat, so I'll definitely give that a shot next time. Thanks for the tip!
Awsome tutorial and tips! Thank you, beautiful!
For a black armor build would you use brown or silver paint?
Water Forest Cosplay for weathering? I would use brown/gray!

Does using this technique for weathering work with most hard surfaces? Currently making pepakura armour which will be fibreglassed and hardened etc. Thank you!
I've found that it does yes. Just be sure to sand your fiberglass very well before weathering because this technique will highlight imperfections!

Quick question, do I use black to weather if my metals are gold?

You NEED do a cosplay from Jean Grey/Phoenix
This is amazing! Thank you.
If you can’t find plasti dip will this still work or is it needed

Are you left handed?
Where do you get your foam for the suit. I'm thinking of making one for comicon
Mr. Fritz That depends where you live. You can always buy it online, such as Ebay or Amazon, but I personally buy mine at Canadian tire.
This is amazing but I don’t know if the same technique will work on metal for a full metal power armour
Well if it’s metal you don’t have to do anything, it’s metal

I used a 75 gallon tub to fly mine to Boston. It was expensive!
so it goes with you on the same plane?

+Azhby Lopez If you look in my cosplay playlist I made a few videos on how I made my Gears armor. Good luck!
Awesome thank you. Do im mostly stuck on how to start the vest. Im gonna try and build tai kaliso
what brand of paint do you use

How many years you ask? 200,210,220,230,240 years!
Ps best power armor how to I've seen!!!!
Great video, thank you!
Would this work with an armor that is red ??
Yes it would! Use red spray paint/plastidip and you'll be golden.

Do you have templates of your armour pieces?
Nope sorry.
ZonZonZonbi how long did it take you to make the entire thing??
