    VERY IMPORTANT. Major omission: if you take out the platter there is a Line out/Phono Switch. It's actually a PRE-amped turntable and the Line - In setting makes it so you don't need a phono pre-amp. This is one reason why it's so heavy.

    The strobe lights are extremely useful, almost a necessity for your turntable. Without them, you would have almost no idea if your pitch is right or not, nor would you be able to correct the pitch.

      @TomEaglesHypnosis 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, that's basic to turntable use. Many turntables don't have the strobes, so it's as guess and you have to rely on your familiarity with your music as to whether your platter is spinning at the correct speed. On DD turntables with quartz speed control, you may not need a strobe. But all others (belt or DD) need one. Also worth noting that a straight tonearm isn't optimal for those who just listen to records and don't use them to make scratchy noise. But with the straight tonearm, you can buy a headshell that has an angle to it to more properly place an elliptical stylus in the grooves. Otherwise, get a conical stylus so you don't wreck your records with that straight tonearm (YMMV - depending on the stylus and counterweight settings).

    I had one of these form May 2011 up until April of this year. It was an ok turntable, but was ultimately designed for DJ scratching as opposed to everyday listening in my opinion. I replaced it with Rek-O-Kut Rondine 3 which is a great turntable and suits my needs more than the Str-880.

    Mannnnnnnn, I can not believe u said the strobe is "kinda useful" . That it is show u when the table is spin exactly at 33 1/3. Or slightly faster or slower.

      It seems he didn't know that it's a strobe and also he didn't know it's purpose. How it's that possible? Evrerybody with a limited knowledge about turntables knows what's a strobe and it's purpose.

    Hi, Can you please tell me how to ground these turntables ? I have a pair but I get interference as they are not grounded. I see the screw in the bottom where RCAs are coming out but not really accessible to ground. Can you please help ?

    Nice vid. Just came across a Str8-80 at a yard sale and it needs some love to get back to form. The tonearm lacks a headshell/stylus/cartridge. Is that a Discmaster V3 on yours? Trying to restore it.

    i had these early str8s with key correction and reverse play on mine but also i had up to 16 percent pitch and of course the 78 ,45, and 33.I wore mine out and took them to many places as at that time many clubs had either no decks or bad all in one cd systems or only cdjs .

  • @vyasra
    @vyasra 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    that helps yes! I am connecting tables with my analog mixer. The mixer has a screw to plug in ground cable but on the other side on turntable I am not able to reach the screw inside to plug in. I wonder if I have to unscrew the whole bottom piece and plug it in. Thank you for the help though. Have you plug in ground cable in yours ?

    My Stanton straight arm has the cartridge slightly angled, so how does that work with the cartridge you are using?

  • @jasoncslaughter
    @jasoncslaughter  13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @xargos Everyone seem to have an opinion on straight vs. curved tone arms, but the truth is these are all just that, opinions. The strobe is useful on some turntables, although on this one the speed LEDs are perfectly visible even in extreme low light conditions. As far as the cueing lever, most people with experience don't use one, unless you're a bit cack-handed...

  • @MrFlokos

    Some comments are correct in saying that the light and dots (strobe) are important but they don't really explain why. When a record is dead on 33 1/3 speed the dots do not move. When you use the pitch (speed) controls and turn the speed of the record higher, the dots will be moving in a clockwise direction and with just a glance, when you see the dots moving in a clockwise direction you will know that your speed is above 33 1/3 and by how much. The faster the dots move clockwise, the more speed you are over 33 1/3. When you are below 33 1/3 speed, the dots will be moving counterclockwise. With these dots, with just a glance you can tell if you have your record at artist intended speed, 33 1/3 in the examples I have been using, speeded up, or slowed down and by how much. Incredibly important whether you are or are not a dj. If you are going to mix two records with the exact BPM, tempo, key etc you would have to match the strobe speed dots of the record that is coming in, to the record that is already playing to get the record speeds correct to make and hold your mix. Very important tool for DJs.

  • @hifigeek009
    @hifigeek009 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I might give my Carl Cox signature a go on the straight arm, though I think that cartridge set - up you are using is for a curved arm. Best regards, hifigeek

  • @droppingpopcorn
    @droppingpopcorn 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The dots are useful on a turntable. It's for dj use when your adjusting your pitch. Instead of trying to figure out where your at you can just glance at the dots. Anyway, just thought you should know.

  • @jasoncslaughter
    @jasoncslaughter  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @vyasra Sorry, I had to divide the comment in two to fit. You also might want to try using the digital out, although in my experience the output level is really high, so you'll want to compensate by adjusting the input level on whatever you're connecting it to. If none of this seems to work, you can ground it by running a wire from any of the screws to any piece of metal that's touching the floor. Hope this helps!

  • @LIFEwithhughlurcott

    nice video, seems as if the guy is describing the turntable in a universe where DJs don't exist..he doesn't seem to realise the significance in the pitch fader, strobe light etc

    can you scratch with stanton str 80? i mean does it have a powerfull motor?

  • @jasoncslaughter
    @jasoncslaughter  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @vyasra You might want to check your connection first. It could be a problem with your phono input, or if you don't have a phono input, check your phono preamp (if you're not using a phono preamp, this is probably the issue).

  • @nickshouseofdisco8240
    @nickshouseofdisco8240 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Obviously you're not a DJ because that strobe light is very important it gives us DJs a way to set timing positions.
    It's obviously to much of a turntable for you. but no matter what you use it for either professional use or just everyday home use is perfect.
    And it will last practically forever. it's the second from the top of the line Stanton ST8-100.
    You got a fantastic deal on it.

      @@kazer4 Hey, friend. I checked eBay. Nothing for this model. There are no hinges or holes for hinges. How did you do yours? I'm sure there are other models from other companies that should fit. Did yours come with hinges or did you install and drilled holes? Or, are you using the two screws underneath the Stanton? Thanx for your help.

  • @jasoncslaughter
    @jasoncslaughter  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @hifigeek009 I was told at the time that it would work for a straight arm, but you may be correct. I'll have to look into it.

  • @xargos
    @xargos 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Straight tone arms typically don't have an angle as proper as that used on S-curved tonearms, this potentially causing additional wear and reduction in sound quality. The strobe has been around for quite some time and is very useful for ensuring that the speed is proper. The line in shows that you are stuck with the built-in preamp rather than having a choice of a preamp with a more accurate RIAA curve. Also, where is the cueing lever? Not what I would call a quality turntable..

      very true, but in case you do want to put your records on the computer, post a track on youtue or in your ipod, chances are the DAC in a sound card, receiver or even computer is better than the Stanton DAC.

    1:16 I don't see how a straight tone arm could sound good in every groove unless it's six feet long. The ones I've heard usually sound painfully distorted at the inner and outer grooves (but OK somewhere in the middle), something that might not be noticed in a really crowded, noisy club with half the guests doing lines and the other half giving or getting BJs, but I wouldn't want turntable like that in my house.
