Flying a Luscombe 8A from Seattle, WA to Anchorage, AK via the Cassiar Highway

  • Flying a Luscombe 8A from Seattle to Palmer, AK via the Cassiar Route. For those wondering, the thing strapped to one of the left struts is a can of bear spray since it is very dangerous to keep it inside the aircraft in case of accidental discharge. The rubber piece flapping around on the left cowling was noted and secured. Thanks for watching!
    Note: This was a non-commercial just-for-fun Part 91 flight that I paid expenses for. All flying associated with this video was conducted in strict observance and regard for FAA and Transport Canada Regulations in an airworthy aircraft and involved a great deal of preflight planning. Any low level or proximity flying depicted was performed by an experienced pilot in strict observance of 91.119 with constant regard for 91.13 and all other applicable regulations on public land. Any depicted flying close to clouds was legal under VFR in class G airspace. Do not attempt mountain or off-airport flying without proper knowledge and training.

    Did this trip some years ago in a Maule with the exception that from Prince George we went up the trench to Watson Lake. At Tok we crossed the road to Fast Eddies and had what we called the thousand dollar burger. So many of these sights are etched into my memory that I could tell pretty much exactly where the shots were taken. An epic trip that every pilot should do at least once.

      Been to fast eddies several times. Drove up there twice to hunt 40 mile air which is across the highway. Hunted n e of Fairbanks for 12 years. ,(, Circle city). Landed my cub in heavy.cross wind then celebrated the landing with a milk shake and burger at fast Eddie's. Fun!

    I have extensively researched a planned 8A traverse of Canada into Alaska via a stock Luscombe 8A. The only way we determined it could be done was with road landings and fuel stashed in the 8A luggage compartment or on the ground. This was calculated using an original 8A Luscombe with a fuselage tank, metal wings and 65 hp engine..

    Questions!
    1) About how much fuel did your Luscombe suck down one-way?
    2) What was the highest altitude you needed to avoid the mountains?
    3) How many days did this span one-way?
    Thanks for this cool vid! Looked like better scenery than when I drove it...

    • @chadsadventurechannel5477
      @chadsadventurechannel5477  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I kept careful track of fuel burn each leg but didn’t put all the data together - I estimate I burned 90-100 gallons of 100LL total. The highest I climbed was maybe 8000’ to get a good view of the Chugach range coming into Palmer. Most of the time I was between 3500-5500’ because most of the river valleys in BC and Yukon are pretty low elevation and wide. The trip took 3 whole days to complete but I didn’t start real early on the two last days. In the video I included some footage from the 4th day flying around Anchorage for fun. Thanks for watching.

      Thanks Christopher. I did carry 15 gallons of extra fuel inside the plane in portable containers to land and fill up with on two sections of the trip, mainly from Smithers to Watson Lake. This airplane can fly about 300 statute miles with reserve fuel. I really did not encounter any bad weather minus some turbulence and a few low clouds in the morning out of Smithers. It would be a much longer and harder trip without good weather!

  • @mannypuerta5086
    @mannypuerta5086 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    That’s a trip every pilot should make. A bit more challenging when the range of the aircraft is limited, though.
    When did you do this? I heard Dease Lake no longer has 100LL and the Supplement confirms it. I used to stop at Dease from Smithers or Burns Lake, but then we left the Cassiar just south of Dease, direct to Teslin Lake via the drainage, then via the Hwy to Whitehorse. Nav Canada told me about that shortcut one year when the weather at Watson Lake was iffy.
    Good exchange rate these days helps with the fuel costs, but you have to watch the bank’s credit card foreign transaction fees.

    • @chadsadventurechannel5477
      @chadsadventurechannel5477  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I did it September 8-10, 2022. You are correct that Dease Lake has no 100LL or ethanol free fuel available. I called ahead and also talked with the helicopter company owner at Dease Lake-he said they would like to get a 100LL self serve tank set up next year. What I had to do was carry 16 gallons of fuel (in addition to the 24 gallons total in my wing tanks) in bladders and a can inside the plane from Smithers and stop to fill up from bladders at Bob Quinn Lake (CBW4). Atlin, on the way up the drainage to Teslin Lake does have self serve fuel now and is not updated on the flight supplement last I checked. Watson Lake had self serve fuel when I was there.

    • @chadsadventurechannel5477
      @chadsadventurechannel5477  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Stroked C-85 gives it about 100 hp. Two 12 gallon wing tanks plus portable fuel containers inside with me to stop and fuel up with. Cruise speed is 90 mph around 4-5000’ making the comfortable range on the wing tanks about 300 statute miles.
