I can understand why we should know a, e, i, o, u as we need to put an if a word starts with these vowels, but regarding the Y, please can you say what is the main use of knowing that it is a vowel?

Isn't the real rule to use "an" before a vowel SOUND and "a" before a constant SOUND. Examples: An hour. A unique point of view.

You can only add "an" or "a" in a noun as what she mentioned at the video ,that noun is a person ,place,thing and animal.. so in that case you must know where to add the "an" and "a" .
