    The screw/nut combo on top of the steering box is designed to remove that slack. If you loosen the nut and then tighten the screw, you can adjust the play in the steering box play without replacing the entire box.
    I know this is old school repairs rather than today's replace it motif but it works and it isn't dangerous. It comes from the day where you expected to repair something rather than just throw parts at something.
    You're welcome.

    • @aaroncostello8812
      @aaroncostello8812 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah, but you can only adjust out so much wear and these worm gears tend to wear with the steering wheel on-center. If you adjust the screw too much and take the on-center slop out the steering will bind in turns and that is bad.
      This box needs to be replaced.

    • @Nostradamus1981
      @Nostradamus1981 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@aaroncostello8812 ive rebuilt these in my previous job and your are right on. Also having it too tight off centre can also stop the wheels from auto-centering which can also be bad when turning a corner.

      Use a beam torque wrench to verify preload on the steering gear. This is a good fix, by the way.
      It probably takes upwards of 250k miles to actually wear the gear to the point of requiring an actual replacement, which, by the way, may be of dubious "rebuild" quality.
      As an aside, I have 3 WJ, all with over 250k miles, all maintenance by me.

    Many have commented that you can adjust the nut at the top of the steering box to take out the slack. That's true but the wear is in the centre position with absolutely minimal wear heading towards left and right lock. If adjusted to compensate for wear in the centre, when turned, the steering really tightens up (well beyond reasonable) on both locks. That wear problem can only be fixed on a higher mileage vehicle by replacing the steering head. Each of the steering tie rod ends (plus the idler arm - though this specific vehicle does not have one) also need to be checked. All steering components tend to wear out together, or at minimum, all needs to be checked thoroughly. Retired mechanic in Land Down Under.

I was quoted £3000 for a new differential unit, and went to an independent, who didnt want to take it on, but in the end changed the pinion oil seal for £200, and totally fixed it. After I had insisted that I wanted to take the risk

    You might try to tighten up the worm gear on top of the gearbox. I recently went with a new steering gear box on my 2000 WJ 2WD 4.0 which made a big improvement after trying to adjust the worm gear to reduce the slop which helped a little... I bought it cheap last year with only 70k miles and since have replaced all the steering components. Solid front axles can be real tricky, especially if lifted. WJ's have the odd combination of uni-body construction with a solid front axle.

    • @helenault7452
      @helenault7452 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The adjustment on top is for the pitman shaft preload; if the pitman shaft isn't wobbly, that's not going to help. And if the pitman shaft *is* wobbly, it won't help for very long. On some really old vehicles, there was an adjustment for the sector backlash on the top cover, but this isn't one of them.

      Better customer satisfaction because the job is done now without having to return.
      Replacing things like egr components rather than trying to clean them is better for everyone but most of the time i suspect only the part sellers win by replacing rather than adjusting things. Also a customer will probably be more comfortable replacing things themselves more than doing an adjustment which might seem better to have experience to do. Replacing things degrades the value of a mechanic's knowledge.

    If the gear is not worn, the amount of slop will be consistent lock to lock and you can adjust it to remove the free play. If the gear is warn, slop will go away one direction and get progressively worse going the other direction indicating asymmetric wear on the gear set in which case, it's junk.

      Not on a stock Jeep. If you drive it with a wore out draglink it’s gonna wear the gear box prematurely. There’s adjustment to tighten the slip

    The best way to adjust the worm gear is to remove it from the vehicle IF it is not worn very bad. Go by the book instructions as you can tighten in up too much in the center and it CAN jam at the extreme travel turning right or left and it will NOT return to the center by itself. If it is too worn in the center, replace with a rebuilt or new steering gear. Don't buy a junk yard replacement. Your life can depend on this. Spend the money and stay alive.

  • @spaceflight1019

    Back in the day, that steering gearbox had an adjustment to remove excess steering wheel play. Check it out before replacing the box. That steering linkage setup is identical to the setup on a 1977 F150 I owned.
    With the steering wheel centered, you set the right wheel toe with the main sleeve. Then you set the left wheel toe with the left side sleeve. So easy a caveman could do it!

    • @BruceCoggins
      @BruceCoggins ปีที่แล้ว

      The drag link (the part with the loose collar in the video) runs from the steering box to the right steering knuckle and is for adjusting the steering wheel. The bar just below that (center link) is for setting the total toe. In this case, the toe adjustment is separate from the steering wheel adjustment.

  • @hedydd2
    @hedydd2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Is there no slack adjustment [backlash] screw on the very top of the steering box? Most recirculating ball steering boxes have such an adjustment to take up the free-play.
