Boerboel Breed Standard #6

  • In this 6th video in my series on the Boerboel Breed Standard, I (following lots of requests) demonstrate the application of the Breed Standard on the heads of 4 of my own dogs.
    Lots of viewers asked me to show on a physical dog what is correct and what not...... and many viewers were curious about my own dogs.
    I hope this video will satisfy the requests and show people who are new to the breed just what the character of a Boerboel should be like.
    I can handle, prod and push and open the mouths of all my dogs with the greatest of ease and there will never be one moment of aggression. I do not "practise" this with my dogs..... NO...... they are simply obedient, well-bred and well behaved Boerboels which meet the Breed standard.
    My ancestors, who all bred Boerboels for at least 3 generations before me, did not tolerate an aggressive or disobedient dog simply because it has commercial value or because it was bred by somebody important......and I do not tolerate it either.
    I dedicate this video to Authentic Mizpah Riana, the dog I nearly didn't have, and to all the joy she gave to me over her lifetime. Unfortunately Riana passed away a short while before this video was posted on TH-cam.

    Would love to see a video about Boerboel temperament (many breeders have their own interpretation of correct temperament). Would love to hear the truth from you.

    Soldiers, football players, dogs...it is the heart that counts. It is not the most important thing, it is the only thing. And it is the most difficult thing to assess. Frequently it is only under the most stressful conditions that a valiant heart makes its presence known. And when it does no one cares a whit about the shape of the nose.

    • @boerboelacademy
      @boerboelacademy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Boipelo, the dogs now look different because people want them to look different. The dogs should still be the same as they are true Boerboels. They are totally separate from the Africanis but are also mobile, working dogs.

    I've been in an debate with a few friends and they say the Boerboel is a long dog. I personally think the Boerboel is a compact dog. Could you kindly share some light that topic?

    • @boerboelacademy
      @boerboelacademy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The initial breed standard read that the dog should be 9 units high and 10 units long. That makes it a slightly elogated dog ...... that measurement however disappeared from the SABBS Breed Standard ..... and now some "appraised dogs" look like gaint sausage dogs.

    • @juanpieterse4075
      @juanpieterse4075 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      line breeding is when you select a dog from the litter to breed exept with the parent ...in breeding happens when a male breeds multiple generations

    My 6month pups head shape is similar but people always tell me he doesn't have a boerboel head because its not huge and over sized

    • @boerboelacademy
      @boerboelacademy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That is one of the biggest problems with "modern" Boerboels. Head size is over-emphasized and the dogs lost the balance between their body components.

    I have liver nose boerboel. She has a lot of faults in her. But her lips are the tightest iv ever seen! Both the top and bottom..Not even once have I seen her drole. And she has never done anything distractive in her life as a puppy. Very well behaved also.

    • @boerboelacademy
      @boerboelacademy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is possible to breed tight lips and people don't believe that that is the cause of drooling. Instead they say "Boerboels drool", which is not correct. Boerboels, bred with too much skin, drool because they can't keep the saliva in their mouths.

    Flys on the ears is an easy fix. Try Flys off or swat.

    • @boerboelacademy
      @boerboelacademy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In Mozambique we have a biting fly which are attracted by the flowers of the mango trees. They seem to love all these fly repellents. I have tried 95% of the commercial brands and heaps of home remedies. The two brands you mention are also not available here. All that seems to help for a little while is the sticky tar (Stockholm tar) that farmers use when they trim the horns of cattle. The rest are "fly food" over here..... our flies are really tough!!

    You can see the Rhodesian ridgeback that was bred into boerboels with the line down the back

    • @boerboelacademy
      @boerboelacademy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Dao Way, the Boerboel is a much older breed than the Rhodesian Ridgeback. What you often see on the Boerboels is a darker colour in the hair on the back, not a "ridge" of hair growing in a different direction such as the Ridgeback dogs have.

      @@boerboelacademyare they both not from around the 16th century?

    • @boerboelacademy
      @boerboelacademy  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@memeguyTM Most definitely not. The creation and development of the Rhodesian Ridgeback in the early 20th century is well documented in Dogs of Africa by Sean Michelle Hall. The Boerboel was not created by breeders and is a heritage breed of which it introduction to Africa dates back to to the 15th century.

      That is great. I however live on a farm in Mozambique and my dogs all live a farm dog's life. They are well looked after and receive tons of love but they live in an environment where ticks, fleas, snakes, biting flies, wild and farm animals, hippos and crocodiles are all realities. I am happy for your dog in its environment but my dogs are happy in theirs too.

    It seems that you have more of the hound type of Boerboels & there's nutin wrong wit that if that's ur preference....I just don't care for that type wit the long narrow shape mouth & narrow heads.... And it seems like alotta breeders are tryna get away from that....

    • @boerboelacademy

      The breed standard determines what we should breed..... and as long as any dog is within the set parameters, I have no problem with it.
