I love how much attention mangini is getting since becoming the drummer for Dream Theater. This dude has been under the radar for far too long, it's time for him to become a star.
As far as I know he drummed for a fairly successful 80s group called extreme so he already had stardom of some sort or other. There's another drummer named Dylan elise that has this same extraordinary gift and not nearly as known as he deserves to be
@@deanfowles3707 Oh he's definitely been famous for years, I mean playing with Steve Vai and stuff? Nuts. I'm just happy HE himself is going more viral now than ever, he's truly one of the greats. I had his instructional stuff back in the early 2000s.
I'm not a drum expert, but I believe he has taken the expression "go beat on your drums", to the EXTREMIST, NEXT LEVEL!!! WHAT AN ACCOMPLISHMENT!!! I LOVE IT!
My fav. Mangini solo is still the one of him playing with Extreme in 1995. He's a technical monster of course (and has groove that very few people give him credit for) but that 1995 solo just has so much raw power and showmanship haha!
That Rototom set solo?! Yeah, it showed how damn fast he was even then... and he got faster. I agree with some of the comments in that he is not the most musical drummer (in my opinion, too) and not my favorite soloist by far, BUT he is another level in terms of speed. I've come around a lot in my appreciation for his playing, and people are always posting how he's a great and humble guy. He can play any odd time or syncopation, and is a consummate technical drummer who can probably duplicate almost any classic drum solo. You mentioned his groove, and though he does get into some groove and beats, he abandons them too soon to go shred, much like Thomas Lang, who is somewhat similar. Lang is a monster too, and tremendously powerful, though I'd have to say that Mangini is even faster.
dude its just amazing the CONDITIONING he has. Like I play death metal drums and all that and the speed is always a constant battle to maintain, but he is just so effortless and smooth its like he is not even trying. All that crazy fast stuff is just good old fashion sitting down with a metronome and going RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL really slow and building it up but for the life of me I cannot understand how he gets to THOSE speeds. ALL HAIL!!
ADTOE drum parts were written by Petrucci, Mangini arrived in time for the recording. Wait for the album coming out next month to see Mangini true potential.
Odd-time signatures are based on a complete measure which is then prolonged or shortened by accents or an extra part of the original measure. Polyrhythms are feet playing one sort of rhythm like a double-kick pattern of for example three time 4 16th notes followed by 2 8th notes to have a complete 4/4 measure and then with the hands playing for example a steady 6/8 or 7/8 beat, which Mangini hardly (if ever) does. Cheers 'n beers, Nick
The funny thing is though that the fastest-sounding things which would be at the very beginning and in the end for instance, are the easiest ones to play - sound fast because it is but that's due to the helicopter-effect of alternating toms and heavy bass drum. But, naturally, the hand-crossing is insane, reguires a lot, a lot of muscle and muscle memory and knowing exactly where your instruments are. But yes I think we can agree that he's debatably the fastest one around :D
Mike is thinking, I'll do something really amazing. something that is very difficult to be repeated. And he succeeds. Mike is very fast and very well coordinated too. Mike is awesome, no doubt. He makes us think about how he could do that. But when I hear Mike playing drums, he does not seem to be thinking about creating a rhythm that sounds really nice. Simplicity is an achievement.
Not the best video to see the Technique ... but believe me.... He knows what he is doing!!! I have never seen a drummer like this, he makes fun of us ... he is the best ever!!
@storytellers82 so he is the Malmsteen of drums...he seems the most speedy drummer of all times (together with Buddy Rich) even if this means not so much to me...
@storytellers82 Yeah i know most of the original videos and known Mangini for many years before entering DT, but just had that impression of speeding up at some points. Indeed hes fucking amazing alien drummer.
When I learned that portnoy had left DT I was praying to god it wasn't true! When I heard that they would look for a new drummer I prayed it would be Mike Mangini. When I heard that he would audition for them I knew he was gonna be the next DT drummer. And I hope the permanent one. And by the way I made like 50 euros of a bet for Mike.... :D
@nazzare79 of course! but this is just a collage of hyper technical moments, just to give an idea of his monstrous technique. Then it is obvious that "drum" is much more than that. Take it as a funny video and awesome at the same time ... ;)
@issofunky but he IS an excellent drummer! He has great technique and he CAN play fast, in fact he broke the world record for fastest single strokes in a minute.
@nazzare79 I am a fan of this drummer from many years, when he was still little known. But among fans of drums has always been known as a monster of speed. Now that He has joined in Dream Theater, many people who do not know him, rightly, remain amazed when they see videos like this, thinking that there is some trick, but in reality it's all true. :)
MM is a monster drummer but MP started DT with JP & JM did unforgettable albums with the band. I think MM is a research endless technical genius in his own right while MP is a free rock fun no strings attached passionate don't care what others think kind of drummer.
I rarely see a drum video that TRULY humbles me. This is one of them.

@@deanfowles3707 OMG yeah Dylan Elise is a crazy good drummer, and his polyrhythm's are mental
Hi. He doesn't drum for them anymore. You're welcome.
I saw one of his drum solos live, he actually moves that fast.
I love Mike, great guy and amazing player!
My opinion, that Mike is the most technical and fastest drummer out there over all super amazing!

I like how he seems to genuinely surprise himself at the end of that solo.

machine mangini
EnigMike Machine
But this tape is interesting more than when he in DT.
with fast hands like that he could be one of the greatest death metal drummers ever.
WOW...simply just...WOW...I can't imagine doing this, fastest moment or not...JUST wow!
This dude would ROCK in a technical death metal band.
I love the solo from the Vai gig! In the full version he does this hilarious/amazing single handed drum rolls.
His talent is no joke!
ADTOE drum parts were written by Petrucci, Mangini arrived in time for the recording. Wait for the album coming out next month to see Mangini true potential.
Mike is like wine, more age even better!
I don't get all the negative comments. In this video, he's just showing off. With DT he play AWSOMELY!
Watching Mike Mangini drum like that raises my resting heart rate to exercising levels. Fuck me....this is some scary level drumming
Como chama esse primeira tecnica que ele usa intercalando toques nos pés e nas mãos??

He's a beast!
not fake, i saw them a few days ago, and Mangini was simply amazing and i can honestly agree that he is faster than light. He blew my mind
I need a smoke and a shower after this. Can't wait to hear how the new DT album sounds with him.
The man is AWESOME!
Fenomeno Mangini! :D
INCREÍBLE ! The Best.
Awesome!!
Crazy good job mike

nenissaK no it’s not easy at all. It’s the hardest thing he does. He puts a kick in betwee each Tom hit.
Just incredible

Simplicity is.... whatever. Listen to reggaeton.
1:17 When you twirl the Wii controller around really fast.
The metal Buddy Rich ....FOR REAL ! If Buddy played Metal he would be Mike Mangini
แม่จ้าววว ยังกะฟอเวิร์ดภาพ เร็วโคตร Awesome !!
@nazzare79 The video that starts at 1:17 is totally sped up. So is the one at 1:44. You can tell by how the cymbals react and his hair.
is amazing drummer
How can you tell one is more creative... That's subjective.
To all who think its sped up! If you practice six to ten hours per day yo uget this fast!
Respect Mangini!
Looking at it at x2 speed and trying not to die laughing in the process
So good 🤣🤣🤣
I love his face at 1:06, like he's using a lot of energy when that stuff is miles below his level. Shows he's dedicated.
Not the best video to see the Technique ... but believe me.... He knows what he is doing!!!
I have never seen a drummer like this, he makes fun of us ... he is the best ever!!
OOOHHHH!!!!!!MASTER>>>
He has got much better since 2011...
Uff, Number One!!
I know right, Mangini is a beast.
Yeah! You need to go on.
wow. incredible speed
if you told me,that 1:20,they sped up the video ,i would have believed you.that is nuts
If Mike was a car engine he would be revving about 50,000 rpm. This is super human stuff!
+fourthlayer Unbelievable :O
He would be a car that you reved the engine and the car didn't move and blew up.
@cpljones69 it's when he was playing with steve vai
@storytellers82 so he is the Malmsteen of drums...he seems the most speedy drummer of all times (together with Buddy Rich) even if this means not so much to me...
@nazzare79 No. You can find all the original videos here on youtube. Nothing was speeded up.
Yes. Search: "Mangini shanghai solo", first one on top.
To all those who say some of these clips are 'sped up'....they aren't.
At 1:34 he slightly hits the china cymbal to his left and I think its motion is quite normal @@nigelproctor
Ah yea there are

@@nigelproctor lol you were right, its speed up, obvious by looking at the hair, but who the fuck speeds up a clip that's already fast to begin with?
It's a video about how fast he is, what where you waiting for ?
Semplicemente Mostruoso!!!!!!
Actually yeah lol can I have one? I'm feeling pretty hungry, and a cookie would really hit the spot.
imagine replacing those drum stix with army knives .... he wud be a perfect human meat-mincer! :P
When you have two badass drummers like mike portnoy and mike mangini you don't need to go on ;]

There's no such thing as the world's fastest drummer. He just set the record for one grip.
my respect
Who needs a drum machine at this point

@Konjaraful I agree with you but if I may ask.. where is all this speed going to take you :) ?
@tommasotemporin Thank you too! I´ll listen to it

MIKE M. is like a freakin machine gun!!!!
Of all the fast guys around the kit, Mike, Dennis, Tony, etc. I still think Virgil is the fastest I've ever seen...you know other than me :-P

so fucking awesome ...

Just listen to "on the backs of Angels", he is also one of the moste accurate and thightest drummer ever.
@JBic420 Mangini is very musical. Sure he play super fast, but he can play very slow with a lot of emotion... :P
