    About the JTAG hardware, the USB/PCIe-to-LPT-to-JTAG usually don't work in Windows (works under Linux though, since Linux features an unified abstraction for every form of LPT port and do not allow raw hardware access,) but a direct USB-to-JTAG converter can work in most cases, although those are usually not that cheap as the LPT-to-JTAG ones.
    BusPirate by Dangerous Prototypes is a pretty good USB-to-lots-of-embedded-ports adapter and JTAG is among its supported port list. I don't have one though. More professional tools include U-Link, J-Link and USB Blaster, which are development tools for ARM platform or CPLD/FPGA, can also be used as a generic USB-to-JTAG adapter with supported software like OpenOCD. Last but not least if you have an Arduino or Teensy (or the like) you can create your own (or use someone else's open source code) USB to JTAG hardware.
    I had a bit of personal experience on using the USB Blaster (a JTAG tool for Altera CPLD and FPGA) in OpenOCD to debug Raspberry Pi (ARM-based) over JTAG. The similar can be done if the software supports whatever USB-to-JTAG adapter you have. OpenOCD can be a good starting point as it supports virtually everything.

    I have to give you proper credit for this one. Not many people will try to save an old router like that one. I use DD-WRT myself and have had decent luck with it. The only downside being that one time a flash failed. Being a more expensive router, I did JTAG it back to working condition much to the owner's surprise as he didn't ever expect it to work again. You see it was his lack of patients that bricked it in the first place. Fun stuff and good information.

    gotta love those little blue routers, i actually had a WRT54G back when they were new, it was used until the internet device count at my home was too high for it to handle and we ultimately had to get a new router, then not too long ago i picked two WRT54G routers up at goodwill's Buy The Pound store, one of them already had DD-WRT on it, i plan on installing DD-WRT on the other *edit* one was a v6 one was a v8 the v6 is the one that already had DD-WRT on it

    I know far less about this than you do, but it all makes sense. When you ran the JTAG utility it looked to me as if you were running it in DOS, do you need to run it in real DOS or can you just use a command prompt in Windows or another operating system?

    I wasn't all to worried of completely trashing it but at the time I figured this would be the hardest to do. I have done the "pin short" method on many things with varied results. That's why I attempted it. But I think I'll stick with JTAG and the such. Thank you for the reply.

    I remember JTAG flashing a v1.1 or 2.0 WRT54G in about 2006. Even then it was difficult because the parallel port was obsolete so it was hard to find a PC with one and the old software to install the JTAG parallel driver thingy didn't work on winXP and the community for it had been dead for a couple of years. In the end I swapped the driver file with a LPT printer's and restarted the "printer" driver.

    Legacy ports are indeed awesome.
    USB is fine for mass produced stuff, but it's pretty inaccessible to the home electronics hobbyist. Serial/parallel ports are simple and easy to work with, the project in this video is a good example. Also, many older high end accessories are available dirt cheap nowadays that use these ports.
    Shopping for my motherboard was slightly complicated by the legacy ports issue - can't take them for granted anymore. Luckily it wasn't too hard to find what I needed.

    The router you have did the same thing mine is. Blinking power and solid LAN and Internet. I had it opened and tried every method including the shorting method. But no luck so I am going to try this. I was getting ready to set it up as a pay-for-use AP. Then noticed it was bricked.

    I never knew such things were possible!
    I had a similar router that worked well for a few years, then just started constantly crashing. I ended up replacing it with a newer D-Link with wireless N. I think I still have the old Linksys somewhere, might be an interesting project to see if I can make it worth keeping, if for no other reason than just something to do.

    Just wondering Bill how the heck can you really break your router while using a JTAG program fiddling with the CPU/RAM etc? I thought that was only software and the worst it could do was delete your RAM how can it possibly wreck it couldn#t you just re-firmware the memory?

    Hi Bill, many thanks for explaining and sharing this de-bricking info, please help:
    I have a bricked linksys wrt54gl. I have purchased the cable and software from eBay, dismantled my router, soldered the pins, installed the software and driver as per the steps, attached the router to the correct type of port on a PC.
    Once I run the software though, a DOS type screen flashed up for about 1 second and then disappears. The firmware fails to load and the modem remains bricked. what am i missing?

    I have an old Linksys WRT54G, and I want to know if it's possible to use it as an access point (for a computer with an ethernet card but no wifi card) as opposed to an interface for a cable or DSL modem. Far as I can tell, it looks like I need to flash it with new firmware, but I'm not certain on many details. I would much appreciate some advice.

    cool, i have had a couple of different model's of linksys routers. on of which the factory firmware was so bad it would crash about once a week. i think i still have one somewhere. because i too hate to throw stuff away. i should get it out and flash it.
    i use a newer westell that works great with lots of features.(unlike some older westell's )

    Total Available 13.5 MB / 16.0 MB

    Nice, I need that lol... but do you know much about using tftp to flash a wrt54g? I hit the continue button to early on the GUI flash and bricked it... the dmz light still comes on so they say I should be able to tftp flash it. I pinged it and I get a response so this should work but I can not seem to get the tftp software to work... when I type in tftp commands into cmd it says that tftp is an invalid command etc... any tips?

    @uxwbill oh ok i use an netgear wpn824 as my wifi hotspot then i use wired from my smoothwall box to an gigabit hub that links on to all my computers. The only router i found that did the trick is smoothwall. its hard to find stuff that works well on 100mbits fiber optics.
    im ganna sell some of the older drives and do like you said add bigger ones. That would also work out grate :) and also more silent :)
    i would like to get hold of one wrt54gl and try that one out and see if it could work :)

In my main house I currently have a NETGEAR WNDR3700 wireless router form one of the wired ports I have it connected to a Cat5 that goes underground to out 700 sq ft guest house currently connected to a Blue-ray player with Netflix which makes it work much better then the week signal from the Netgear 3700. I want to be able to wire devices or use the wireless for ipad or laptops etc. so yes would like faster even know my DSL is only about 1.5 What do you think would work best for what I am trying to do? Add a Buffalo (if so which one), another Netgear 3700 or can the one I have be altered for longer range (if so how)??

      Cool have to do some Google searchs.
      Yeah mines the wrt54g version 6.
      Speaking of routers. Thanks to the never used dlink dir 628 I finally found I've built a closed( is that the right term for a network with no Internet access?) Linking my 4 inspiron laptops for funs and convenience of sharing two usb hard drives I use between them. One is veres files of mine and downloaded stuff, the other is my mp3s.
      I love the share point usb port on this thing, even works with a ac powered usb hub so can use multiple devices at same time. I've yet to overwhelm the ports bandwidth, believe I tried with my music hdd and a external dvd burner playing a music cd a usb hdd and a flash drive all accessing at same time.
      Only thing left is a KVM switch and the network switch I've ordered to get here. The switch is for expansion, I'd like to run a cable over to my bed so I can use the shareport from there.
      All machines are lan line all cat 5e cables.I rather not trust the wifi plus one machine no longer has a wifi card.
      I'd say for my first network I did a good job if I do say so my self lol.

      The WRT54G routers where were all of the alternative firmware began. Linksys initially utilized open source software components in the production of these routers and unlike a lot of other hardware vendors -- they actually complied with the General Public License and released the source code. It didn't take long for people to start modifying this code and adding features to their "little blue routers" that were normally available only on units costing hundreds or thousands of dollars.
      For whatever reason, Linksys eventually stopped taking kindly to this and switched the WRT54G versions 5 and higher to a proprietary operating system. To further frustrate efforts to run any other software on these routers, they cut down the ROM and RAM size so the old software wouldn't fit. The joke was ultimately on them -- their proprietary firmware ran out of memory, crashed all the time and it didn't take too long before the community driven efforts made their software small enough to fit these routers.
      If you look around you'll see reports that the WRT54Gv5 and up aren't really "recommended" for use with DD-WRT. The various other open-source firmware projects may not even support them any longer. However, it has been my experience that the V5/V6 series routers run just fine for the average Internet user with DD-WRT loaded. It's certainly saved a fair number of them from the trash can.
      Putting DD-WRT on the WRT54G routers is pretty easy and straightforward. Just make sure you've got plenty of time, and that you've downloaded and printed all of the materials you'll need *first*.
      Your USB storage devices would perform much better when attached to a computer: you're limited by not only the speed of fast Ethernet (~12.5 megabytes/second) but also by the overhead of USB and the limited resources of the router's processor. Indeed it is convenient, and if you're happy with it, that is the only thing that matters.
      A network that doesn't connect to the Internet could certainly be considered a "closed" network. It can also be referred to as a private network.

    • @JohnSmith-xq1pz
      @JohnSmith-xq1pz 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +uxwbill Huh I didn't know that about linksys. I wonder what changed their minds about the open source OS? money I have no doubt lol.
      Another reason to be unhappy about my desktops bad caps killing my plans to reuse it as a xp/7 machine for my old games and such. another idea would to turn it into a network storage device. but that's alright despite what my old man thinks I'll be hanging onto it for future repair and revival. Perhaps it'll end up a part of my little network yet.
      Private network sounds better doesn't it? ya I'm pretty happy with the usb drives as is. sure a better mbps speed would be nice, but it's handled my best efforts to overwhelm the thing thus far. I was just plugging them into whatever computer I was on up till now, but that doesn't work to well whan setting up on my bed. I've almost had a few drive oops a few times already.

    • @JohnSmith-xq1pz
      @JohnSmith-xq1pz 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +uxwbill Well I tried it and I broke it...
      No idea how I followed the instructions to the letter, but apawn flashing the new firmware boom the all the lights go out even the power light. No it wasn't the ac cord or outlet the laptop I used wax on the same outlet.
      All I know is the AC is good but nothing is lighting it up not even the power light. We were having a lot of trouble with that linksys router in the last days of use, so I can't help but wonder if something was wrong and or dieing on it and the flash finished the job. Any thought oh wise UXWBill?

    good save. the best bet is to load ddwrt for the model and revision number and forget about the memory. eventually the memory issues will be resolved in later versions.
    i turned my 40 dollar router into a three hundred dollar monster.!!!!

    I failed to upgrade to a newer version in DD-WRT on my Linksys Wap54g through Web Interface.
    The first upgrade from Linksys to DD-WRT through "TFTP client" was successful. Now again uploading DD-WRT through "TFTP client" but it was unsuccessful. I have hard reset the device but am confused in selecting the IP in "TFTP client". What IP should I use 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.245?
    I am getting Ping response at 192.168.1.25 at the same Static IP

    • @mcbernalijmb
      @mcbernalijmb 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joered9796 tienes que hacer reset del router antes de usar tftp client, resetea el router a su estado de fabrica y usas la direccion ip original por que si lo haces con una direccion ip distinta cuando ejecutes el tftp client al momento de iniciar la instalacion el programa trabajara con la busqueda de la ip de fabrica pero si tu dejaste una direccion distinta y accesaste a el por otra doreccion perdera comunicacion y quedara brikeado (blokeado)

    DD-WRT is the BEST firmware on the planet, I upgraded my piece of crap dlink a few months ago, unfortunately I parted with it recently due to a superior all-in-one device.

    why do routers need ram?

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Routers are special purpose computers that run programs to route Internet traffic and provide security features like a firewall. Those programs utilize RAM just as the ones on your computer do.
