Chretien ran surpluses from 1997 till he left office in 2003. During Chretien's leadership, Canadian government was on track to reduce the national debt from 63.8% of GDP in 1997 to 41% in 2003, and in 2008, the federal debt of Canada as percentage of GDP was 30%. 77tubuck That's pretty ironic with your statement. Chretien was not at all violent and had good judgement. That's why he made Canada stay out of the cluster fuck of a disaster that was the Iraq War and probably saved thousands of Canadians. While Harper accused Chretien of supporting Saddam Hussein. With that one decision it showed that Chretien was a good leader that protected Canadians. If you don't realize that him making staying out of Iraq was a good decision there is something wrong with you.

There was never any airs with Jean Chretien. What I loved most about him, was that he never was an american ass kisser. Unlike SpongeBob Harper.

I found this book on a bargain shelf... I want him to sign the 60% off sticker. He's the only politician I can think of who'd probably be amused by that.

I remember him saying he was going to decriminalize marijuana ... the crowd gasped .. and his response was "hey, dont start smoking right away"... (-_-) lol ... now that it has actually been legalized in Toronto ... I see him as a political pioneer .... down to earth guy who valued his wife's opinion over his own career .... in my mind he was the last real prime minister Canada ever had ... everyone after him was/is substitute teachers
