Yes DB is necessary.
Some organization may use SqlLite, Room or realm or other DB's. But f you know one of them, you can easily understand and integrate others.

Yes. Dependencies differ a bit depending on groovy or kotlin build gradle selection and not java. There is minor modification that you need if you select kotlin and dependency is in groovy
