The commentators didnt get Northugs strategy at all. He wanted to be second down that hill, to get more speed down hill. He was tricking the swede to take the first possision by getting the swede to think Northug was trying to attack and start his end sprint there. The commentators kept saying Northug was going to attack up that hill, but that was never his plan. They also said "he tried 800m before, but i didnt work", it was all part of his strategy. It just proves what you say, he is a master strategist, ten times better than the commentators :))
The Russians should have put Bessmertnykh on the first leg. The best classic skier on most teams teams is gonna ski the 2nd leg. Perhaps they felt that Vylegzhanin could attack and create a gap. He did attack, as we saw, and he did create significant gaps to the weaker teams, but due to snowfall, it didn't quite work out. Of course, Olsson was Olsson and he was the performer of the entire relay competition, but can you imagine an in form Olsson going against an in form Vylegzhanin? They could have done some serious damage on the field.
ha, i find it funny how they heap praise on Olsson for his incredible 2nd leg, yet forget that Manificat kept pace with him over their entire 10 kilometers...
They did acknowledge Manificat's performance. Manificat's leg was good but Olson's was great. Manificat could ski in the clean tracks while Olson had to open the way.
