Don't go lighting you supplements on fire though. Only the metallic form of magnesium burns bright. The magnesium salts contained in supplements are already fully oxidized so the only thing burning would probably be the pill's coating, and I'm not sure that would be a pleasant experience. PS: a magnesium flame very bright and even produces UV light so don't look straight into it, if you do manage to find elemental magnesium.

For me the worst thing about getting my cast off after 10 weeks was not the hairy legs or the smell but the part where the orthopaedic specialist told me to stand up on my leg. It was like fire through my heel and up my shin. He described it as my nerves waking up again. Luckily my nerves are morning people and that sensation passed pretty quickly. Oh and I was lucky that my cast didn't itch too much when it was on. However when it came off it was like my skin could finally breathe and that't when the itching commenced. I scratched my leg raw on one part. Try not to do that.

It’s so true you think you’ll have all this time now but you spend it watching Netflix or sleeping cause it’s so painful! the boot is honestly so much better Hazel, and to get the cast off is just a bit of vibration and it doesn't cut you or hurt or anything. I was afraid too but it was pretty chill.
a mini cast coming off what to expect (at least from my past experiences): 1) weirdly pale skin and dark hair growth in the area 2) loss of muscle mass/tone (your leg will probably be noticeably thinner looking than the other - normal!) 3) weakness in the limb, and soreness during and after use (an ache, not so bad for me; really bad for some) 4) you'll be scared to use it for a bit, then you'll feel invincible; you are not. hope that helps :)
Having flashbacks to my experiences - tried to go jogging a week after taking off my moon boot and have regretted few things more than that decision while 3km from home and limping. luckily my friend was with me!

Good luck and wishing you a speedy recovery! I broke my leg a few years ago, and I don't remember having any issues with the cast removal. I stayed on crutches for a while though, as I gradually pit more and more weight on it. The only issue I has was I get really dry skin, and I'll leave you to imaging what 6 weeks without moisturizer does!
I tore my ankle ligaments and needed a cast, and it was horrific, so I get where you’re coming from! It was in winter and I had to walk to school every day. On crutches. On icy pavement. With a men’s sock over my foot so my toes wouldn’t freeze. I actually cried from frustration on the way to school multiple times. Yep. Anyway, getting the cast off is totally fine! Be ready for a weirdly pale and hairy leg, and also it looked thinner than my other leg at first? But take it slow for a while and you’ll be fine! Also, it’s great to see you making videos again and I’m excited to read the book 💖
About 6 years ago I had my leg in a cast for about a month (long story) and I’ve also had my arm in a cast for 3 weeks (2 separate occasions, another long story). Let me tell you, the sensation of getting a cast off is HEAVENLY. The feeling of fresh air hit you leg again after having it wrapped up for so long is wonderful, the only thing I would caution you about is what your foot might look like. Since you haven’t been putting any weight on it your leg is going to look small and your skin is going to look off and that can be a little unsettling at first. As for learning how to walk again, the best advice I got is to sit at the edge of a pool with your feet in the water and slowly rotate the ankle you broke. Honestly swimming did wonders for me as I was getting movement back because the water felt nice and the fluid movement helped get strength back in my ankle. I would also pace in my room without a boot because I could use furniture for support and my room is small so I didn’t have to walk far. In the 18 years of my mediocre existence I’ve broken 5 different bones, so if you have any other questions I’ll probably be able to answer them because at this point I’m a fucking expert. 👍🏻
Getting your cast off is so freeing!! It's definitely not scary and is v exciting to know that you've almost healed completely! I was so excited to get mine off after they initially extended my time in the cast after finding another break. The physical therapy afterwards can seem a bit much and frustrating, but be kind to yourself and think about how difficult it truly is to retrain a stiff motor skill 💖💖💖 Ankles are complicated beasts! Also I hope you're doing alright! Your ankle may be healing, but please keep your heart in mind too!! I'm glad you've got such a lovely group to help lift you up right now and I know you're a fucking strong woman who will come out the other side with an ass kicking leg!!
You guys have literally saved me so many boring or sick days with your hilarious videos making the best out of situations. Thanks ever so much and feel better soon! 💕
when I got my leg cast off my leg felt very sensitive, but was probably mostly in my head. I’d say it’s important to take time and kinda ease into using it more and more as you’re comfortable, but stretching and moving it around works wonders.
I had a space boot for my broken ankle and it’s awesome I promise. It makes you feel very protected and also you have so much more movement. And you could always use it with crutches to begin with I’m sure
A few years ago I had a moon boot on my right leg for about 6 weeks. While it was great because I could take it off to shower, putting weight on it consistently proved to do more harm than good; while my actual leg injury was fine, the height under the moon boot supporting my foot meant that the length of my legs was uneven when I walked, meaning I developed tendinitis in my hip which I still have today. I would say that the moon boot is a great thing, getting the cast off isn't as scary as it sounds (the moon boot is actually really supportive and padded), and that slowly putting weight on your leg while still using crutches is the best way to go; just ensure that when you begin walking with only the moon boot, you're wearing a shoe with a decent-sized sole on the other foot. Can't wait for your video with dodie!
I remember getting my cast off was so freeing. I broke my foot in middle school and was in a cast forever, I was able to walk on it the last few weeks. The day I got the cast off I could feel the wind on my leg again and I never realized I missed that. Wearing my favorite socks, being able to scratch my leg, washing my leg freely. Keeping it casted and taking the right vitamins leads to a literally freeing and healthy reward. God be with our mortal souls.
I had a cast on my right arm (yes i'm right-handed) and a moon boot on my left leg - thankfully not at the same time - and the boot is so much more convenient and comfortable. when my cast came off, my forearm was thinner than my left one because you lose muscle mass not doing anything with it. the boot is extremely supportive though; i wore mine through a choir trip and it was fine even with all the standing and singing and walking around. it hurts as you start to use the limb again, but nowhere near as much as in the first few weeks of having it in a cast. Get well soon!
Getting your cast off it fine! There's a scary looking tool they use but it's perfectly safe. Your leg will feel very weird afterwards- you'll need to moisturise a lot and putting weight on it will feel super weird. You'll also have 1 tiny calf and 1 normal sized one
I've literally just got off a 4 day walking expedition with no internet and this is the first thing I've watched. get well soon hazel!!!! and when you're sad in the shower think of me, face covered in midge bites, hobbling through my day
Back in February and March, I was stuck in the hospital for a month after I had an operation on both Achilles' tendons and was I had casts on both legs for about three weeks - so not a broken bone, but I still couldn't weight bare. The first 10 days post surgery I was completely bed bound and the hospital staff had to use a mechanical hoist to get me to and from the bed and bathroom. Those wound casts were just cut off and then later on the same day they started me trying to walk using a forearm support walking frame. At first, my muscles could only handle a metre or so at a time, but I slowly built it up (on advice from the hospital physios). They put me in moon boots for about a week, but after realising that it wasn't helping my tendons reform in the right position, they cast me in fibreglass for a week - looked similar to what your cast does now. I could still hobble around - they gave me these rubber slides that would velcro over my foot and I used a Zimmer walking frame to help me get around my hospital room. Getting those casts off didn't hurt at all - the blade just felt like it was vibrating against my skin - and walking afterwards was still a bit tender, but I used elbow crutches and managed to get around more and more every day. I totally get what you mean about being a bit scared about weight bearing after they take the casts off. I was terrified the morning they took the casts off. But the physios and Occupational therapists will help you adjust to the new normal and teach you techniques to manage everyday things. I couldn't get up and down stairs but needed to so I could access my flat. The physios taught me the best way to approach the stairs so I wouldn't hurt myself: "good to heaven, bad to hell" - when you go up, use your best leg first and when you're going down use your bad leg first.) Trust in your physios and OT's. Also, because I know how mind-altering the pain killers can be, write down any questions you've got when you think of them (phone, notepad, ask one of your mates, etc) so you can ask the pros when they take the cast off. If you want to ask me anything else, I'm @SunniixLoo on twitter :)
Hi Hazel, my surgery was minor compared to yours but learning to walk again was an interesting experience. The fear of putting weight on the foot is real, and I found I was changing my gait which was hurting my opposite knee and hip through trying to over-protect the damaged foot. Ease yourself back in gently as I tried to do too much too quickly and found it painful due to the incorrect walking method which I then had to consciously fix, and also exhausting. Good luck (I've already pre-ordered your book :) )
broke my ankle when I was five, and two days ago got a stress fracture in my foot. Luvly. I fortunately have no cast, just the boot, but it is strangely comfortable and my dog really likes it
I have a broken wrist I got from figure skating (alas not in any royal halls) and am moving to london for a month. So clearly we should form some sort of temporarily broken superhero duo.
getting a cast off is fun!! it’s a little nerve wracking seeing your leg and how small it is but once you start physical therapy and everything it gets better!! you can do this!! ❤️
My one piece of advice is WEAR THE BOOT AS LONG AS THE DOCTORS TELL YOU TO!!!!! My dad (who is an orthopaedic surgeon might I add) broke his ankle and he did not wear his moon boot (he refused to get a cast as if he did he wouldn’t be allowed in surgery/be able to operate) as much or for as long as he should have and it took so much longer than it should have to heal Also getting the cast off is such a relief, I had my wrist in a cast for 2 weeks (not as long as you’ll have to suffer) and it was great to be able to move my hand again, which had been bent slightly back for the whole time and to be able to run it under cool water was so nice.
broke my arm a few years ago but i still remember the feeling of getting my cast off, just imagine all the air rushing right to your leg & it going numb or limp for a few seconds. also touching it is going to be a fucking wild experience hazel, numb & bumpy is the best way i can describe it
I broke my leg a few years ago and when I got a leg cast off after two months and my leg had turned really skinny. It also felt super weird to move and walk on, almost as if it was asleep, since all the muscles had wiltered away. This only took about 3 days for my body to fix which was quite amazing. Also the leg itself was a bit nasty after 2 months of not showering it, but with a bath and some body scrub that got all sorted. Point is, your body recovers really quickly and then you can WALK and move around again HURRAY. Also generally shout of to you for being lovely and just so creative and funny from Sweden. Seriously it gets all good just take a bath
I've had my legs broken 6 times (along with having an ilizarov frame attached) so I understand broken legness. I didn't do much, because having broken bones just zapped my energy so I hardly had any energy. Getting your cast off will be fine. I always laugh on how hairy my leg is after I get a cast off.
Only had my arm broken before and it also was like 15 years ago. But I remember my arm felt like jelly on the way home because the street was so bumpy. But I had no pain whatsoever and since it was my dominant hand, it didn't take me that long to use it normally again. Obviously it's probably a bit different with a broken leg, but as long as it's healed properly and you go easy at first it should be just fine ✨
The moment you get your cast off it's the strangest feeling in the world... like it looks so tiny! Never broken my leg but I have my arm twice. Good luck Hazel!!x
Sending healing thoughts... for whatever good they may do. (I suspect they may be even less effective than healing prayers. So, I'll send some of those, too.) BTW... you and Dan make your misery quite enjoyable for us onlookers. So, I'd like to reflect some of that joy back at you for whatever good it may do. And now, here's a showbiz cast story for you. A friend of mine was in a sitcom shot at the Paramount studios and one episode called for him to do a scene in a cast. I was with him as the cast was applied by an old prop guy who told us that he had also done Jimmy Stewart's cast for "Rear Window." Since my friend was wearing the cast for only one shoot day, it was a proper cast that had to be cut off after the filming. But Jimmy Stewart? He had a hinged, velvet-lined cast that could be snapped on and off every day.
Taking your cast off is like taking off a tight sweaty shirt and your skin just gets that hint of cool air and it’s relieving. Walking on it again isn’t actually that bad, just use the crutches at first for strength and support but you’ll get used it pretty quickly!
When I was fifteen I had foot surgery and had to have casts on both my feel for 6 weeks, I feel you with the shower struggle. I had to sit on the floor of the shower with my legs stuck out, it was great
I snapped 3 bones in my ankle when I was 7 and I did have to learn to walk again because I was in a cast for just over 6 months and a wheelchair. I hated it especially being so young and not quite understanding the point in even trying to walk but I do remember just practicing standing a lot whilst watching tv with my dad just for about a minute every once in a while - it is painful but you’ll get through it just take it easy.
I had a full arm cast (just under the shoulder to bottom of fingers, bent at my elbow) that was on for like 6 weeks when I was younger. Getting it off was so strange. They used this pizza slicer looking thing, and when they took it off the broken arm looked tiny compared to the non-broken one. IT kinda reinflated fully over the next couple of days, but it felt weak and sensitive to touch. But the first time I got to itch it (I have eczema so the frustration of wearing a cast was even worse) was heavenly.
It is strange and liberating and horrifying to have the ability to use your leg again after having a cast removed but mostly it smells horrible and the cast saw tickles. You’ve got this, Hazel!
When I got my cast off, it tickled. Then after I had to do exercises to get the muscle back. It didn’t hurt and it was scary to begin with but it wasn’t awful and it felt like a weight had been lifted (literally). Hope it all goes well and your back on your feet soon xx
Broke my ankle a few years ago, but not as severe (they just booted me). I started off with a crutch and the boot, but as it started to hurt less the boot on it's own was fine for getting around the house. Did take a crutch with me out incase it started aching. When you switch back to normal shoes I'd recommend flat ankle boots that are tight (so not uggs or similar). I tried wearing floppy boots and found my foot slid and killed my ankle (the muscle wasn't ready for that fight). Also your smart, so this goes without saying, but DO THE PHYSIO. It may hurt to begin with, but you'll get there. I now just get aches if I haven't walked around much for a few days.. or if I sit on it (which I continue to do for some unknown reason). Hope you're up and around soon. Good luck with it all 💙
When taking off the cast, don't forget to bring your OTHER shoe along. Actual experience.
I'm getting a boot but that is hilarious!
You’re not the only one, I also left my other shoe at home when I got my cast off
Same thing happened to me... it was very silly walking around the hospital and car park with a long socks and one shoe 😂

I had a space boot for my broken ankle and it’s awesome I promise. It makes you feel very protected and also you have so much more movement. And you could always use it with crutches to begin with I’m sure
this is bloody brilliant
Getting your cast of is the greatest this game in the world but it also feels like te part in the cast is being born again
I've literally just got off a 4 day walking expedition with no internet and this is the first thing I've watched. get well soon hazel!!!! and when you're sad in the shower think of me, face covered in midge bites, hobbling through my day
Not personal experience but my housemate broke her ankle. You'll be so glad to get the boot, its scary but the freedom to move is wonderful
Expect your leg to be sweaty, hairy, and atrophied. It's kinda gross but not that bad
The physios taught me the best way to approach the stairs so I wouldn't hurt myself: "good to heaven, bad to hell" - when you go up, use your best leg first and when you're going down use your bad leg first.)
Trust in your physios and OT's. Also, because I know how mind-altering the pain killers can be, write down any questions you've got when you think of them (phone, notepad, ask one of your mates, etc) so you can ask the pros when they take the cast off.
If you want to ask me anything else, I'm @SunniixLoo on twitter :)
Nice to see you back
getting the cast off was kinda scary cause they use this saw, but it feels so light and free and is beautiful
nice seeing you again, hazel! i wish u a fast recovery and btw that star wars pencil case is rlly cute
I broke my arm yesterday I’m right there with you hazel 😂
If you haven't watched Hazel's Instagram story "I broke my leg" - why not? Everyone needs to watch it, it's an absolute rollercoaster ride.
broke my ankle when I was five, and two days ago got a stress fracture in my foot. Luvly. I fortunately have no cast, just the boot, but it is strangely comfortable and my dog really likes it
I love these surprise uploads.
getting your cast off is really loud but doesn’t hurt! take your time bearing weight on your leg hazel! ♥️be safe
I have a broken wrist I got from figure skating (alas not in any royal halls) and am moving to london for a month. So clearly we should form some sort of temporarily broken superhero duo.
Hazel, you are a queen my dear
getting a cast off is fun!! it’s a little nerve wracking seeing your leg and how small it is but once you start physical therapy and everything it gets better!! you can do this!! ❤️
My one piece of advice is WEAR THE BOOT AS LONG AS THE DOCTORS TELL YOU TO!!!!!
My dad (who is an orthopaedic surgeon might I add) broke his ankle and he did not wear his moon boot (he refused to get a cast as if he did he wouldn’t be allowed in surgery/be able to operate) as much or for as long as he should have and it took so much longer than it should have to heal
Also getting the cast off is such a relief, I had my wrist in a cast for 2 weeks (not as long as you’ll have to suffer) and it was great to be able to move my hand again, which had been bent slightly back for the whole time and to be able to run it under cool water was so nice.
broke my arm a few years ago but i still remember the feeling of getting my cast off, just imagine all the air rushing right to your leg & it going numb or limp for a few seconds. also touching it is going to be a fucking wild experience hazel, numb & bumpy is the best way i can describe it
I need to say this some where, but hazel hays is the perfect superhero name like the alliteration is on point
Obviously it's probably a bit different with a broken leg, but as long as it's healed properly and you go easy at first it should be just fine ✨
i don’t have instagram or twitter but i wont check it just so i can laugh extra loudly at the video coming with dodie
The cutter they use to take off the cast tickles you for like 10 minutes. The fun of that alone is almost worth breaking your leg for.
The moment you get your cast off it's the strangest feeling in the world... like it looks so tiny! Never broken my leg but I have my arm twice. Good luck Hazel!!x
I once broke my leg as well, but I used crutches to get around. At home I would use a backpack to move things around. Tea/coffee in a thermos.
Hazel I’ve broken my leg 4 times and trust me getting the cast off is no bother at all! It just tickles but doesn’t hurt a bit❤️
are you ok??? 4 times ?! let's get some bubble wrap on you
Ttoby89 I could definitely do with some! 4 years in a row aswell this is my second year break-free thank god
2:40 it means you can synthesise chlorophyll to photosynthesise and turn green!
If you’re a plant!!
But the first time I got to itch it (I have eczema so the frustration of wearing a cast was even worse) was heavenly.
missed you in long form hazel! (as opposed to twitter/insta short form)
