  • Greetings! For this video, I give you a tour of my 3D Printed Houses. They all hail from Prince William County, Virginia:
    -Occoquan's Mill House Museum
    -Occoquan's Historic Rockledge Mansion
    -My Neighbors House!
    All these models were done in Blender. I go over:
    1) My usage of reference images
    2) My preference for using separate objects for the detailing (windows, doors, etc).
    3) Details are typically 0.3mm - 0.5mm high
    4) How slicing as you can go can help make sure your details translate to your printer
    5) And if you have troublesome details, how Simplify3D's Horizontal Size Compensation setting can help you proceed with the print
    6) Using a tapered angles to help with outdoor lights and bay windows
    7) Dimensions for small railings - 0.65mm x 0.85mm
    8) Dimensions for posts that support awnings - At least 2mm x 2mm
    9) Helping awnings print without supports
    10) How I use the power of intersection to make my stonework, brickwork, shingles, and siding.
    11) Finally, how layer lines may actually save you some 3D modeling time.
    More details on how I make my textures can be found at tgaw.com/wp/?p=253
    Thanks for watching!

    Hiya from Burke, Va. Just started watching your videos. I want to invest in a printer and start making HO Scale buildings for a Model Railroad. Trying to learn as much as I can before I make the leap. My interest is old Railway depots and stations. I seems these 3d objects can really be detailed and weathered fairly easy. Thanks for your Videos....
    BTW: Love Occoquan.

    Thanks for posting this video. Since we couldn't travel this summer due to global Covid-19 Lockdown conditions, I decided to take up a new hobby, and make a model of an overseas family home as a gift for my mum. This was my first outing into the world of 3d printing, which had me quite nervous as I hadnt even used most of the software involved, let alone used a 3d printer. Your video encouraged me and helped me develop skills for a new hobby. Thankyou.

    Super cool Vicky! Should we expect to see a BeetleJuice size model of your town? Really like the way you showed different techniques for getting those details for each building!

      Ha! I am sure getting there, aren't I? Our Town Hall has these beautiful arched windows and some neat detailing I think will translate well to a print. I kinda hope they ask me to model that building one day. : )

    When I was a youngster I always wanted to become an architect. But as I have a mild form of discalculia, I gave up on that one. But maybe one day when I am fit enough with modeling I could try to create the house of my dreams and then print it out on my printer. That is so cool!! Thank you so much for sharing!!

      Well thank you for stopping by! I actually had wondered if some of my practice prints or failed prints could get a new life in someone's railroad set one day. I guess it would depend on the gauge.

    You just saved my majoring with compensating width tip! I needed to print models on a 1:100 scale, my walls simply wasn't printing, even with the "detect thin walls" in slic3r prusa edition. It was just one very short width layer with a and with severe under extrusion. Thank you SO MUCH!!!

    Hi great models I'm in the UK and wanted to print buildings for my railroad, I've printed a couple which have turned out well with some of your tips on overhanging edges hopefully I'll nail it. Trouble i have is i can't take any photos of America style buildings here in the UK. Have you thought of using the goggle earth site to print from 👍

    Great inspiration!
    My Idea when I saw the multi-coloured printout of the house was to print out windows, roof etc. each with different coloured filament and glue it together afterwards.
    Do you have any experience with such an approach? Is that feasible?

    nice vid, really like this channel, I noticed that you using blender , what do you think about modeling in autodesk 3d maya ?

    • @TGAW3D
      @TGAW3D  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Peter. I can't personally speak knowledgeably on Maya. I do have some designer acquaintances that use it and it works well for them. You know how they say the best exercise is the one you do? I think I can take a similar stance on modeling softwares. The best modeling software is the one that works for you and that one that you are comfortable using. : )

      Greetings Spence! Oh I am so glad you like the Mill House. I thought it was a pretty niche item that would only appeal to people within my town, but I would be excited to see it in use with your railway! I think I have a version of the model (in .STL form) that is not in "Christmas Ornament Form". What would be the best way to get it your way? Thingiverse?

      @@TGAW3D Hi. Thanks for the reply. I am new to printing but have downloaded plans from thingiverse before so I know that will work for me. Or via email etc. I think the mill is very appealing and should do well on an English country branch line.

    great ideas. I see places where SolidWorks would shine and others where your creative tricks can be translated. I'd like to get into blender but the UI hurts my soul. not sure why non modelers would own a printer. your videos rock. horizontal size adjustment?

    • @TGAW3D
      @TGAW3D  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh Brian, I'm glad to read some of the tricks can translate to other modeling programs. Blender can be an... shall we say... an acquired taste. : )
      Re: The Horizontal Size Adjustment, I misspoke slightly. The actual Simplify3D Setting name is called "Horizontal Size Compensation". It is found in the "Other" tab.
      Thank you so much for watching and commenting. Have a great day!

    • @BGraves
      @BGraves 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I said "I don't know why non-modelers would own a printer." I was referring to the almost requirement of having a fundamental understanding of mesh modeling. Thingiverse is filled with so much poorly designed trash that I've wasted more PLA and time than I want to remember. Don't be afraid to post heavily technical slicing and modeling videos. Those things go hand in hand with 3D printing.
      As a programmer, I'm sure that tying formulas and variables to dimensions appeals to you. As an example, for things such as houses where it could be helpful to create a global variable like "extrusionWidth" and "extrusionHeight" and have formulas that are tied to a scale multiplier where when any adjustment is made to the dimension or scale, the formula would round the dimension to the nearest multiple of the extrusion width and height. In some of my items I incorporate this design intent where I see it can save me time and provide more of that tingly feeling. Parametric modeling lends itself nicely to 3d printing. Fusion 360 (free) most undoubtedly has global variables and formula driven dimensional functionality, but I use SolidWorks in my day job so I can only speak for it. Fusion 360 has a wonderful UI and workflow, though.
      What about using formula driven modeling to create some cool geometric and mathematically driven sculptures? There's a video idea for you.
      Keep at it and you'll soon be a TH-cam star. Your videos kick ass. _MakerGear M2 Club secret handshake_ Peace!

    Are your houses for sale and do you have a shop in Occoquan. Every time I drive through Occoquan I think to my self what a cool model this town would be to build.

    • @TGAW3D
      @TGAW3D  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Greetings! I love your appreciation for our little town!
      I don't have a physical shop. Maybe one day! :) For now, I sell my ornaments at the Craft Show or on Etsy (etsy.com/shop/VickyTGAW). I do have ornaments for the Mamie Davis Gazebo, the Millhouse Museum, and Rockledge Mansion. That said, the Millhouse Museum and the Rockledge Mansion have bases on them with text. I could print you just the structures standalone if that would work better for the model you have in mind.
      Either way, thank you for watching... and thank you for admiring our town!
      Vicky

      Oh my goodness-- I'm so sorry for the delayed reply. I wouldn't be able to do any new 3D Modeling projects after the turn of the year. Your museum does sound quite interesting. If my delayed timeline (of both me responding and when I could start another modeling project) still works with what you have in mind, let me know. Again, my apologies for getting back to you so late. Thank you for watching. I hope you have a fantastic day!

    Why not just import back ground images and lock them to their respective views? I know you can't manipulate them as easily as empties, but it's quicker to load a handful of images and lock them down. Am I overlooking some advantage? Those are some great models.

    • @TGAW3D
      @TGAW3D  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Robert, you have taught me a new thing about Blender!!! I frequently do background images for my bird and butterfly magnets... but-- I had never noticed that I could pick the axis for the image! So I was always adding a single image for my X-Y plane (where you could only view it in Top view)
      I don't think I'll completely wean myself from Empties just yet though. Sometimes my reference images aren't at the same size (the Side of the building might be smaller that the front), so I anticipate still having a use case of putting two empties adjacent to each other to get the scaling right.
      And.... it is more of a "want" than a need as I am sure I could work around it, but I can also see myself opting for Empties for times when I want them to stay visible as I change perspective and rotate around my model.
      Nonetheless, I'm quite excited to have a new bit of knowledge! Thank you so much for sharing a tip with me (and any eavesdroppers).
      Thanks for watching and have a most lovely day!!!

    Why not fusion 360. It’s way easier and it’s meant for stuff like 3D printing

    • @artemreinhart747
      @artemreinhart747 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fusion 360 may be more fit for architecture and 3D printing due to it being CAD/measurement wise but I understand that if TGAW started with Blender that it is easier. I personally use both so I understand why you'd use fusion 360 over blender and blender over fusion 360. I started with blender 4 years ago and fusion 360 recently so for me architecture is way easier in blender, although not measured exact, for small scale models like this it really isn't needed unless your going for exact fits. That's just my thought on it I believe.

  • @stephandevriesere3667

    Pretty good. However, your designing in blender is good but you could use some more lessons on 3d printing. You're prints could look way better then they do now.
