Thanks so much for sharing this ...thanks for showing the pictures and sharing your reunion..It is nice to know your heritage all of us need to know our heritage ..like you said some things you find out.. they shock you... but it is what it is ...and there’s nothing wrong with facing the truth..History happened ..we had no part in it ...we’re just their descendants... and I thank God because I am alive in this earth ..however way I got here ..it’s a blessing to be alive . I’m so grateful to know you don’t have to wonder about your past anymore. Thank God for DNA ..and the ability to learn the truth. It is ..what it is..My ancestry is mostly African..But all my life I’ve had a very prominent Scottish last name. And now since I’ve taken the DNA test ..I finally learned some truth. When it is all said and done ..this whole world is nothing but a melting pot ..the sooner we learn and accept this..the better off we will be..

Another historian on TH-cam stated that any person in Virginia with only 1/8 black heritage was by law white and that whites could not be held as slaves.
Sally's children were only 1/8 black so by this historian, Sally's children were in fact free whites and therefore Jefferson had no business holding them in bondage as slaves nor would he even have had the right to free them since by law they were white and therefore free at birth.
This is an issue that should be addressed.

I learned that Sally was a half sister of his wife. His father in law didn't change when he loved Sally. She likely looked like his wife a bit whom had been. " ripped from me" which is what he out on her gravestone at age 32. Jefferson's wife made him promise when she was on her death bed that he would never remarry. Jefferson loved that woman and though not perfect his descendants seem to be undamaged, so why demonize your own father when you're farther from perfect that they were. Judge not, lest you be judged.

There’s just something profound about having oral history and/or DNA that tells you about your ancestors - it makes your history vivid. Thomas Jefferson had a “legal” white family and another family, which was bi-racial. They are his children even if he tried to keep it a secret.

  • @ptbaines

Do you doubt, Edward Wallace, that the black descendants of Jefferson are high achievers? What makes you assume that they are poor? Read about Jefferson's black descendants, and you will realize that they are doing just fine. Jefferson was a slug, but many were in those days - - - because they could be, I guess. Continuing with hate and unforgiveness, serves no one.

She seems like a very nice woman, but the facts she has been given are so wrong. It's sad to see all the emotion and psychology that's been invested in this story, when according to the historical record, that relationship probably never happened. It's make-believe, promoted many scholars and The Thomas Jefferson Foundation, which have all made a pretty penny from it. Sad to see good people misled. Even if the intention is to make them proud... they would perhaps rather know the truth.

And in 1802, a mean-spirited journalist who was trying to get back at Jefferson for dissing him, published an ugly lie about him, saying he slept with a slave girl. Ever seen all the ugly things they said about Obama? Take the ugliest of them, and imagine that 200 years from now everyone believed all of them. This is the situation we're in.
