  • Did you know that one-room schoolhouses were actually the most effective way to teach and learn? Unfortunately, for the sake of efficiency, we've moved away from this style of learning. In this video I show you how I combine one-room schoolhouse style teaching and Charlotte Mason's methods in my own home. You can learn more about my methods and resources, as well as download a sample schedule, in this blog post: simplewonders.org/2022/11/02/...

So good!! We usually do family time before or at lunch, but one day we did it first and everything went better if we did that first.

Do they stay at the table together during their independent learning time, Jessica ?
My kids scatter to the wind because no one wants to be touching anyone else and everyone wants to be on the couch or on the porch or… anywhere besides the table.
And then when they’re not all sitting there, they escape and stop getting stuff done.

Good question! No, they don’t always stay at the table. They also have space issues (which I’ve read is a boy thing). I have a rule that they have to stay on the main floor. We have a big couch and coffee table in the same room as the dining table, and we have a couple sitting chairs in the next room that they like to use.
If I’m working with them one-on-one we sit at the table, and the others sit on the couch or in another room to read or work on notebooks. Buuut, they still occasionally sneak outside to play or downstairs to build legos 😆 In that case, I just gather them up when it’s their one-on-one time. I’ve found it’s helpful to explain to them what “individual learning time” is: a time to work on projects and read about things they’re interested in: taking apart electronics, making a Lego scene from a book they read, making a presentation of a topic they’ve learned a lot about, etc. they seem to be happier to stay and do school if they have a wide variety of options. If they don’t get to math and language arts during that time then we do it during one-on-one. Hopefully that helps!

I can't imagine one child being able to focus on day math, while their sibling and I are talking about.. Anything with ear shot. Kids always gone their own quiet spot to get focused work done. I'm the same way. I need peace and quiet.

I make a personalized curriculum for our family, except for language arts and math. For grammar we use the program from A Delectable Education, for math we use Learn Math Fast and Charlotte Mason Arithmetic, and for spelling we use Words Their Way.
