  • The Western Wolves are our club's an up and coming HMB (Historical Medieval Battle) team. We compete in full contact steel fighting using blunted steel weaponry and participate in various types of fights including; Buhurt (team fights), pro fighting (1 v 1 fights similar to MMA), weapon specific duelling, and mass battles. On top of that we will seek out other competition formats with the goal to further our member's skill and knowledge of the medieval combat arts.
We train weekly and run sessions for HMB and HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) at our gym in Ballarat.
We participate in local tournaments and also travel abroad.
If you are interested in finding out more information or if you are interested in joining our team, feel free to message us on our Facebook page!

What swords do you use? I am someone who has been interested in HEMA for a while, and I am wondering what differences there are in armored combat equipment compared to HEMA. (Besides the harness of course) Thank you, and i hope to see more videos soon!

Glad you are enjoying the content!
The swords we use need to be based on a historical source, and need to have a 3mm blunted edge, which meants they don't have the distal taper like historical swords. Proper balance is achieved by adding weight to the hilt, in steel scales or heavier pommels.
They also can't have rolled tips like you'll find with HEMA tournament and training weapons. But we don't thrust like in hema so that isn't important.
I have done HEMA with these longswords many times and it is totally fine, but you have reduced hand protection without the shield of a feder or a more complex guard. Also the swords are a bit heavier than Feders that most HEMA practitioners use, but are comparable to historical longswords.

    Nice foot-tourney!
Just a quick question - who does your harness? The brigs are very nice.

Imagine 14th century knights training and giving each other the fist bump at the end too-I mean who really knows the history of the fist bump? I’m just here to ask the important questions 😅 Brotherly Love and Respect 👊

HMB should be using more Harnischfechten techniques than just bashing with the blade only.

I have a message that I’m sharing where I can, some may not want to hear this, but I ask that we stay polite and seek truth together. 😊
Love is an action. Feed the hungry, house the homeless, father the orphan, and protect the defenseless and vulnerable.
Read the Word for yourself, not only relying on others for guidance. Pray for guidance.Yahushua/Yeshua - His Hebrew name who is usually called (Jesus) taught to keep the whole Word. Including the Law/Torah. Matthew 5:17 “Do not presume that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill. 18 For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not [g]the smallest letter or stroke of a letter shall pass from the Law, until all is accomplished! 19 Therefore, whoever nullifies one of the least of these commandments, and teaches [h]others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever [i]keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven." Read 1 John. John tells us that sin is lawlessness, and that we must keep the commandments. Trust in the atonement of Yahushua/Yeshua who is usually called Jesus, and keep God (YHWH)'s whole Word/commandments. Revelation 12:17 So the dragon was enraged with the woman, and went off to make war with the rest of her children, who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus. Revelation 14:12 Here is the perseverance of the saints who keep the commandments of God and their faith in Jesus.
