Which of these powerful wagons would you choose for your dream collection?

They were nice but you need to do your homework on wagons. I had a 71 Ford ltd wagon with a 429 4V and it ran great.

One thing people who didn’t grow up in that era and, more concerning, don’t know anything about cars will not know that a big block in a station wagon does not make it a muscle car. Just suggests that whoever bought it intended for it to be used to tow a boat, camper, or just haul around a scout troop - or just got a good deal at the dealership. All the manufacturers offered wagons with 454s, 455s, 440s, 429s and 460s - even 396s and 427s. There might be some truth to the muscle wagon argument with the rare versions ordered with 4 speeds, but they weren’t marketed as muscle cars. The SS Chevell wagon withhe 245 horse 454 might be an exception but I don’t recall much difference in that 454’s power output and a camper special pickup. Incidentally the wagons, while spirited, weighed more than a two door intermediate with a high performance big block and the weight was a penalty against anything that didn’t have any more performance options than sporty rims and stripe kits. Most of the station wagon smoking muscle car stories I’ve heard were against Chevelles, Cutlasses, Mustangs, and Camaros, etc powered by anything from a six cylinder to a V8 with a two barrel. That’s when a big block four barrel wagon not loaded down with a bunch of high school students or towing a boat would likely have the edge.

I had a 1958 Edsel 2 door Roundup wagon that was fast. It had the 361 V8 FE engine, and a 3 speed manual transmission. During part of the production run in '58 there was a problem with the cams going flat. Ford replaced them with the cam for a 352 Ford FE Police Interceptor engine, which gave the Edsel more power. The Roundup body was the same as the 1957 Ford Del Rio wagon, which was light enough that they often came with a 6 cylinder engine. My car with the 361 engine and the warmed up cam, plus the 4 barrel carb that all '58 Edsel cars had, made for a fast grocery-getter.

I'm puzzled why ANY models newer than 1971 were included in this video. '70 was the peak year. '71 MOPAR and a few others still had power or only minimally reduced power. By 1972, it was all over, excepting the '73/'74 Pontiac Trans Am Super Dutys. Then the long, dark malaise days until the 1987 Buick GNX.

My parents had several wagons when I was little in the late 60's/early 70s. The fastest was the 68 Olds Vista Cruiser wagon with a 400 V8 4 Barrel. That thing would fly.

Wagons had big power because back then trucks weren't as prolific as they are now and dad's needed something that could pull the airstream on vacations

In 1973 GM just trashed the A-body cars due to fuel/emissions/safety rules. The "Colonnades" were an insult to their predecessors. Over time I came to get used to their appearance but they never were a true "muscle car". Some nice graphics and decals though in trying to make up for it. OTOH, most that I ever rode in had a cushy/soft ride, which was kind of a GM thing.
