  • On the weekend of our local swap meet we decide to head down and see if there are still bargains to be found at these traditional trading places for car parts.
Has Marketplace relegated these events to the past for good or are their still hidden gems to be found? Let’s find out.

I still manage to find the diamonds in the rough at swap-meets. I enjoy the travel in the country, overnight stays, the nervous excitement before the gates open, the smell of bbq sausage or bacon and egg sandwiches on a frosty morning. The different people you meet, some lovely, some interesting, some absolutely ferral. I have been wearing the same flannelette shirt to swap meets only, for 15 years. My wife once asked why I call it my 'swap-meet' shirt. I replied that you never go into a swap meet looking like you're loaded with money or the price of things goes up 50% 😅 (nothing wrong with the Austin, Peter Brock started in an Austin A30).

This brings back nightmares as a young fella, in the lineup at 5am waiting to get in the gate, freezing my arse off in Dad's LC GTR, no heater because the car wouldn't idle without overheating....all to buy some badges and another Aussie four speed to stack with the other 20 in the shed....🤕

The amount of random stuff ive bought at swap meets down in Adelaide is pure gold. Went to one to try it for the first time being a fresh 21 year old pup and i walked out with old metal working dollys, decent set of near new micrometers, original paint hk monaro boot lid with all the patina, Iron lion ecu and extractors All for $400. I was on cloud 9 that whole day
Defaintly try to get out when they are on because really you wont know what you will find until you go and look 🤷‍♂️

    That burger looks delicious.
Interesting all the Cruisers in the backdrop. You don't see that many of them together where I live, unless you go to an event or if Terrain tamer has a meet.
It is interesting how people are also strapped for cash at the moment there. It's the same thing where I live.

swap meet will always beat FB market-place for several reasons .. there's usually a car show , usually somewhere to buy food & drink , haggling/bartering with stall-holders is expected , you never know what you will find .. and it's always a good laugh buying ' gifts ' for each other when you're with some mates

I think if you bumped into someone at a Swap meet you maybe able to track down someone or something obscure due to the pure amount of knowledgeable people in the community that congregate at such events. It’s all luck on the day and the atmosphere and adventure, that FB can never take away.

Good old Ferguson tractors. We had a few at one point. Nerd fact with those, the top arm on the 3 point hitch was revolutionary to its time because of the mechanism it stopped flipping of the tractor when plowing allowing the hitch to rise and (if I remember rightly) disengage drive in the event of a snag.

I went to an american/aussie hotrod swapmeet just for a look back in the 90s not expecting to find anything, but scored a rare as rocking hose poo cast metal grille for my '73 alfa gtv sitting on top of a pile of scrap for $20. Back then a mint unbroken one would fetch up to $500. Such a score, I never forgot it.

Absolutely smashing couple of blokes are Al and Woody, glad to see you're still going strong (I've been away from TH-cam for ages). I've got to say though, I think you're criminally under subscribed for what you do. Don't get me wrong 270k people is an amazing achievement, it's just the content is the quality of 2.7M subscribers. Then you get these talentless, ugly, loud and shouty seppos with 12M subs and you start to wonder when the world collapsed. Sorry for the essay fellas, its just I'm so happy to see you again bit equally disgusted with humanity... :) :)

This brought back some good memories! Unfortunately haven't been to a boot sale/swap meet for 20 odd years now - they were always a lot of fun, mostly just chatting more than spending. I too learned to drive on a Ferguson tractor - on a golf course though, not a farm. Nearly rolled it several times - it was too knackered to do wheel stands though. They had a much bigger, much more powerful International with a FEL and PTO, but I wasn't allowed to drive that one.

Looking at your swap meet and comparing it with the swap meet in Fielding in NZ, they are miles apart. I have been going to the Palmy swap meet ( in Fielding) as its affectionately known, for thirty five years and its slowly gotten worse and worse, in my opinion. The stuff for sale is old junk and as for offering a price good luck with that. This year I stayed until sellers were leaving to watch them load up most of what they came with and take it home. A man should fly over to Oz for the weekend and go to your swap meet, if nothing else at least the weather should be better.

That said Pre 80 stuff it's a good place to look.
As a seller it has its advantages, Only messing around packing and setting up with no bs phone calls and missed appointments whilst you have let someone know where you are.
My favorite was the trading post for parts and when the classifieds ruled you would sell stuff on the day instead of having to put up with people hanging around chasing old adds.
