    I bought these. Main reason is I like buying lower end gear and slowly work my way up. Only speakers I could afford at the moment but now I’m saving up for some Yamaha h4.

    Hi. Thank you so much for posting this, as this is exactly what I was looking for. I've got the Scarlett Solo 2nd gen., along with Bias Amp which is what I'm using it for), but I'm still trying to figure it out. I got these because I want to be able to not only get the tones of different real amps, but to actually do with it what an actual guitar amplifier does (you know, AMPLIFY the sound -- hence the name..), but it seems that no one ever talks about how to actually do this, so it's really hard to find any information on this for total noobs like myself (it's like everyone seems to assume that it's only used for recording and listening through headphones...,,anyhoo). But, I figured that studio monitors ought to work, which is why I'm here (and thinking about getting these CR3s, btw).
    So, I have a question, if you could possibly help: With my guitar plugged into the interface and the interface plugged into my computer, is there a way to listen to it through the computer (speakers) itself, or does the sound output signal come only out of the interface itself? Could I possibly listen to it through headphones plugged into my computer, or would I have to plug the headphones into the interface itself?

    • @TheTechWhiz
      @TheTechWhiz  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This was one of the things I wanted to do as well and one of the reasons for buying an interface and studio monitors myself! And to answer your question: YES! You can absolutely use speakers or monitors with your audio interface. I had used the 2i2 1st Gen with Amplitube and was able to get everything going. Admittedly, it was a big weird because the audio wouldn't come through if I had the monitors connected to the TRS output in the back, but rather only if I had them connected to the headphone monitor in the front. Now this could have been a nuance with the 1st Gen model and/or Amplitube and admittedly I didn't try to troubleshoot too much either. Currently, I'm using a Yamaha mixer in this same manner where I can get output from Amplitube to the monitors from the stereo monitor out. I have it in my video idea backlog to make a video about this, but haven't executed yet. Hope that helps!

      @@TheTechWhiz Thanks for the reply. I did happen to find some old Aiwa speakers someone gave me that have TRS plugs (the kind the Solo takes), and, although I did get sound through them, I believe there is something wrong with the speakers, as the volume (even turned up all the way) is very low, and sounds like absolute crap (they can't take any bass -- even with the bass turned completely down and the volume lowered -- they sound overloaded), really muddy. But hopefully studio monitors will work. I did try it with headphones when I first got it (which was a couple years ago -- I had put it away and kinda forgotten about it but I'm just now bringing it back out again) and that sounded pretty good (sounds promising, anyway, but the 'real speakers will be the true test).
      You said you could only get the sound to your speakers out of the headphone jack? That's weird. How would you have plugged it in though if they have RCA plugs in them?
      And yeah, man, if you wanted to make a video about that that would be awesome. I'm sure I'm not the only one that would appreciate it. There's a lot of us out here that aren't that tech savvy, many of whom are probably too embarrassed to let it be known just how ignorant they are with basic questions to those who tend to speak over their head as if everyone out here is at least as savvy as they are.
      Btw, how do you like Amplitube, and are you pleased at all with the sound you get out of your monitors?

    • @TheTechWhiz
      @TheTechWhiz  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 2i2 has TRS outputs so I just used a TRS cable to connect the monitors but if you only have RCA output, then the Mackies that I use can take that as input as well. I'll definitely plan to make a video about using an interface/mixer with some sort of amp simulation software in the future. My current video in the works will be on a Yamaha MG10XU mixer. As for Amplitube, I do like it especially the interface and the options for selecting amps and cabinets as well microphones and even positioning them. I only use the free version that just comes with a few basic essentials but it's enough to get the job done when I need to play and practice quietly without using my tube amp. Let me know what you decide on for your setup and how it turns out!

      @@TheTechWhiz Thanks. It'll be a while before I can get the speakers (due to certain unfortunate recent circumstances affecting my current financial situation -- but that's another story), but I'll be sure and let you know when I do. I just installed Ableton Lite Live and Pro Tools First (the free versions that came with the Focusrite), and, I didn't have any trouble with the Ableton, but the Pro Tools was a different story. It seemed to download okay, but wouldn't make it through the entire installation process -- I kept getting an error message saying a particular file (the same one on multiple attempts, I believe, but I think another one may have been the issue on another attempt...anhyhoo..) couldn't be located (or some such thing), even when attempting other/earlier versions. The pop-up window showed this message and said to make sure that the file existed or that I could locate it myself (before proceeding further -- or so it made it seem) along with (seemingly) three options to click: 1) Abort, 2) Retry, and 3) Ignore, yet, the only one that would do anything (of course) was "Abort" (just my luck -- though, I'm not sure I would have wanted to continue with the attempt anyway without being sure the respective file existed, which I wasn't sure about; I couldn't find it at the time under what I was pretty sure to be the appropriate folder(s), but _can_ find it now, except, I believe only from the other downloads (from multiple attempts))). So after staying up basically all night, and extremely frustrated and about ready to give up (even after having already tried to research others' attempts/advice/solutions with no luck, _finally_ found an actual Focusrite site on this very problem, which recommended to extract a certain file(s), and "Run as Administrator" (I'm really not even sure what that means), and, to my surprise, IT WORKED (YAY!)! So I _finally_ got it. At least I _think_ I did; I was able to open the programs but haven't actually messed around with them to make sure they work properly, partly because I really don't know what I'm doing so am just now starting to look at some tutorials to try and figure it all out and learn the ropes.
      Say (assuming you're still reading this), have you by any chance tried either of these DAWS I mentioned (or any, for that matter)? I looked up that Yamaha mixer you mentioned yourself, and see that it's an actual hardware mixing device, as opposed to a DAW (or is it used in conjunction with a DAW(s)?)). Is this what you prefer over them? ...So, I presume they've still yet to make the actual _physical_ equipment/counterparts (other than a computer, of course) obsolete? ;)

    • @TheTechWhiz
      @TheTechWhiz  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow that sounds like quite the struggle! But I also have installed Pro Tools First yet have not dabbled in it much. I also tried Reaper as well but again didn't use it much. I didn't run into the issues like you did with Pro Tools but I just downloaded and installed from their site, not from anything I got with Focusrite. It was weird though because it required a separate Avid authentication tool or something. And as for the mixer, that just allows for more connections for various inputs from different sources. If you still wanted to record multiple tracks and things like that then you'd still need some sort of DAW.

    Oh crap, I forgot my Focusrite Solo was 3rd gen, and therefore only had TRS cable inputs for speakers. When I bought the CR-3X, it only came with the RCA to headphone input cable. :")

    I have the Sterling MX3 studio monitors they came with an RCA to a single 1/8 audio jack. So I just put a 1/4 adapter on the end of that and plugged it into the headphone jack of my audio interface which is the PreSonus AudioBox USB 96.
    Idk if that's right but it sounds alright lol.

    • @TheTechWhiz
      @TheTechWhiz  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ha if that works for you that's all that matters! You'd get slightly better results getting the proper cable/adapter and using the appropriate main output from your interface, but as they say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" :)

    Are you able to monitor the signal/recording from your microphone connected to a preamp using the RCA cable only connected between the speakers and computer or is that solely via interface/TRS cable?

    Is it just the 3 inch models you get that little commission for (and does that only work if they're purchased directly through the link provided here)? Or also the 4 and 5 inch? I'd like to pay it forward for being such a great help on this, but am thinking I might go for one of the larger ones. Also, do I take it the only difference between them is the volume? I'd like to get the most volume as I can since I'll mostly be using these along with my amp sim/interface as a substitute for a real amp (though, only for home -- not gigging or anything like that). Lastly, do I understand that these are powered speakers (for all 3 sizes)?

      Hey we all gotta start somewhere, but you can most certainly find a cable to allow you to do that, but the quality would be the equivalent of using only RCA cables because it would be unbalanced. However, the quality difference is pretty negligible, so it's up to you if you want to go that route. Personally I'd just use the included RCA cable and you'll be fine.

But they didn't have a balanced TRS input that I was looking for to work with my interface. If you interested in audio consumption to work with a turntable or just use to listen to music then I'd go for the Edifiers. If you want a jack of all trades set of monitors where maybe you're mixing audio in addition to consuming it, then I'd go for the Mackies. Both are great though for under $100

As for me, I'm thinking of given the edifiers a try just to try something different for my office PC set up. I've used mackies in the past for live concerts and never had any complaints with them. Just wish I could hear the two in person because reading people's reviews can be so misleading as a lot has to do with personal preference.

      @@TheTechWhiz they have audio interface with multiple inputs?

    • @TheTechWhiz
      @TheTechWhiz  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes they do. Most interfaces and mixers have multiple inputs for several different sources. Many also have multiple outputs so you'll have to decide if you want to use your speakers as the monitor or main output. Is that what you mean?

      @@TheTechWhiz ok so basically the audio interface is transferring music through the computer right?

    • @TheTechWhiz
      @TheTechWhiz  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually the opposite. The interface or mixer that you uses actually takes over the audio processing. So the computer sends it to the interface to be processed and sent to the outputs. That's why you used get a bit better audio using an interface because they handle the audio processing better than the built in sound card on most motherboards.

      Not a dumb question at all. There are many reasons someone may want to use an audio interface. I use one so that I'm able to hook up my guitar and use amp simulator software on my computer. So your audio interface will allow you to connect multiple microphones with XLR outputs to your interface and power them if they are condenser mics, provide direct monitoring, allow you to record or stream your audio at a higher sample rate, and in general just serve as a better audio "handler" than your on-board sound card that came with your computer. Hope you can get that podcast up and running soon!

      Jericho Moon it's the QUALITY, mainly so.. Sometimes you'll see delays in recordings or just inferior quality in your recordings - all this without an interface, a direct input.. Not to mention there's gonna be some hissing and unwanted sounds too..
      An audio Interface not only does justice to your sound and Lossless direct recordings to your PC, it also compliments the True capabilites of any good speakers/monitors so to speak! @TheTechWhiz  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there! It'll depend on your DAW and amp sim of choice, but there should be a way to always hear the processed sound. I used the free version of Amplitube with the Scarlet 2i2 and was able to get the process sound through the headphone monitor output. I couldn't get it to come through the main output but never tracked down if that was an issue with my ASIO driver or just an Amplitube setup issue. But I think if I'd used a different DAW with amplitube as the effects plug in I could have had it come out of the main. Once you get everything setup let me know if you have issues and we can work it out. I'd love to make a video on this specific topic but just haven't found the time unfortunately

    Hi @TheTechWhiz, nice review. May I ask you two questions? 1) I've the same Focusrite Interface and I'm thinking of buying the Mackie CR4 (BT versione). Do you think that I can use two different jack cables in order to wire the monitors and the usb interface or do I need a TRS Cable (I'd prefer this to the RCA solution)?? 2) I would use these monitors for playing my guitar with Garage Band's VST and to make some mixing and mastering (actually I use my headphones), do you think they are ok for this purpose? Thank you in advance!

    • @TheTechWhiz
      @TheTechWhiz  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there - thanks for watching and asking. 1) I'm not sure I quite understand this question, but are you basically asking how you can use the include RCA cable to connect to the interface since it only has the TRS ouput? If so, then I suppose you could use the 1/4" to 1/8" adapter that came with your interface in the headphone out then connect the 1/8" to RCA from the headphone out to RCA in on the speakers, but this isn't very ideal and I would definitely just recommend picking up the TRS cable (it's pretty cheap) and maybe just try this in the meantime. 2) Yes, I think the CR4s would work well with Garage Band, I use the CR3s with Amplitube for playing my guitar.
      Let me know if this helps!

About 1) I mean that I'd like to use the rear line outputs (Left and Right) of the Focusrite: do I need one cable with two plugs (jack) or I can also use to different jack cables (one from left output to left monitor and one from right output to right monitor)? Thank you again, you're very kind!

      Oh okay I see now. Then yes you could do either option. So if you have two different TRS cables, you could use one for the left and the other for the right. Or if you have one cable (like I show) that has two connections at either end - that will also work.

      @@TheTechWhiz Perfect, man! I had the doubt that the double cable was the only solution! Thank you again, you were very kind! :)

    Can i use an instrument cable from Audio interface. Speaker cable?

    • @TheTechWhiz
      @TheTechWhiz  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you are going from a balanced output to a balanced input, I'd always recommend a TRS cable. You could use a TS cable (instrument cable) but these are unbalanced and could introduce some noise or interference to your audio signal but if not using a balanced output/input then it wouldn't matter. I wouldn't suggest a speaker cable since these are meant for an amplified signal like when going from a guitar amp to a passive speaker cabinet.

    Hey mate. Nice work. Do you know if there is a simple way to add a subwoofer? I have the same hear but the CR4s. The sub I have has just been 'borrowed' from an old Yamaha home cinema set up. It's powered but only has the one input (coaxial). Do you think splitting the signal (with a Y splitter) from one channel from the interface to send to the sub and monitors would work? I'm pretty sure the sub has an inbuilt crossover.

    Any benefits (or difference in quality) of connecting through an interface over 3.5mm AUX?

    • @TheTechWhiz
      @TheTechWhiz  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Slightly better quality, but nothing crazy. Comes down to if you're willing to invest a bit of money to get the slight bump in quality.

      TheTechWhiz Thanks for the clarification bruh. I’m planning on using CR3s and a MPK Mini to make some music. I’m starting to think I may not need an interface since my controller and mic are USB, and the speakers connect to AUX.

      Yeah you could probably get away without one then to get started and then as you get more into it you can always upgrade. Might want to look into getting a decent pair of studio headphones though too.

      Yup! Just use the included RCA to 3.5mm cable

      But will connecting the speaker directly to the keyboard effect the sound quality .

    • @TheTechWhiz
      @TheTechWhiz  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's certainly not ideal to go RCA into a headphone jack rather than using TRS connection but the fact it's on your keyboard shouldn't make much of a difference because it's just a USB pass through

      Is dual RCA to dual TRS recommended ?
      And really like how you respond to your viewers ❤️

    • @TheTechWhiz

      That could work but would cancel out the balanced benefit of the TRS because RCA is unbalanced

    Hi, thks for your video. I'm using the Mackie CR3 with the Scarlet 212 thru RCA cables. Default Audio Interface on Windows 10 is set to Scarlett. Works fine. However there is a lotamount of Bass and I'm not able using an EQ, add treble this way. Is there an app or something else I can do to choose the kind of EQ that suits me ? Can I plug my speakers in the 2 ways with 2 cables from tne Scarlett (TSR + RCA), and then switch from one (Scarlett) to another (PC Sound Card) from my PC settings... ?

    How would you pair these speakers with a subwoofer? If the subwoofer is self powered, what all is needed? Looking to hook these up to a polk 10 inch, any info would help!

    • @TheTechWhiz
      @TheTechWhiz  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Assuming you're talking about the PSW108, looking at the pictures it looks like you would need RCA into the sub either from an interface or PC and then using speaker wire just connect to the Mackies from the speaker output.
