  • We're bracing for a long and difficult winter. I think that the trick to enjoying a long and difficult winter is to embrace the way that the people of Norway think about winter. I think a Wintertime Mindset is the Norwegian secret to happiness during a long, dark winter.

Although from southern part of Norway - I agree with you: You have to embrace the dark months and make them into something positive. Here the day has already increased by 15 mins, by end of January by two hours. And by March 21st - we all have 12 hrs day. A "Happy New Year" to both of you plus Lil, Pablo and Toby.

I am from the middle part of Norway, and it aloot more darker than south. But nothing like the northern part where there is no sun for 6-7 weeks. Remember, if you cut norway out of a map, and set a pin on the southern part of norway and turn norway around, the northern tip will hit south spain. It is a LONG country and its half the lengt of europe. So it is nice of to specify north of Norway since they have a different mindset than rest of Norway, including us in the middle.

When I was a kid living in N. Iowa, we had chores to do as soon as we got home from school. That meant any time we wanted to play was done in the dark once late Fall/winter started. We had a great time sledding and making snow forts, all done in the "dark". Because once you have a snow cover on the ground, it never is as dark as summer dark, even without a full moon.

I dont know much about dogs, but given Toby is a livestock guardian I am wondering if he choose to sleep in the best vantage point. Inside the enclosed igloo he can only see in one direction. Under the duck house he has a 360 view.

One of the volunteers at the hospital broght her golden retriever with her as a therapy dog. They would visit with long term patients and of course the kids in pediatrics. When the dog enters the room and they pet him, endorphins are released. Enjoy Toby dog. Heard something important from Al Lumnahs. He said embrace the cold. Sound advice from someone who knows.

I love watching this channel. I used to have two big white akbash dogs. Toby looks and acts just like them... my dogs were extremely friendly, very lazy during the day..Became engaged before sun down and barked all night.... they loved being out in the cold weather. They seemed to prefer being out in the very cold elements rather than being in the shelter that was provided for them.

Living in the tropical north of Australia it's not easy to relate to snow and ice and cold winds, however living on a cattle station (aka ranch) I can totally relate to the seasonal changes and their effects of emotions. You have winter, we have "the wet" and our summers have 100% humidity and a temperature average 104F but all things are relative. The family really enjoys your work and your work ethic and we really appreciate all the effort you put into everything you post.

Seeing this now, over a year later, but your words about winter answered a thought that was bugging me today, that of why am I not moving forward right now. And what you said about winter, is also true about "seasons" in our lives. It is healthy just to spend some time crocheting an afghan, watching these videos, reflecting on things, working mentally on myself, using my indoor bike, sitting in the sunlight in my entryway reading a book. I don't need to justify this, it is a healthy part of the cycle, and is preparing me for the next "season".

So true. We are down in the Texas gulf coast, but the "gloom" can still be there. We bought our 1/3 acre rural town subdivision home and have been SUPER BUSY constructing infrastructure for 6 months, this winter down time is being used to slow down, relax and still make forward progress on non rush items that will only enhance our plans for next year. Thank you for being you and not faking it to make it!!!! You da man!!!!
