My Dad is Portuguese. In Fall River Ma. in the 50s and 60s there were very very few black people living there. So the newest immigrant group is always treated how racists and asseholes always treat black people. Nowadays it is the cambodians Mexicans and black people who have come down from Boston but back then it was the Portuguese. So they used to call him LTW...less than white.... but it never bothered him because in his mind the blacker a musician played the better he played.
While the stereotypical western metaphors for colors make white purity and goodness and Black evil and.sin I was never aware of that dynamic until I ran into it when we moved to the suburbs. To me I had always thought of the metaphorical sliding scale of shades of grey between White and black completely differently....
For me growing up Black represented COOL Soulful the future edginess....all the things that a young kid like myself was attracted to... while white represenoted corny, awkward, suburban soulless boring ....people in church clapping on the 1 and 3 instead of the backbeat....
