- A learner on a mock test got confused on how to overtake cyclists safely, so thought I share a video on how to make the plan for overtaking before overtaking. When there is a problem on the road, maybe cyclist, slow car, roadworks or a bus and needs overtaking - it's all about making a plan and overtake safely. Without planning there's always going to be a problem. Hopefully this video will help on the subject of how to overtake safely.

@@DrivingTV though here in my country, Kenya, the test is done pretty different. No much details are put into consideration. Many do pass and get their driving licenses.

What id normally do in residential areas. If hang back and see what their next move would be. If they turning then thats great no fuss no muss.
But rewlly be on the lookout for those signals. A handful of cyclists DO signal.
Drivers have to be aware that signalling involves taking their hand off the handle bar. Especially if they are going pretty fast and it aint easy to do all the time.
I drive a standard 2001 honda and its not hard to have an eye for those cyclists or even motorcycles.
But i also ride a fairly highpowered ebike but adapted to be abke to get on the road and off the road. Brcause of the increase in speed.

I was in this situation on a driving lesson, and the instructor just told me to speed up, which was opposite of the adverts I had see where it says leave plenty of room and treat it like its a car.

I do think you need to make clear the gap the learner driver needs to give the cyclist when overtaking per HW code: at least 1.5m at speeds of more than 30mph and more if going faster ie 2m space. Or emphasise the width of a large car is better for learner drivers and even experienced drivers to visualise how much space to give when overtaking cyclists.
As both a driver and cyclist I have had to report one driving instructor for close passing me (action taken by police) and gave another learner driver and his instructor a ticking off for beeping at me as they overtook on a quiet road (do not do as it is inconsiderate to the cyclist and distracting.)

Yes, but do have few lessons with an experienced ADI. If you’re thinking of becoming an ADI then it’s important your driving is good, not just good driving but also knowledge of driving.
If your driving is good and have the knowledge, then it’s easier to teach and pass the knowledge on.

If will busy road incase will bit long to over takeing cyclists u said stay behind. But cyclists not going my speed. What should I do. How many miles speed I will drive this secution. Cos if will busy road can’t over take quick need to behind stay. If will behind slow driving behind cycle will caught quicker cos my speed slow but not like same cycle. Hai sir. If I upgrade my full automatic license to manual my validity date will remain same or I will get the new valid date?
That was a helpful video, but I failed my test because of this situation on a dual carriage way , I noticed cyclist little late as I wasn't expecting him on A1 and i was driving at 56mph, my first reaction was to slow down which i did , but being a learner i could not check the mirrors to overtake and there were plenty of cars on right lane, So should I have drove on 20mph (as cyclist and follow him till i find a gap) or I switch on hazard lights as i was suddenly slowing down (but both indicators on - when i actually want to overtake). Pleas tell me how could i handle the situation?
What if the line separating the lanes is a solid line, can I still overtake over the middle line?
