I looked it up too. The modern ladder was invented in the late 1800s but there have been ladders since the middle ages. The first recorded use of a firearm was in the 1300s.

Firearms were invented in the late 15 hundreds by Richard Gattling, making a "Gattling Gun," whereas Ladder were made in 1862 by John H. Balsley. Therefore depending when in the 1800s he was talking about, ladders weren't around.
