Yanmar 2GM Engine Rebuild: How to INSTALL PISTONS | JOURNAL BEARING clearance (Part 6)

- How to install pistons in the block without piston ring compressor? After some serious struggling with the proper tool we end up making our own which works much better. The next step is to put new journal bearings and measure their clearance. We're getting closer to putting the whole engine back together.
If you like what you see don't forget to give us the thumbs up!

Dang Dude U Have a Lovely GF an She's Not Afraid of Putting a Wrench to The Engine?...She's a Keeper For Sure, You're Blessed Bud!
Thanks. I think so too. ;)
Good job surgeons. Love the term snot oil even looks like it alittle. Learnt a few things today. Great video guys. Can't wait until Thursday video spoiled alittle too❤⛵😍❤💓💓💓
Thanks and happy to hear that you learnt a few things too.
I enjoyed thanks for taking the time out to share
Our pleasure Jeff
The ring compressor isn't supposed to go into the cylinder, it just sits on the top and you tap the piston in. That's why the ring cap is important. keep going, most people are terrified of the engine, that's why most are junk.
Thanks for the heads up. We tried it both ways and it would not work at all outside of the piston. The rings kept getting stuck. The diy tool did the trick tho
@@WildlyIntrepid yeah, except really good quality (read; expensive) ring compressors, they are junk. Most tools now are single use and only good for a “it’s what I had” type thing. Good quality tools are going to be 3 or 4 times the price as the junk you can buy at the auto parts store. I paid $140 for a 1/4” drive set, used to be a mechanic and that was like 15 years ago, still have it still works great.
Ya tools are tricky sometimes. Especially for things you don't use often.
Boom first again, South Australia
You're too fast
Which side goes the piston? Any mark on the piston to see if it’s on transmission side or gear housing side ?
If I recall I noticed a F on the underside of the piston. I believe ours faced forward but I would just pay attention when removing the old and install the new one the same way.
@@WildlyIntrepid thanks for the reply.. yeah I know .. but as it was a big struggle to take them out (2 seized) I forgot to pay attention on the side of rod .. and pistons.. I only know which one was the middle one. As im rebuilding all engine, I’ve new pistons on the table connected with old rod .. the only info that is missing is what is the side of new pistons.. as I guess rod with new pistons and new crankring doesn’t really matter where it goes .. only pistons need to be in right positions if there’s any .. I only have kind of arrow underneath pistons.. and writing 0S025 on top .. I try to figure out which side is it.. only two way possible .. I heard number on the connecting rod should face the camshaft.. or arrow pointing front engine.. but not sure if arrow is really arrow
@@WildlyIntrepid could you send me an message on whatsapp and I could show you sign in pistons .. do you remember anything ? I also have some number and letters on the rod .. and each rod has a “I” on the other face .. thanks !
Sorry I can't really be that much help as we did the job a while ago and can only speak about our engine. I really wouldn't want to direct you in the wrong direction just based on my own memory. We are not mechanics and just went off some guidance and our engine manual. I really wish I could help but all I can say is take pictures and video when you take things apart. We even had to look back at footage to be sure everything was assembled correctly. Maybe you can try where you purchased your parts from. Best of luck.
What about honing the cylinders with a bottle brush hone?
It didn't seem like it was needed as I could still see the crosshatching.
@@WildlyIntrepid Gotcha. That makes sense. Thanks for sharing this series of videos. I have only owned sailboats with outboard motors, but I am thinking about a bigger boat that has this model of diesel engine. I have rebuilt many gasoline engines for trucks and airplanes but have never worked on a diesel engine. I watched your entire series to get a feel for this particular Yanmar and the installation of it in a sailboat. It was very informative. You did a very good job. I bet you learned some skills to enhance your seamanship and confidence. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you very much. I was in a similar position before digging into ours. I had done some work on cars but nothing like this. Glad it helped. Hopefully your future project goes smoothly.
Next time don't put oil/lube behind the bearing cap.. you don't want anything behind that can aid in the bearing caps spinning... not saying this is gonna happen, but that's the theory behind why that's not done... 😉🙂
👍👍👍
hello friends I really like your channel, and you have encouraged me to repair my engine, I ask you where you bought the repair kit, I have the same engine, I thank you in advance, you are disappointed the best of luck and I loved your baby
Thanks so much. Glad we have helped your confidence in taking the project on yourself. We ordered most of our parts from Toad Marine. It wasn't a kit but you should be able to find what you need. They are very helpful as well with exploded pictures of all parts of the engine so you can find what you need.
👍!!!
LOL the suitcase scale, they are not even close to being accurate I would trust the tourqe wrench
We did check the scale and it was accurate but if we had a torque wrench that wasnt from harbor freight I wouldnt have been so picky.
Next time dont put oil under bearings you don't want the bearings to spin .only put oil on spinning surface
Thanks for the tip. We will keep that in mind. I thought we only put it where the journals meet but I must have done both sides I guess
@@WildlyIntrepid sorry I didn't see that other already said that no need for people to tell you more then once lol . Keep the videos coming your one of my Sunday night show I can't wait to watch .👍👍👍👍
@@FUELFIREGARAGE its all good. Thanks for looking out for us.
Should never lube behind the bearings your promoting bearing spin and that little bit of oil can cause the bearing to be too tight on the crank at proper tourqe
Thanks for the heads up. I suppose I missed that part. Good to know that it can mess with the torque. I dont pretend to know what Im doing. Only showing our process. Next time.
NEVERRRRRRRR!!!!!!!! PUT OIL BEHIND THE BEARING SHELL ON THE CONRODS, NEVERRRRR.
Everything seems fine but someone else did mention that as well. Thanks.
