Hey Tom It's a self healing hobby cutting mat, you can get them at most hobby shop, faberic shops or Staples. As for the vibration source any small electic motor with an offset weight on the output shaft will work. The toothbrush should work fine, as long as you can mount it.
I just used a peice of plastic the same size as the sides and used a 6" bar clamp to clamp plastic down to hold the mat in place, you can see the black and orange clamp right at the start of the video. This way I can just unclamp it and slide the green mat out to clear the mat off.

I bet if your motor was rotating on the same axis as your water bar you would get a different result.

Didn't Gold Rush Alaska try something similar on their show and could not figure out how to work it.
try running the water holes out the top of the header, you wont have the channels and it will spread out the cons
