    This was fun.
Not only did I know the references, I remember when some of them came out and were the new-fangled invention. (I just turned 57) VCRs were new when I was in high school; Sega was the new thing that little kids were playing with. I remember when the first video store opened in town in the 80s; people said it was a stupid idea and would never take off. (A lot of people didn't have a VCR, so you could rent a VCR at the same time you rented your movie.) Of course, video stores didn't die out (then). The were huge! Every neighborhood had 3 or 4 of them. We had to pay 50 cents if we didn't rewind, and that was a big deal. To lighten the stress on your VCR you could buy a VHS rewinder at Kmart for $20. (Equal to about $50-55 now). That sounds like a lot but the VCR itself cost $500-700 (2023: $1364-1910) so you didn't want to burn out the motor. All you had to do was use it 40 times and it paid for itself!
You could actually make a collect call on any phone. I remember calling home collect from my college dorm room. I also had a chart taped to the wall by the phone (yes, you had to walk to a specific spot to use the phone). The chart outlined when the long-distance rates went down. Usually 9pm M-F and 5 or 7pm on the weekend. One phone company made a huge stir by changing the time to 5pm 7 days a week. The government had just split up Ma Bell (there's another one for your quiz) and so you either used AT&T or MCI for long distance. Us money-savvy types signed up for MCI. Push-button phones had just come out and you had to pay more every month if you had push-button phones instead of rotary. Not only did I have MCI, I saved money by getting a rotary phone for the dorm room. Super smart. Oh, you also had to pay extra if you had a second phone on the same line, and the evil phone company could tell if you connected a phone to a second outlet.
My oh my. If anyone read all of this, good for you. But I got a kick out of writing it and reminiscing.

funny how everyone knows what netflix is but no one remembers they started as a service that delivers movies in red envelops. And that wasnt even that long ago.

I'm only 25 but this made feel old. Growing up with dial-internet, whenever my parents made a call we would switch over to playing "3D Pinball Space Cadet" or going on "Microsoft Paint" and mess around.

"Be Kind Rewind". VHS tapes gave you sequential, linear access to a feature film. Rewind the tape or deal with a one dollar penalty fee!!! DVD and Blu Players give you random access to a film.

The DVD Player didn't hit the North American market until 1997. Betamax and VHS VCR's competed around 1975. RCA lost a fortune on the CED Player.
