CLIP DESCRIPTION:
A huge fight erupts when Janis (Lizzy Caplan) calls out Cady (Lindsay Lohan) for her behavior and says she's transformed into a Plastic.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Tina Fey from Saturday Night Live wrote and appears in this comedy about the alternately funny and terrifying pecking order among teenage girls. Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) is a 15-year-old girl who has spent most of her life in Africa, where she was home-schooled by her zoologist parents. When her family relocates to the United States, Cady finds herself attending a high school in suburban Illinois, where she gets a crash course in the various sub-strata of the student body: the jocks, the cheerleaders, the stoners, the "cool" kids, and so on. Much to her surprise, Cady finds herself embraced by a clique of rich and popular girls known to outsiders as "the Plastics," led by Regina George (Rachel McAdams), Gretchen Weiners (Lacey Chabert), and Karen Smith (Amanda Seyfried). While Cady is grateful for her new friends, it doesn't take long for her to realize how manipulative they can be, and she soon discovers she's violated an unwritten law when she goes out on a date with Aaron (Jonathan Bennett), who is charming, good looking...and Regina's former boyfriend. It isn't long before Regina and her pals are on the warpath, and Cady must face a level of vengeful behavior for which years in the jungle never prepared her. Joining Tina Fey in the supporting cast are fellow SNL players Amy Poehler, Ana Gasteyer, and Tim Meadows. The screenplay for Mean Girls was based in part on Queen Bees and Wannabes: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends and Other Realities of Adolescence, a book by professional youth counselor Rosalind Wiseman.

But originally, Janis and Damian started talking to her probably because she was new and they originally wanted to protect her from the Plastics. It was after that when Cady got asked to sit with the Plastics that they snatched the opportunity to get revenge.
16 years later I still can't stand the fact that Janis doesn't get any blame for the situation and the whole movie she is seen as "the good girl" even tho is completely true she used Cady for her petty revenge, wanted to hurt Regina and none of the drama would have happened if it wasn't for her. It just boils my blood when at the spring fling scene Cady just sucks up to her and Janis doesn't even apologize for anything.
I hardly ever relate to the things that happen in teen movies.

I didn’t understand how Janis got off scott free. When she was on a rant to Kady, I thought that rant was personal and about herself. Janis was still obsessed about Regina or her revenge against her, and even though Kady got caught up in her façade as plastic, Janis used Kady to exact revenge, and Janis didn’t really become a better friend, unless I missed something important.
Why are you all ignoring the fact that Cady is the one who wanted revenge? Before Regina kissed Aaron, Janice didn’t have any plan. It was only once Cady got pissed at Regina that Janice started helping her come up with ideas for revenge.

When Janis said "it won a *prize* " I can feel her almost breaking down. Like when you finally let go of the person you try to cling on to. She may have said all those things but her voice trembling at the very end shows she kind of regrets it.
Even Lindseys subdued crying at the end was done wonderfully. Both great actresses.

She is, but she didn’t start it. Cady was the one who wanted revenge on Regina after she kissed Aaron. No one is entirely at fault which is the whole point of the movie.

@Jessica Hollister actually not really. Cady told Janis about the the burn book she said let post this to expose the plastics but Cady said no and Janis drop it. It wasn't until after Regina kiss Aaron and Cady was hurt by it Janis came up with a plan and Cady was on down for it. In this scene Janis had full right to be piss off because she invited Cady to her art show ( which is a normal friend thing to do.) And Cady outright lied to her say she had family thing and couldn't go when she didn't. She blow them and threw a party because she " had to pretend to be plastic" when she didn't.
I love how Janis calls Cady out on her toxic behaviour here, but who is going to call Janis out on her toxic behaviour too?
*EDIT:* Janis calling herself mean isn’t anything, because she still makes no effort to change despite knowing that she’s a mean girl. Also Cady was shamed and humiliated for becoming a Plastic, so why shouldn’t the others girls (including Janis) be too?

She manipulated Candeh's emotions with the Aaron samuels thing and gave her stockholm syndrome so that Cahndy would still want Regina's approval.

That’s the whole point, to show no one is above being the “mean” one.
She wasn’t toxic but she definitely was bitter. From the looks of it, seemed like Regina was nasty to every person she came encountered with, even her own 2 best friends. Without the 8th grade drama that occurred, Janis would’ve have been in Gretchen’s position: A glamorous but miserable insecure girl cause of how badly Regina was treating and using her.
i literally felt bad for Cady through the whole movie, everyone was just using her and she really never had a true friend..

Same can be said about Janis really. Regina has proven herself to be nasty to literally everyone she meets…..even to her own mother and 2 best friends. Janis wasn’t the only one. And losing Regina as a friend should’ve been a blessing in disguise. Janis clearly developed PTSD from being bullied by Regina, which is DO emphasize and feel bad for. But I agree, taking her anger and frustration out on Cady was wrong.
That entire speech from Janis should have been for Regina. It fits her well. After Regina’s reputation started going down and she was gaining weight, it became obvious that she’s not at well-liked as she thought she was. Even her own two friends were avoiding her to hang out with Cady instead.

As much as I love the acting in this scene, I hate how Janis is never called out on her own flaws, and instead is allowed to pin all the blame on Cady and still be portrayed as in the right. This movie leaned so hard into the "not like other girls complex" associating femininity with being shallow, dumb, vindictive, mean, catty, and relying on the male gaze for approval. But when Janis also shows shallowness and meanness and cattiness, she is rewarded and seen as cool.
Oh yeah, the 2000s and 2010s really had a ton of “not like other girls” moments, and it really impacted us as kids. It’s only when we grew older that we realised what’s wrong with that statement. Unfortunately, there are still people in their 30s and even 40s who still act like that.

Cady got hated by the whole school (except Karen and Gretchen) and had to do a public speech and take responsabilty for the Burn book. As for Janis, NOTHING bad happened to her. She got away with no reputation or physical harm, ended with friends and a boyfriend... The movie made her seem like a good person who deserved no karma.

I don’t actually think Janis intended to manipulate Cady in a bad way or set out to ruin her. I think Janis was just so deeply hurt by what Regina did to her in eighth grade that she really just wanted to make Regina feel the same pain back. But unfortunately, this is not a good way to handle your resentment or anger you have towards another person.
Janis did not actually start the whole “Regina Revenge” experiment with Cady until Cady was asked out of the blue to sit with The Plastics at lunch. At first, she and Damian genuinely wanted to be Cady’s friends and talked to her when nobody else would. The experiment really just started out as Cady hanging out with The Plastics and laughing with Janis about it later. But when Regina purposely stole Aaron Samuels away from Katie at the Halloween party, that’s when the “sabotage” really began.
Janis just did not realize how caught up Cady would get with hanging out with the group when she started becoming a “plastic” herself. It was not okay for Cady to start becoming this way, but honestly it was bound to happen. Cady was just so naive and sheltered having been homeschooled her whole life in Africa. When she moved to the states and attended a public high school, she really just was like a lost puppy in a big crowd. She didn’t know which direction to turn or how to make her own decisions very well. She just didn’t know what she was doing.

It's so funny when I watched this movie when I was young I thought Regina was the bitch but when you get a little older and watch it you realize Janice is arguably just as bad as Regina just using Cady.
JakesNotDrinking she's manipulative, better, vindictive, and wants nothing more than attention and revenge. She preys on cady's naiveté to ruin regina's life over somethings a regular person would be over by her stage in life. The only true mean girl in this film is Janis Ian.

I think the idea of the film is that they're all mean in their own way, regardless of whether they are Miss Cool, Miss Naive or Miss Loser. Regina is outright mean, Janice uses Cady to get revenge on Regina and ruin her life and thought it was justifiable and Cady is mean for ditching her friends for a better set and treating a guy like property. Karen and Gretchen are actually the nicer girls (not completely nice but nicer). Yes they're dumb and self-centred but they're but they are not vindictive. They just follow mean girls because mean girls wield power and they need a leader.

i think the people who are commenting back to those saying "janis is the one who started all of it so why is she attacking cady" are right - the whole thing originally started as a small joke between janis and cady, to just prat about and mess with regina a LITTLE. i don't think at all that the whole thing is about janis wanting revenge on regina, she never states in the beginning "this girl ruined my life, will you help me ruin hers?" she DOES state something similar, but she never uses it as the reason for messing with her in the first place, it was just for laughs. janis never meant for it to go as far as it did - resulting in aaron breaking up with regina, their teacher being accused of drug dealing and basically just a load of shit happening. as janis says, she and regina know and ADMIT that they're mean - cady always plays the innocent girl, and she COULD have wanted it all to stop, she KNEW it was getting out of control but all the rep went to her head. she LIKED being the queen, and she wasn't about to lose it all even if people got hurt in the process. cady could have done something to stop it, she knew it was going too far, but chose not to. that's why janis is so pissed at her.

JANIS coulden´t care less about mean Barbie Regina getting hurt or lonely since Barbie Regina had made basically every girl in school BULLY Janis for "being a lesbian"! An eye for an eye even if she did try to ruin her life back. And she didn't even try to to that, so I see no reason for Janice to do any more than admit the things she did wrong.

The moment where Caty became just as plastic as Regina in my eyes is when she lies to her parents to not go out of town with them “because of Janice’s art show”. She didn’t simply forget that the art show was the same night as the party she threw. She purposefully didn’t invite her and didn’t show up to the art show because she was secretly loving being the new “it girl” in Regina’s place. It would be bad enough if she simply forgot about Janice’s art show, but the fact that she used it as leverage to stay home from a trip and then didn’t even consider going and had a party instead just put her on par with Regina in my eyes.
This movie not even being nominated for Best Screenplay is still laughable. This story is still completely relatable 15 years later.
It is relatable bec it shows how life is. It is disguised as a teen flick but one can truly learn a lot from this movie
Well if it soothes you the WGA chose it for one of the best Comedy screenplays in a list of a 100.
